Summary

Overview

Ongredients (Korean: 온그리디언츠) is a South Korean clean-beauty skincare brand operated by Powerplayer Co., Ltd. The Ongredients brand was launched in 2021 [6], two years after Powerplayer was founded in May 2019 [7] by Kim Yu-jae, a cosmetics-industry veteran of roughly a decade. The name fuses "On" — glossed by the company as real, original or one — with "Ingredients," signalling a focus on ingredient efficacy and pared-back, transparency-led formulation for sensitive, barrier-compromised skin.

The brand belongs to the mid-2020s wave of Korean skincare that paired clean-beauty values with fast global distribution. After its Skin Barrier Calming Lotion became a viral success in Korea, Ongredients grew from a handful of export markets to roughly forty countries between 2024 and 2025, and the parent company opened a Series A funding round in early 2026. It remains active and in a rapid growth phase.

Origin & founders

Powerplayer was established in May 2019 by Kim Yu-jae, who had worked in the cosmetics sector for about ten years from 2010. According to the founder account published by flex.team, he concluded during the strong years of Korean beauty exports that many brands struggled to last because they chased short-term sales and distributor preferences rather than what consumers actually wanted; he set up the company with the stated aim of building longer-lasting brands. Kim recruited former colleagues to the venture, and the company describes the result as a "clean moisturizing research laboratory."

Sources differ on where the company began. The business-press profile by viva100 records a 2019 founding in Daegu [7], and the brand's communication-sales registration is filed in Daegu's Dong-gu district. The current brand site, however, lists the headquarters in Seoul's Guro-gu, in the Daeryung Posttower complex [1]. The two are consistent across time rather than contradictory: the company registered in Daegu and later moved its head office to Seoul.

The Ongredients brand itself launched in 2021, debuting with what trade press described as the industry's first label-free packaging in Korea and a cleansing-ball product as its early flagship.

History & milestones

The brand's commercial momentum built quickly. By the end of 2022 Powerplayer had completed an 800 million won seed round and secured shelf space in major Korean retailers including Olive Young and Shinsegae Department Store, while beginning to enter Japan and Southeast Asia and partnering with the YG Entertainment group TREASURE [10].

A turning point came around 2023 with the Skin Barrier Calming Lotion, developed in collaboration with a beauty YouTuber. The company says it noticed that lotions had fallen out of everyday routines yet were still used by makeup artists and estheticians for a dewy finish, and built the product around that gap. The lotion gained traction after being featured among curated "Cheongdam Shop" picks in Seoul's Gangnam beauty district, and went on to take first place at the 2024 Musinsa Beauty Awards, in Olive Young's skincare category, and on the platform Zigzag. In a 2025 feature, flex.team framed the brand's rise as the story of "exporting one lotion to 40 countries."

Japanese distribution scaled from a few hundred offline stores in 2023 toward more than a thousand locations, and the brand later entered Nordstrom department stores in the United States. Reported export reach grew alongside this, from 17 countries in early 2024 [7] to roughly 40 by 2025 — a trajectory rather than a contradiction. In January 2026 Powerplayer opened a Series A round targeting up to 10 billion won, with Deloitte Anjin as lead underwriter [8].

Ownership

Ongredients is wholly operated by Powerplayer Co., Ltd. (주식회사파워플레이어), an unlisted South Korean company led by founder and chief executive Kim Yu-jae. Powerplayer also runs the OngreC subscription platform and a brand called Tennizle, and as of April 2026 reported 28 employees [14]. It has raised capital across several stages, including the 2022 seed round, an investment from CNT Tech in January 2024 [11], and the 2026 Series A.

Philosophy & positioning

Ongredients positions itself in the clean-beauty segment, built on the idea that authentic ingredients make for a better life; its tagline is "True Ongredients, A Better Life." The company describes a "one is enough" approach favouring minimalist, focused formulas over crowded ingredient lists, and says it strictly excludes what it calls negative ingredients while including only verified ones — editorial coverage puts the number of excluded ingredients at twenty. On its US site the brand frames the same idea as prioritising fundamental skin problems over complicated formulations.

The range targets consumers in their twenties and thirties — Korea's so-called MZ generation — and skews toward sensitive and barrier-focused skin. Its products are sold through Olive Young, Shinsegae, Musinsa and duty-free channels in Korea, and internationally via the brand's own e-commerce sites and retailers such as Nordstrom, Soko Glam, Skin Cupid and YesStyle.

Products & innovation

The catalogue centres on skin-barrier care, with lines spanning cleansers and toners, serums and creams, sunscreen, masks and patches, plus a makeup category on the US site. Several hero ingredients recur across the range: centella asiatica (cica), butterfly pea flower, green tea and heartleaf (houttuynia cordata), chosen for soothing and antioxidant properties.

The Skin Barrier Calming Lotion is the brand's signature product and its commercial anchor, formulated with a 9-peptide complex. Other notable items include the Skin Barrier Calming Softener, a centella-based toner; the Jeju Cica Cleansing Ball, the brand's first-year flagship; a butter-textured "Gguduk Cream" introduced as a 2023 flagship; a Slow Ageing Cream; and the Heartleaf AC Balancing Serum. More recently the company released the Skin Barrier Glow Cover Cushion, a makeup product marketed around a long-wear "inner glow" finish, as a global launch.

Powerplayer has also pursued a technology angle unusual for a skincare brand. Its OngreC platform — also rendered Ongrisee — is an IoT-based subscription service that embeds sensors in product packaging to track how much remains and to time replenishment to actual usage rather than a fixed schedule [7]. An early version, developed through a Daegu University startup-support program, won a Korea Electronics Show Innovation Award, and the company took the concept to CES 2024 with backing from the Daegu Creative Economy Innovation Center. Powerplayer additionally reports two government-funded research projects covering wrinkle improvement and functional bio-materials. The company also highlights dermatological and clinical testing of its formulas; it states, for instance, that in trials every participant reported that the Skin Barrier Calming Softener relieved irritation, improved roughness, enhanced glow and temporarily tightened the appearance of pores.

Sustainability & certifications

Sustainability is central to how Ongredients presents itself. The company says it introduced the industry's first label-free packaging in 2021 and develops easy-peel labels and recyclable or upcycled products using regenerated paper and biodegradable materials [11], framing this within what it calls a sustainable green-lifestyle practice and ESG-led management.

The brand holds PETA Cruelty-Free certification; PETA's listing states that neither its ingredients nor finished products are tested on animals, and that its suppliers and third parties follow the same standard [13]. Korean business press also reports PETA Vegan and COSMOS ORGANIC certifications [7].

Recognition

In 2024 the Skin Barrier Calming Lotion took first place at the Musinsa Beauty Awards, in Olive Young's skincare category, and on Zigzag [9]. The OngreC subscription platform separately won a Korea Electronics Show Innovation Award. The brand and its founder have been profiled across major Korean business and trade outlets including Money Today, viva100, Cosin Korea and The Bell; no Korean or English Wikipedia entry exists for the brand or its parent.

Current status

Ongredients is active and growing. THE VC's company database records revenue rising from 4.08 billion won in 2023 to 26.08 billion won in 2025 [14]. Figures for the intervening year are reported inconsistently: a 2026 article in The Bell cited a 2024 revenue near 200 billion won [8], which sits well outside THE VC's documented trajectory and appears to be a transcription or unit error of roughly one order of magnitude. The Series A round opened in January 2026 valued the company at an estimated 500 billion won according to The Bell [8]. The brand maintains active e-commerce in Korea and the United States along with ongoing social-media channels, and continues to expand across Asia, North America and Europe.
