Overview
Osmia is a Finnish design and manufacturing company based in Helsinki that makes nature-inspired scents, soaps and related products. Its core specialities are sauna aromas, room scents and perfumes built around Nordic plants, alongside bar and liquid soaps, body scrubs and shampoo. The company was founded by chemist Eero Vänttinen and grew from home-made fragrance oils into a workshop it calls "the little aroma and soap factory."
The business remains active and independent. It manufactures in-house in Helsinki, sells directly and through export, and in 2025 displayed a Kauppalehti "Kestomenestyjät" (sustained-success) certificate on its homepage [1].

Origin & founders
Osmia traces back to Eero Vänttinen, a chemist born in a small village in western Finland in the late 1950s. According to a feature by the industry association Sauna from Finland, he developed an early interest in plants as a child and later studied chemistry at the University of Turku, where he began making fragrance oils at home. He left an academic career at the university to work as a perfumer and business owner [8].
His first products were sauna aromas — among the first designed to be mixed with water — which he packed onto his bicycle and sold at local markets and nearby gift shops [8]. Word of mouth built demand, and the venture expanded into artisan soaps and bath products before being formalised as a company.
The date of that formalisation is recorded differently across sources. The Finnish-language company history gives an explicit year, stating that the first premises were rented from the old Littoinen textile factory in 1989 [6]. English-language material, including the Sauna from Finland feature, instead describes the company as "established 30 years ago," which would imply a founding around the mid-1990s [8]; this is a relative phrasing rather than a dated record, and is consistent with a 1989 origin.
History & milestones
After the Littoinen beginning, from which sales expanded beyond the Turku region [6], the company later moved production to an old brick barn in Kellokoski, in Tuusula. In 2017 it relocated to the Herttoniemi district of Helsinki, where manufacturing now takes place [6].
Vänttinen continues to develop fragrances and is described as the "nose" of the company. Day-to-day leadership is held by Pasi Väistö as chief executive and Anne Mäkijärvi in sales and marketing. The company's range has grown to roughly 150 products built on more than 40 of its own scents, some of them unchanged for over two decades.
Philosophy & positioning
Osmia describes its founding premise as offering an alternative to international mass production. It positions itself around "the true essence of Finnish nature," a phrase it uses as its tagline, and emphasises creativity, respect for nature, simplicity in design and hand-made production. The company says its aim is to create the most authentic sensory experience while combining high quality, craftsmanship and environmentally friendly ingredients.
The founder's questions about market gaps shaped the catalogue: the company has said it set out to make soap that smelled of white clover, birch products that smelled authentically of birch, and a fuller Finnish sauna range than was then available.
Products & innovation
The catalogue centres on scent. It spans sauna aromas, room fragrances, perfumes, scented candles, bar and liquid soaps, body scrubs and shampoo, all produced in-house in Helsinki. Among the fragrances, Peat, Birch leaf and Lily of the Valley are described as remaining among the company's best sellers [8], and its popular scent themes include birch, pine forest, clover, lilac and honeysuckle.
Ingredients draw on Finnish raw materials, including domestic rye and by-products of Finnish forestry [7]. Beyond its own labels, the company also develops fragrances for other Finnish brands, among them Marimekko, Luhta and Finlayson [7].
Sustainability
The company states that responsibility has been part of its approach from the start. It controls the whole production chain internally, and says that manufacturing to order in Helsinki keeps waste to a minimum, with functional but quality-rejected products donated to charity rather than discarded. On packaging, an editorial feature reports that Osmia uses 100% recycled glass or plastic and that one-litre refill bags cut plastic use by about 70% [7]. The founder's doctorate in chemistry is cited by the company as informing its choice of materials on grounds of function, safety and environmental impact.
Recognition
Osmia has been the subject of editorial features in the Nordic lifestyle title Scan Magazine and in a member profile by Sauna from Finland. In 2025 it was recognised with a Kauppalehti "Kestomenestyjät" certificate, a business award for sustained financial performance [1].
Current status
Osmia is an active, independently operating company. It manufactures in Herttoniemi, Helsinki, runs a live e-commerce site and continues fragrance development under its founder. Finland is its primary market, with reported export growth in Japan, Korea and Australia, particularly among sauna and spa businesses [7]. On Glowjakt it is listed in the Finnish market.
