Summary

Overview

Parfums de Marly is a French niche fragrance house based in Paris, founded in 2009 by Julien Sprecher [8]. The house takes its name and identity from the Château de Marly, the private royal retreat of King Louis XV reserved for his inner circle, and builds its fragrances around an idea of 18th-century French court life. Since June 2023 it has been majority-owned by the private equity firm Advent International, which acquired a controlling stake in its parent group [9].

Sprecher, described by the company as an aesthete with a long interest in the 18th century, set out to work against the conventions of niche perfumery. In its own words, the house was created "to express my own vision of modern Haute Parfumerie that disrupts the codes by taking inspiration freely from the spirit of 18th-century France." The brand is best known for a small group of widely worn scents — among them Delina, Layton and Valaya — and for reaching a mainstream audience through social media well beyond the usual niche-perfume circle.

Origin and founders

The house was established in Paris in 2009 [8]. Its founder, Julien Sprecher, serves as Creative Director and frames the project as a deliberate break from what was expected in the category: "I wanted to go against the grain, to break away from what was 'the done thing', and cultivate a creativity that defies codes and standards."

The name points directly to its central reference. The Château de Marly was a royal residence used by Louis XV as an escape from the strict etiquette of Versailles, and an invitation there marked entry to the king's closest circle. Parfums de Marly presents this history as the core of its identity — freedom from convention and a sense of belonging to an inner circle. The brand's emblem draws on the same period, referencing the Chevaux de Marly, sculptures by Guillaume Coustou, and incorporating the year 1743, when the château was restored.

History and milestones

A turning point came in 2017 with the launch of Delina, composed by perfumer Quentin Bisch, which went on to become the brand's most-searched fragrance. In 2021 the house began a reforestation partnership with Reforest'Action. The 2023 acquisition by Advent International followed a period of rapid commercial growth, and in 2024 the company began a three-year patronage agreement with the Louvre.

That Louvre partnership, running from 2024 to 2027, funds the restoration of the Cressent rooms in the museum's Department of Decorative Arts, including furniture by cabinetmaker André-Charles Boulle. Sprecher tied the sponsorship to the brand's founding theme, calling it "an honour for Parfums de Marly, and an immense personal joy, born of my enduring passion for the 18th century."

Ownership

In June 2023, Advent International acquired a majority stake in the Sprecher Berrier Group of Companies (SBGC), the parent of both Parfums de Marly and the related label Initio Parfums Privés [9]. Industry sources cited by trade press valued the deal at more than $700 million [12]. Julien Sprecher remained SBGC Chairman and Creative Director, kept a significant minority stake, and was described as the sole co-investor alongside Advent. The company presented the change as a continuity arrangement rather than a departure, with CEO Julien Sausset describing it as "a real partnership approach."

The brand's own website continues to list L.N.C. — the historical operating company, Société des Parfums L.N.C. — as the legal entity behind the house [1]. The beneficial ownership, however, sits with Advent International through its majority stake in SBGC as reported by trade publications.

Philosophy and positioning

Parfums de Marly positions itself as a luxury house built on 18th-century French court culture and the era sometimes called "the perfumed court," when, according to the brand, fragrance saturated royal life. It describes its values as the French art of living, freedom and elegance, and says it favours complex, long-lasting compositions over trend-driven releases. CEO Julien Sausset framed the appeal in editorial coverage as wanting "something that you will not find on your neighbour" [11].

The house maintains a loyalty programme it calls The Perfumed Court, a tiered membership extending the inner-circle theme, with a premium level reached through repeat purchases.

Products and innovation

Parfums de Marly offers more than 30 fragrances across lines for both women and men [8]. Its signature scents include Delina, Layton, Valaya and Althaïr, alongside later additions such as Herod, which combines tobacco, vanilla and osmanthus leather. The company builds its compositions around materials it describes as rare and precious — among them Damascena rose, Madagascar Bourbon vanilla and natural oud — and states that it takes 4,000 kilograms of freshly picked roses to produce a single litre of damascena rose essence.

On sustainability, the house reports several measures. It says each bottle is made in France from 50% recycled glass, in partnership with a master glassmaker certified as an Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant (Living Heritage Company), and that its fragrance alcohol is derived from unused parts of French beetroots processed locally. Since 2021 its Reforest'Action partnership has, by the company's account, planted more than 38,000 trees. No third-party environmental certifications, such as vegan, cruelty-free or COSMOS labels, are stated on the brand's sustainability page.

Recognition

Delina, launched in 2017, became the brand's breakout product and a widely discussed fragrance online, with roughly 60,000 TikTok searches and nearly 15,000 Google searches reported each month [10]. Who What Wear beauty editor Eleanor Vousden called it the most-complimented scent in her collection of about 60 fragrances, describing it as evoking "a 18th century powder room filled with rose bouquets and fluffy powder puffs." The same coverage noted that rapper Snoop Dogg said he carries a bottle, which it framed as a "fragrance plot twist of 2024" [10]. Layton, a men's fragrance, is frequently described in editorial coverage as an entry point into niche perfumery.

By its own commercial reporting, the brand recorded around $280 million in retail sales in 2022 across roughly 1,400 sales points worldwide, with strong growth in the United States [9].

Current status

Parfums de Marly remains an active, operating fragrance house, though it is no longer independently owned: since June 2023 it has been under the majority control of Advent International, which holds a controlling stake in parent company SBGC [9]. The brand has continued to launch new fragrances and pursue cultural sponsorships, including its ongoing Louvre patronage through 2027 [5].
