Summary

Overview

Pantovigar is a German hair-loss range made by the Merz pharmaceutical group of Frankfurt am Main. It began as an oral capsule combining the amino acid L-cystine with B vitamins, and today consists of three products: Pantovigar vital micronutrient capsules, plus a shampoo and a scalp tonic that the company says were developed for women whose hair loss is not caused by illness. The range is sold mainly through pharmacies and is presented on haar-ausfall.com, an advice portal on hair problems run by Merz Therapeutics GmbH [1].

Two aspects of the brand stand out. The first is how its status has shifted over time. Trade and scientific sources from 2015 and 2020 describe the capsules as a pharmacy-only medicine approved for diffuse hair loss, while the current capsule, Pantovigar vital, is presented with the wording of a food supplement. The second is that the evidence behind the range is easy to trace, because the company footnotes each product claim with the study it rests on.

Origin & founders

The year Pantovigar was launched is not publicly documented, and no individual founder is associated with the brand itself. It was developed within Merz, a family-owned company whose roots go back to 1908, when the pharmacist and chemist Friedrich Merz set up his own pharmaceutical production in Frankfurt am Main [6]. That date belongs to the company, not to the hair-loss range.

The earliest clinical reference to the product dates from 2007. At a Merz press event on hair loss in 2009, the Berlin dermatologist Dr. Andreas Finner cited a small clinical study, published in 2007, in which six months of intake raised the share of hairs in the growth phase from 72.5 to 80.5 percent [10]. The German pharmacy journal that reported the event described the capsule of that period as combining the sulphur-containing amino acid cystine, B-group vitamins and medicinal yeast.

Ownership

Pantovigar belongs to the Merz Group, a family-owned company headquartered in Frankfurt am Main. The exact Merz entity behind it differs between sources. The brand's current website names Merz Therapeutics GmbH in its 2026 copyright line [1]. A 2020 peer-reviewed paper on the formulation, by contrast, lists Pantovigar under Merz Pharmaceuticals GmbH of Frankfurt [9], as did a 2015 trade-press report.

Both names refer to companies within the same group, and the difference most likely reflects internal reorganisation rather than a change of owner. Merz introduced a new corporate structure in late 2019, splitting into three independently run business divisions under Merz Pharma GmbH & Co. KGaA, the group's parent company [6]. Merz Therapeutics, the division now credited on the Pantovigar website, is also based in Frankfurt and otherwise focuses on treatments for neurological movement disorders. When the Pantovigar products moved to the Merz Therapeutics name is not stated publicly.

Pantovigar shares its website with Pantostin, a separate Merz product for hereditary hair loss. Pantostin is a scalp solution built on the active ingredient alfatradiol and is a distinct brand rather than part of the Pantovigar line.

Philosophy & positioning

Pantovigar is positioned as a pharmacy range for hair loss, with a particular focus on women. The shampoo and tonic carry the same description: the company says each was developed specifically for women with hair loss that is not caused by illness. The capsules, by contrast, are not aimed at a named group and are presented as a way to supply hair with nutrients on a daily basis.

Distribution is through pharmacies. According to Merz, Pantovigar vital is available exclusively in pharmacies, in packs of 30, 60 or 180 capsules [2]. The brand's website guides buyers either to a local pharmacy or to an online purchase option, and it pairs the products with editorial content on the causes, diagnosis and treatment of hair loss, including question-and-answer material from hair specialists.

### A change in regulatory framing

The way the capsules are described has changed over the years, and the two framings are not easy to reconcile from public sources alone. In 2015 a German pharmacy trade report described Pantovigar and Pantostin as "apothekenpflichtige Arzneimittel gegen Haarausfall", that is, pharmacy-only medicines against hair loss [7]. The 2020 study likewise referred to the marketed oral combination as approved for the treatment of diffuse hair loss, without naming the country [9].

The current product page for Pantovigar vital uses different language. It speaks of a recommended daily intake of two capsules, the standard wording for a food supplement, but never names a regulatory class [2]. The composition has changed too: alongside L-cystine and B vitamins, the current capsule adds iron, zinc, rice protein and a pea sprout extract. This points to a reformulated or successor product rather than a contradiction, but no public source states when the change happened or whether the earlier medicine is still sold.

Products & innovation

The range has three products.

Pantovigar vital is a capsule that the company describes as a combination of B vitamins, L-cystine and minerals. Merz names L-cystine as an amino acid and the main building block of hair keratin, the protein that hair is mostly made of. The B vitamins listed are pantothenic acid (B5), thiamine (B1), biotin (B7) and folic acid. Iron and zinc are included as trace elements, along with yeast, rice protein and a pea sprout extract. The capsules are labelled vegan, lactose-free and gluten-free.

Pantovigar Shampoo is a daily shampoo for all hair types. Its named active ingredients are AnaGain, a plant ingredient based on pea sprout extract, together with caffeine and two B vitamins, provitamin B5 and biotin. According to the brand, the caffeine is meant to improve blood flow to the scalp.

Pantovigar Tonic is a leave-in scalp treatment applied twice a day and not rinsed out. It combines AnaGain, caffeine and the same B vitamins with Follicusan, which the company describes as a complex of milk protein and amino acids. Merz presents the shampoo and tonic as a pair intended to be used together.

### Evidence behind the claims

Pantovigar's product claims are modest in scope, and the company attaches a source to each. The shampoo is said to strengthen healthy hair, make it more resilient and improve its quality. The footnote explains that these results come from the users' own subjective ratings in a test-institute study of the shampoo with 22 women, carried out in 2017 [3].

The tonic is said to reduce hair loss, support natural growth and improve hair density. Here the footnote refers to a 2013 study of the AnaGain ingredient with 20 people [4]. That study tested the ingredient, not the finished tonic. For Pantovigar vital, the product page cites only a general 2013 review article on nutrition and hair, and does not describe a clinical study of the current capsule itself.

The most detailed published research concerns the older oral formulation. A 2020 paper in the journal Clinical, Cosmetic and Investigational Dermatology tested a laboratory mixture designed to mirror the capsule, built from L-cystine, thiamine, calcium pantothenate and folic acid, on cultured skin cells [9]. The authors concluded that the compounds had a positive effect on cell growth and that L-cystine played a central role in protecting cells against oxidative stress. The study was carried out on cells in the laboratory, not on people. It was funded by Merz Pharmaceuticals, and three of its five authors were Merz employees.

The same paper styles the product name as "Panto[vi]gar", a bracketed form suggesting that the formulation is also sold under the shorter name Pantogar. No public source documents where that name is used.

Current status

Pantovigar is active. As of 2026, the Merz Therapeutics website carries current product pages for Pantovigar vital, the shampoo and the tonic, with a 2026 copyright notice [1]. The brand has no social media accounts linked from its website, and its press coverage has come mainly from the German pharmacy trade press rather than consumer beauty media. No third-party certifications are documented, and no Wikipedia article on the brand exists.
