Original Sprout

Original Sprout is an American hair and body care brand founded in 2003 in Santa Barbara, California, by master hairstylist Inga Tritt [1]. It makes vegan, non-toxic personal care products aimed at whole families, from infants to adults, and is best known for its gentle baby wash and detangling formulas. Since around 2017–2018 the brand has operated as a wholly owned subsidiary of the corporate group now called The Marygold Companies, Inc. (NYSE American: MGLD) [9], and it remains commercially active, with new product lines launched through 2024 and 2025.

The company describes itself as a family-centred brand built on safety and trust, and it manufactures its products in California. It is distributed internationally through natural-grocery chains, department stores and other retailers.

Original Sprout began with a new mother's frustration. Inga Tritt, a Santa Barbara hairstylist who had built and sold salons and spas earlier in her career, could not find hair and bath products she felt were clean and gentle enough for her infant daughter's sensitive skin. She set out to formulate her own. According to the brand, the products grew out of requests from parents seeking detangling and styling help for children, and what started as a narrow focus expanded into a full family line [1].

The name itself is personal: according to an authorised distributor's account of the brand's story, "Sprout" was inspired by the birth of Tritt's daughter Maya in 2002 [7]. Tritt is credited as the founder across the brand's own materials and in a founder interview published by Authority Magazine [6].

Original Sprout is a wholly owned subsidiary of The Marygold Companies, Inc., which trades on NYSE American under the ticker MGLD [9]. The path to that ownership runs through a corporate rename. A 2020 announcement described Original Sprout as a subsidiary of Concierge Technologies, Inc. (OTCQB: CNCG), which had acquired the brand roughly two years earlier [8]; Concierge Technologies was subsequently renamed The Marygold Companies. The two names therefore refer to the same corporate parent at different points in time rather than to separate owners. The parent group reports offices and manufacturing operations in the United States, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and Canada [9].

The brand's stated tagline is "Safe, effective and non toxic," and it positions itself around personal care that whole families can use. Its mission, as founder Inga Tritt framed it in an interview, is "to help others feel good about the way they look and feel, so they live their best lives." The company says its formulas blend plant-based extracts from fruits, vegetables and flowers, and that they are made without ingredients it treats as irritants, including parabens and phthalates. Original Sprout also states a commitment to environmentally responsible manufacturing and packaging.

Original Sprout's range covers shampoos and conditioners, baby and kids' products, styling, and body care, alongside travel and gift sets. Among the products the brand highlights as heroes are its Hair & Body Babywash, Deep Conditioner and Classic Shampoo. Its ingredients page lists a set of plant-derived oils and extracts, including argan, coconut, jojoba and kukui seed oils, shea, aloe vera and pomegranate, as well as non-nano zinc oxide.

The company markets its formulas as vegan, cruelty-free and clinically tested, and says they are produced and packaged in California. It states that its products avoid nanoparticles, harsh sulfates, parabens and phthalates. For preservation, the brand cites its use of MicroSilver BG, which it describes as a non-skin-penetrating natural preservative [6]. On testing, Original Sprout reports scoring "0 out of 4" on clinical patch tests — a result it presents as meaning no reaction on participants' skin — and says its products have produced no allergic reactions in its independent lab tests [5]. The company also frames this volunteer patch testing as an alternative to animal testing.

More recent product activity has centred on a Tahitian Collection, a tropical-themed hair and body range that the brand expanded in 2024. In 2020 it had introduced a separate "Worry Free" hair care line, launched through an exclusive relationship with an undisclosed nationwide retailer [8].

Original Sprout's founder was profiled by Authority Magazine in an interview titled "Five Things You Need To Know To Succeed In The Modern Beauty Industry." The brand's Tahitian Collection drew trade coverage, including a January 2025 write-up by SheScribes. According to that founder interview, the brand's products are carried by retailers including Sprouts Farmers Market, Whole Foods, Harrods and Disneyland, among others internationally [6].

Original Sprout remains active as a subsidiary of The Marygold Companies rather than an independent company. Its most recent publicly recorded activity dates to early 2025, when it exhibited a Tahitian Collection of more than 25 SKUs at the Natural Products Expo West trade show in Anaheim, California, held in March that year [9]. The brand continues to be distributed worldwide and to operate from facilities in San Clemente, California — a location distinct from the Santa Barbara of its 2003 founding.
