Pascal Morabito

Pascal Morabito is a French jewellery, fragrance and design house built around the work of its namesake, an architect-trained jeweller born in Nice in 1945 into a family of goldsmiths of Italian origin. The contemporary Pascal Morabito brand dates to 3 May 1968, when Morabito opened what he called a "centre for the study and creation of contemporary jewellery, or micro-architecture" within the family workshops [10]. The brand's own biography, however, dates the house to 1900 in Nice, a figure that refers to the earlier family business rather than the designer's own venture [2]. The name is best known in beauty for its perfumes, several of which extend the geometric vocabulary of Morabito's jewellery into fragrance.

The house today operates across two related entities: a jewellery, art and spa business run under Morabito's own name from a base at 16 Place Vendôme in Paris, and a separate fragrance company, Parfums Pascal Morabito, which markets the perfumes more widely. The Morabito family traces its goldsmith lineage to 1871, and the wider dynasty ran luxury boutiques well before the modern brand existed. According to interviews with Morabito, his grandfather opened the first Morabito boutique in Nice in 1896, working in mother-of-pearl and coral, and an uncle, Jean-Baptiste Morabito, established a Paris boutique in 1905 [11].

Pascal Morabito himself trained as an architect before turning to jewellery, and that background runs through the company's account of his work. The house describes him as someone who reconciles "commerce and creation, science and poetry," and presents each piece as resting on pure geometric form and transparency. In 1970 he created the "Free Diamond" (also rendered as diamant libre or diamant captif), a diamond suspended inside a gold-edged synthetic crystal cube; the design was later referenced in the Larousse encyclopedia and acquired by the Museum of Modern Art in New York [2].

Through the 1970s Morabito worked from Place Vendôme and moved between jewellery, watchmaking and sculpture. In 1972 the sculptor César produced compression works in Morabito's Nice workshops, and in 1976 Morabito designed the four-riveted Plot Watch [10]. His entry into perfumery came in 1980 with Or Noir, which the company presents as the first "parfum bijou," or jewel-perfume; Or Black followed for men in 1981 [9].

Larger-scale art projects followed. In 1990 Morabito built Fractal Pyramid 1, a monumental corten-steel sculpture in Normandy with 32-metre edges. Since 2006 he has lived in Bali with his family, where he has developed the Morabito Art Villa and Morabito Art Cliff and, connected to them, a spa and body-care line tied to the brand's Minimale fragrance line [4].

The parent company is not documented in the available sources. The jewellery, art and spa activities operate directly under Pascal Morabito from Place Vendôme, while the fragrance side is handled by the distinct Parfums Pascal Morabito company; both share the Pascal Morabito name and intellectual property. No acquisition history is recorded.

The brand positions itself at the meeting point of jewellery and fragrance, treating scent as an extension of its design language rather than a separate category. Its stated values centre on geometric purity, transparency and multi-disciplinary craft, and the company frames the perfumes as "works of art" built from architectural bottle forms as much as from their contents. Morabito's own summary of his method, quoted by the house, is "through making, I discover what I seek."

The fragrance company states that its products are made in France [9]. Retail pricing places the line in accessible-to-mid territory rather than at the top of the luxury market, while the jewellery ranges from modest pieces to items priced in the thousands of euros.

The fragrance catalogue is broad, spanning women's and men's lines such as Perles, Pierres Précieuses, ADN, Cube and Oud, alongside the long-running Or series. The two signature scents are Or Noir (1980) and Or Black (1981), both housed in geometric bottles fitted with engraved metal plates. Or Noir is held in the permanent collection of the International Perfume Museum in Grasse and is cited in histories of perfume [9]. Or Black was given a five-star rating in Luca Turin's perfume guide Parfums: Le Guide [10].

On the jewellery side, the Free Diamond and the "parfum bijou" concept are the innovations most often cited, both turning on the idea of a form — a stone, a scent — set inside a clean geometric structure. The Bali spa range extends the brand into body care, with massage oils, creams, lotions and gels linked to the Minimale fragrance world [4].

Beyond the museum placements of Or Noir and the Free Diamond, Morabito's work has drawn institutional and press attention over several decades. Or Black's five-star entry in Luca Turin's guide remains the brand's most-cited fragrance accolade. In 2013 Morabito received the Honorary Citizen medal of Marseille from the city's mayor, Jean-Claude Gaudin [10]. He has also been associated with a range of artists and performers, including César, Arman, Salvador Dalí, Vasarely, Andy Warhol and Keith Haring, and worked with the violinist Ivry Gitlis and the singer Grace Jones [11].

In 2006 Morabito won a copyright case against Dolce & Gabbana over the design of his 1976 Plot Watch, and was awarded 150,000 euros in damages [10].

The brand is active. Pascal Morabito, aged 80 in 2025, continues to work from his base in Bali, the Place Vendôme boutique remains in operation, and Parfums Pascal Morabito has continued to release fragrances into the 2020s.
