Overview
Pai Skincare is a British skincare company founded in London in 2007 by Sarah Brown [6]. It specialises in certified-organic products formulated for sensitive and reactive skin, and it develops and manufactures everything in-house at its West London facility. The company remains independent and founder-led, and it sells directly to customers through regional storefronts for the United Kingdom, United States, Canada and Ireland.
Brown started the business as a response to her own skin. In her twenties she developed chronic urticaria, a persistent hives condition, and struggled to find products she felt she could trust [6]. Pai grew out of that search, built on her conviction that natural ingredients did not have to mean weaker results.
Origin & founders
Before starting Pai, Sarah Brown worked in communications, including a role as international PR manager for the California winemaker E&J Gallo and earlier work handling communications for Nike and Barclaycard [6]. After her skin condition left her unable to find suitable products, she moved into skincare formulation.
She launched Pai in 2007 from her West London garage with 15,000 pounds of personal savings [6]. Brown has described the early operation as "a true start-up in every sense of the word with limited funds, operating out of a garage" [6]. According to the company, the guiding idea from the outset was that sensitive skin should not force a compromise between gentleness and efficacy; as Brown puts it, "I knew natural ingredients were the only way forward for my sensitive skin. But I wasn't willing to compromise – and neither should you."
Philosophy & positioning
Pai frames sensitive skin as a spectrum rather than a single skin type, summarising it as "sensitive skin is not a type, it's a scale." The company references conditions including eczema, rosacea, urticaria, psoriasis and dermatitis when describing who its products are intended for. Its stated mission is "to do the right thing for you and your skin," by making products it describes as natural, ethical and sustainable. The brand's tagline is "Made For Sensitive Skin. Certified Clean. Goodness Built In."
A defining feature of the company's positioning is that it does not outsource production. Pai formulates and manufactures all of its products at its London headquarters, an approach Brown ties to quality control, faster iteration and creative ownership. She has called manufacturing "a bit of a lost art in our industry," adding that having concept, production and shipping "all under one roof" is central to how the brand works.
Products & innovation
Pai's range covers face oils, cleansers, moisturisers and night creams, serums, boosters, SPF, eye care and hand and body care. Recurring ingredients across the line include rosehip, hyaluronic acid, chamomile, vitamin C, squalene and peptides. The company says all of its products are clinically tested for sensitive skin.
Its best-known product is the Rosehip BioRegenerate Oil, which the company reports has sold more than one million bottles; one account describes it selling a bottle roughly every three minutes [7]. The Light Work Rosehip Cleansing Oil is also cited as a bestseller [6]. Product development runs through an in-house unit the brand calls Pai Labs, described as an innovation hub where its chemists can respond to trends and demand quickly. Several product lines carry trademarked names, including Bioregenerate, Light Work and Bright Now.
Sustainability & certifications
Pai is a certified B Corp, and its formulas are certified organic under COSMOS by the Soil Association [2]. The brand is also certified vegan by The Vegan Society and cruelty-free through Leaping Bunny (Cruelty Free International) [2]. Manufacturing takes place in London under ISO 22716 good-manufacturing-practice standards, and the company states its products are patch-tested for sensitive and eczema-prone skin.
Recognition
Pai has drawn attention beyond its core market. France is reported as its largest market, ahead of the United States and the United Kingdom [7]. The brand has also been linked with actor Natalie Portman, who according to Yahoo Finance had bought from Pai since the filming of Black Swan; Brown learned of the connection when a Hollywood makeup-artist agency requested products for an unnamed client during awards season [7]. In 2015, Brown won "First Woman in Manufacturing" at the CBI First Women Awards [7].
Current status
Pai Skincare is active and remains independent. As of its most recent reported activity in 2023, the company had raised a 14 million pound Series C investment, had staff numbers approaching 60, and was targeting 24 percent growth for the year alongside a product launch called Bright Now [7]. Its products are sold across several markets through dedicated regional storefronts.
