Overview
Pink Sugar is an Italian fragrance and body-care brand built around a cotton-candy gourmand scent of the same name. It began as the debut perfume of Aquolina, a house owned by Selectiva S.p.A. of Alessandria, and grew into a full line of sweet, candy-themed eaux de toilette and body products. The signature fragrance is widely credited with launching the modern wave of "ultra-gourmand" perfumes — dessert-like scents built on sugar, caramel and vanilla.
Most editorial and retail sources place the launch in 2004 [12], though one early review dates it to 2003 [10]. The brand remains active: its Italian site lists an expanding product range, it maintains social accounts under the handle @pinksugar_real, and its signature scent reached a twenty-year milestone in 2024 [13].
Origin and ownership
Pink Sugar arrived in 2004 as the first perfume from the Italian brand Aquolina, which describes itself as having spent more than twenty years in what it calls the gourmet body-care sector. Aquolina sits under Selectiva S.p.A., a company established in 2001 that owns both the Aquolina and Pink Sugar names [9]. Selectiva is in turn a subsidiary of Paglieri, a private Italian consumer-goods group founded in 1876 by Luigi Paglieri and his son Lodovico, with roots in a shop that opened in Alessandria in 1807 [9]. Paglieri operates across personal care, home care and fragrance in more than fifty countries, and its portfolio also includes the long-running Felce Azzurra cologne line.
The brand's headquarters share Paglieri's home city of Alessandria, in the Piedmont region of northwest Italy.
The signature fragrance
The original Pink Sugar eau de toilette is a floral fruity gourmand aimed at women, structured around the smell of pink cotton candy. Published note breakdowns list raspberry, orange, bergamot and fig leaf at the top; cotton candy, licorice, strawberry and red berries at the heart; and caramel, vanilla, musk, tonka bean and sandalwood in the base [12]. The company markets it as "sweet, fresh and irresistible," a scent inspired by the softness of candy floss.
Sources disagree on who composed it. Fragrantica and the retailer Liberty Perfume credit perfumer Shyamala Maisondieu, working through the fragrance house Givaudan [12]. An earlier 2014 review by Bois de Jasmin instead names Pierre Nuyens [10]. The 2004-versus-2003 dating carries a similar split between the same two sources.
According to Fragrantica, the perfume's commercial pull was unexpected: as it became a best-seller, the wider industry followed with its own sweet and dessert-themed scents, forming the trend now known as ultra-gourmand [12]. Liberty Perfume describes Pink Sugar as a cult classic that sold strongly across the United States, Russia, Japan, France and Italy, and that "captured the imagination of young girls in particular." The scent is closely tied to the Y2K era and its taste for playful, candy-sweet fragrance.
Product line and positioning
Beyond the original, Pink Sugar has extended into a family of eaux de toilette, each with a matching set of body products such as body mist, hair perfume, shower gel, body lotion and body oil. The line includes Lollipink, a fruity-floral scent the company frames as a spring fragrance; Lollilove, described as sweet and summery; and the paired Berry Blast and Creamy Sunshine, positioned as lighter, more effervescent options. Gift sets combining a fragrance with a body product are sold through channels including Amazon.
The brand leans heavily on the symbolism of the colour pink. In its own words, "pink means smiles, heartthrobs, hopes, dreams," and stands for "imagination and emotion, sweetness and surprise, a return to childhood and the desire to grow up." Its messaging is playful and youthful, addressed to a confident audience through taglines such as "Live Love your present." Liberty Perfume notes the brand's "100% Made in Italy" positioning within the gourmet fragrance space.
Recognition
The signature fragrance has drawn sustained editorial attention. In 2014, Bois de Jasmin gave it four out of five stars, calling it long-lasting and tenacious and singling out its drydown of "confectioner's sugar on warm brioche" [10]. In 2024, Fragrantica published a twenty-year retrospective, "Twenty Years of Sugar, Cotton Candy and Dessert," crediting Pink Sugar with helping to launch the ultra-gourmand category [13].
Current status
Pink Sugar is active. Its official website is live and lists newer additions such as Lollilove, Berry Blast and Creamy Sunshine, and the brand keeps an active social presence on Instagram and TikTok. Its parent group, Paglieri, continues to operate internationally.
