Osma

Osma is a French men's grooming brand built around the alum stone, a block of natural potassium alum long used to calm the skin after shaving. It is the flagship shaving line of Laboratoires Osma, an independent manufacturer founded in 1957 and based in Craponne, near Lyon. The company handcrafts alum stones and shaving products and describes itself as the last French maker of alum stones still in operation [2].

From the start the business concentrated on shaving, and it has stayed close to that heritage since. Today Osma sits alongside several sister lines under the same laboratory, and its alum block is stocked by grooming retailers across the United States, the United Kingdom and Europe.

Laboratoires Osma was founded in 1957 [2]. The names of its founders are not part of the public record. Its home is Craponne, in the Lyon area, where the company says its alum stones are cut and polished by hand in its own workshop [7]. It presents itself as a pioneer of natural cosmetics manufacturing, with know-how built up over more than fifty years [2].

According to the company, its earliest decades through the early 1980s were devoted to shaving products; from the mid-1980s it widened its range into hemostatic pencils and deodorants [3]. The alum block earned it a following among professionals, and the company recounts becoming a partner to barbers, who came to know it as a "barber's friend" [3].

The centrepiece is the Bloc Osma alum block, sold most familiarly as a 75-gram stone. Around it, the Osma Rasage and Osma Tradition ranges cover shaving soap, a haemostatic (styptic) pencil for small shaving nicks, pre-shave oils, after-shave balm and beard care. The company says the Osma Tradition line is made with at least 95 percent natural ingredients [1].

Osma's hero material is natural alum, a mineral salt crystal it says it uses in fully natural form. Laboratoires Osma states that it holds the Cosmos Nat certification for its alum stones, and it claims to be the first company in the world to have both its raw material and its finished alum stones certified under that standard [7].

Osma frames wet shaving less as a daily chore than as a form of male self-care, passed in the company's words "from fathers to sons" [1]. The brand rests its identity on craft tradition, careful selection of raw materials and natural ingredients, and names simplicity, authenticity and quality as its guiding values [6]. Its tagline sums up the positioning: "Old classic shaving for modern male."

The company ties its manufacturing choices to environmental ones. It says it keeps alum-stone production in France to reduce the carbon and environmental cost of importing, favours local suppliers for packaging and materials, and treats its waste to limit its impact [7].

Osma is the men's-grooming face of Laboratoires Osma, which runs several related lines from the same base. These include Aluna Cosmetics, a natural and organic skincare range, and Alunotherapy, a daily-hygiene line sold through pharmacies and parapharmacies, alongside the Osma Tradition and Osma Rasage shaving ranges [4]. No larger parent group is publicly recorded; the laboratory appears to operate independently.

Osma is active. Its alum stones and shaving products are manufactured in France and distributed through grooming retailers internationally as of 2026, and the corporate site remains current. One specialist retailer describes the company as the last remaining alum-stone and hemostatic-pencil manufacturer in France [8]. The consumer brand's own blog has not published since April 2020, but the product line and manufacturing operation remain in service.
