Overview
Olentium is a Maltese perfume house founded and run by the Anglo-Maltese perfumer Liz Grech. It makes gender-neutral fragrances with a high share of natural materials, all designed and blended in a small atelier-lab in a village house on the Maltese Islands. The company describes itself as "a niche brand of luxury artisanal fragrances based on islands at the centre of the Mediterranean" [2].
Its eau de parfum Bal Baroque was named a finalist in the Artisan category of the 10th Art and Olfaction Awards in 2024 [8]. Olentium sells mainly direct through its own website, ships internationally, and also runs perfume-making workshops at its Maltese base. It remains active, with a new fragrance released in October 2026.
Origin & founders
Liz Grech came to perfumery from another field. According to the company, she started out in magazine journalism and digital communications before turning to fragrance [2]. Her training is set out in her entry on the Malta Crafts Register, the official craftsperson register kept by the Malta Crafts Council: she holds a diploma in organic cosmetic formulation from the school Formula Botanica, accredited by the UK Open & Distance Learning Council, and later trained informally in natural perfumery with an industry perfume evaluator, attending several courses in the UK [9].
The register lists her as a self-employed craftsperson who works full-time on making crafts and earns her main income from them. Olentium's own About page points readers to that entry. In the award listings of the Art and Olfaction Awards she appears under her full name, Elizabeth Grech.
The company does not publicly state a founding year.
Ownership
Olentium is a founder-run business with no documented parent company or outside investor. Its 2024 award nomination came in a category that is, by the organisers' rules, open only to brands at least 35 percent owned by their primary perfumer, who must also have created the submitted formula in-house [8]. That fits the picture of a one-perfumer house in which Grech is both owner and nose.
Philosophy & positioning
Olentium sums up its approach in a short tagline: "Contemporary fragrance classics, gender neutral, high % naturals." The company says its style follows mid-century "Riviera" living in its classic scent structures, and that it draws on Mediterranean flora, literature, places and culture. For Olentium, the word niche is less a market label than "an interpretation of our ethos and artisanal approach".
Seasons run through much of how the house presents itself. Recent collections are framed as "quiet luxury fragrances" meant for the shifts between summer and autumn, inspired by the archipelago as the summer heat fades. A second idea, which the company calls "The Spirited Raw", concerns batch variation. Because natural materials change from harvest to harvest, Olentium does not try to make every batch smell identical. It treats each one as, in its words, "essentially a limited edition".
The company's ethos page states its guiding principle plainly: "Enjoying luxury should not be at the expense of the natural world nor of ethical human endeavour." [3] It also admits that the brand is not perfect and describes its approach as an ongoing journey rather than a finished achievement.
Products & innovation
The range centres on eaux de parfum, alongside extraits, a cologne intense, travel sizes and sample sets. Olentium's best-selling list includes:
- Bal Baroque, an eau de parfum the company describes as "opulent and sensual" and links to Caravaggio's time in Valletta; it is the house's award-finalist scent. - Sicilian Suede, an extrait presented in a journal post of March 2025 under the title "the Leopard's Legacy Sketched in Scent". - Fiorissima, a white floral, described by one customer quoted on the brand's homepage as "luscious and heady". - Olentium Le Parfum, the house's namesake perfume. - Fig Nocturne, a fig-based fragrance released in October 2026.
The homepage also features Rose Saudade, which combines Rose de Mai and Damask rose with sandalwood and violet leaf, and lists a cologne intense called Boschetto.
On formulation, Olentium works with both natural and synthetic perfumery materials, with botanicals as its first choice. The Malta Crafts Register entry describes Grech's perfumes as largely mixed-media, drawing first on plants native to the Mediterranean, adding precious oils from further afield, and using a select palette of synthetics that favours nature-identical and biotech ingredients [9]. The company puts the natural share at about 40 percent on average across the range [5]; its homepage phrases the same figure as "up to 40%" in botanical extracts.
The eaux de parfum contain between 18 and 20 percent perfume oil. Olentium says they are made in denatured grain ethanol, which its FAQ identifies as Italian grain alcohol, and that it uses organic hydrosols to round out their scent profiles [4]. The company states that all its perfumes comply with the standards of IFRA, the fragrance industry's safety body, and are safety-tested under EU cosmetics law. It says it tries to avoid materials derived from mineral oil, and it lists each perfume's fragrance allergens on the product pages.
According to Olentium, its perfumes contain no common animal-derived ingredients such as beeswax, honey, civet, hyraceum, castoreum or ambergris. The company adds that some musk materials may be animal-derived and that it can advise on specific batches [5]. It does not make a vegan or cruelty-free claim, and no third-party certifications are documented.
Beyond perfume, Olentium sells silk scarves under the name Silkwear and runs hands-on perfume-making workshops at its base, a traditional Maltese village house. Led by Grech, the half-day sessions start with a short history of perfume and the basics of notes and accords. Participants then blend their own fragrance to take home. The house also offers small "scent bar" sessions for weddings, birthdays and corporate events.
Sustainability
Packaging is where the company's environmental claims are most concrete. Olentium says it does not wrap its perfume boxes in cellophane, favours recyclable materials and avoids unnecessary presentation packaging, while still protecting glass bottles in transit. Its packaging partners use card that is 70 percent recycled and/or FSC-approved, according to the company [3].
The company also says it uses cold-process formulation where possible, works to cut waste and chooses suppliers with their own commitments. It notes that natural ingredients are not automatically more sustainable than synthetic ones. By its own account, it does not yet hold any verifiable sustainability certification.
Recognition
Bal Baroque was named a finalist in the Artisan category of the 10th Art and Olfaction Awards, run by the Institute for Art and Olfaction. The finalists were announced on 19 April 2024 at an event in Los Angeles, and the winners were revealed at a ceremony in Lisbon on 7 June 2024 [8]. The awards recognise independent perfumery, and the finalist list credits the perfume to "Elizabeth Grech, Malta". Bal Baroque reached the final round but did not win the category. Olentium cites the placement across its website, and its workshop pages describe Grech herself as a finalist.
Current status
Olentium is active. Its journal shows regular posts through 2026, and in April 2026 the company announced that its perfumes were available in Cologne, Germany, exclusively at the perfumery Duftkunsthandlung. Its most recent launch, Fig Nocturne, was introduced on 12 October 2026 as a scent built around a Mediterranean fig tree at dusk [6]. The house continues to sell mainly direct to customers through its own website, shipping to most countries.
