Overview
Pierre Guillaume is an independent French niche perfume house founded by the perfumer of the same name. Its commercial headquarters sit in the Palais Royal district of Paris, while creation and manufacturing take place in the Auvergne region of central France, inside the Parc Naturel Régional des Volcans. The house was originally known as Parfumerie Générale, often abbreviated to PG, before adopting the founder's name [6].
The company dates its formal establishment to 2005 [4], and describes 2025 as its twentieth anniversary. Independent perfume editorial more commonly cites 2002 [6], the year Pierre Guillaume composed his first fragrance and the commercial debut of the original Collection Parfumerie Générale; the roughly three-year gap reflects the difference between that fragrance debut and the later founding of the maison as a company rather than a genuine dispute. The house remains active, producing more than a hundred perfume references distributed internationally.
Origin and founders
Pierre Guillaume grew up in a family of chemists and, by his own account, collected essential oils and fragrant materials from childhood. He composed his first fragrance at the age of twenty-five, an attempt to reproduce the scent of his father's cigar cellar. The result, numbered and titled Coze (No. 2), was a spicy-tobacco composition built on what the house calls the Epicene-Gamma base, a mixture of chili, cloves and nutmeg [2]. The New York Times perfume critic Chandler Burr described its creator in the mid-2000s as "a young French chemist" who "concocted Europe's coolest new fragrance" [2].
The debut launched the Collection Parfumerie Générale, and the brand initially carried that name. Editorial coverage records a later rebranding to Pierre Guillaume, structured at the time around three lines: Parfumerie Générale, Huitième Art and Collection Croisière [6].
History and milestones
Pierre Guillaume established his own company, Pierre Guillaume Diffusion, in 2010, equipping it with in-house production tools including a composition studio, a raw-material cellar and a dedicated packaging line. A second workshop followed in 2015 to support the company's growth. In 2023 the house completed a new Manufacture in Auvergne, bringing administration, a design studio, production units, logistics and a boutique together on one site [2]. The company marks 2025 as its twentieth anniversary year.
Philosophy and positioning
Pierre Guillaume presents itself as a house devoted solely to perfume, summarised in its own words as: "At PIERRE GUILLAUME PARIS we only make perfume and that's already a lot." The company states an aim to offer a "contemporary, inventive, poetic and portable perfumery" while retaining what it describes as complete creative and financial independence. Its tagline is "Independent perfume designer."
The fragrances are composed primarily as unisex scents, numbered consecutively, with their names appearing only as subtitles and the compositions filled into plain transparent and solid glass bottles [6]. This numbered, evolving style has positioned the house within the niche-perfumery segment, distinct from mainstream designer fragrance.
Products and innovation
The house's catalogue centres on perfume, alongside scented candles, body care and home scents. Beyond the founding Coze, fragrances frequently cited in editorial coverage include Aomassai (No. 10), Musc Maori (No. 4), Cadjmere, Isparta and Un Crime Exotique [6]. The current range is organised into several collections, among them Numbered, White, Black, Cruise, Confidential and Contemplation.
Manufacturing is carried out in-house across two Auvergne sites: the Clermont-Ferrand Manufacture, which houses the creation studio, raw-material cellar and packaging line, and L'Atelier de Plauzat, used as a technical platform with dry storage and candle ripening. According to the company, operations comply with the ISO 22716 good-manufacturing standard for cosmetics, and its perfumes are evaluated by toxicologists and not tested on animals, in line with European regulations. The house also emphasises sustainability, saying it prefers local French suppliers to reduce its carbon footprint, sorts waste, produces in small continuous series to limit overstock and seeks second lives for discontinued packaging.
Beyond its own label, Pierre Guillaume composes fragrances for other houses, including the Italian brand Laboratorio Olfattivo and Phaedon [7], and has created bespoke olfactory identities for hotels and businesses such as the Hôtel du Louvre and a feather workshop associated with the Moulin Rouge [5].
Recognition and press
Alongside Chandler Burr's early notice in The New York Times, the founder has been the subject of niche perfume editorial and interviews, including a feature in the French magazine Technikart in 2023 [2]. The specialist blog Now Smell This has reviewed the house and its numbered fragrances since 2005 [6]. No formal awards are recorded in the available sources.
Current status
The house is active. Its most recent documented activity includes the 2023 opening of the new Auvergne Manufacture, brand collaborations continuing through 2022, and the stated twentieth-anniversary year in 2025. The company reports a manufacture employing fifteen staff and producing around a hundred perfume references. It describes distribution of 415 retailers across 37 countries [4]; an older editorial figure put this at roughly 250 points in 21 countries [6], a difference the newer brand-stated figures attribute to growth over time.
