Overview
Oscar de la Renta is an American luxury fashion house founded in 1965 and headquartered in New York City [4]. It was established by the Dominican-born designer Oscar de la Renta (1932–2014), who trained under Cristóbal Balenciaga in Spain and worked at Lanvin in Paris and for Elizabeth Arden in New York before opening his own house. Within the beauty market the house is known for its fragrances, beginning with Oscar in 1977; the perfume line is produced under a worldwide exclusive licence held by Inter Parfums since 2013 [6].
The house remains active. It continues to release seasonal ready-to-wear under creative directors Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia, and its fragrance catalogue is sold internationally, with the Inter Parfums licence running through 2031 and an option to 2036.
Origin and founders
Oscar de la Renta was born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, and left at eighteen to study painting in Madrid before apprenticing with Balenciaga and working at the House of Lanvin in Paris. He moved to New York to design for Elizabeth Arden's couture collection, then founded his own house in 1965 after taking over the Jane Derby label following that founder's death [4]. He became internationally known in the 1960s as one of the designers who dressed Jacqueline Kennedy, and over a career of more than fifty years he dressed a succession of U.S. first ladies, among them Betty Ford, Nancy Reagan, Hillary Clinton and Laura Bush [9].
Ownership
The fashion house itself has remained independent. In 2013, Inter Parfums acquired certain assets of the Oscar de la Renta fragrance division and entered a worldwide exclusive licence to create, produce and distribute perfumes and cosmetics under the brand [6]. The arrangement covers the fragrance line only; Inter Parfums does not own the fashion company. In 2019 the two parties extended the licence through 31 December 2031, with an option to 31 December 2036 [6]. Inter Parfums has described Oscar de la Renta as one of its most important brands within its U.S. operations. The business is led by chief executive Alex Bolen, under whom, according to Wikipedia, the house expanded from five to seventy-five wholesale locations.
Philosophy and positioning
The company positions itself in the register of European couture houses and describes its work as distinguished by "lavish textiles, vibrant color and an unwavering commitment to craftsmanship" [2]. Its stated mission is to make women "look and feel extraordinary," and the founder's own philosophy was summed up in the line "Fashion is only fashion once a woman puts it on." The fragrances have long been tied to a classic American glamour aesthetic; the original Oscar was linked to the house's aim of dressing an aspirational, society-set audience [8].
Products and fragrances
The house offers ready-to-wear, handbags, jewellery, bridal and fragrance collections, of which the fragrances form its beauty-market presence. Its first perfume, Oscar, launched in 1977 and was created by the perfumer Jean-Louis Sieuzac; it is described as a floral-chypre scent [8]. Under the Inter Parfums licence the range has grown with several newer fragrance families, including the Bella collection (with editions such as Bella Blanca, Bella Rosa and Bella Soleil) and the Alibi line. Oscar de la Renta Extraordinary, launched in 2015 and developed with International Flavors & Fragrances, was Inter Parfums' first fragrance produced for the brand [7].
Recognition
The original Oscar won the 1978 Women's Fragrance of the Year FiFi Award [10]. Its founder received wide recognition in fashion, including the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) Lifetime Achievement Award in 1990 [4] and France's Légion d'Honneur. When Oscar de la Renta died in 2014, obituaries described him as a designer who had spent more than fifty years dressing royalty, entertainers and U.S. first ladies.
A 2015 review by the trade publication WWD was more measured: its panel rated Oscar de la Renta Extraordinary 4.25 out of 10, calling it pleasant but noting common notes and structures typical of mass-market fragrance [7].
Current status
Oscar de la Renta is active. The brand site shows current seasonal ready-to-wear and a full women's fragrance catalogue, and the house continues under creative directors Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia following the founder's death in 2014. Its fragrance business operates under the Inter Parfums licence in effect through at least 2031 [6].
