Summary

Overview

POLA is a Japanese prestige skincare and cosmetics brand based in Tokyo, best known for anti-aging research and a long-standing direct-sales tradition. It traces its origins to 1929, when the chemist Shinobu Suzuki began making hand cream for his wife [9]. Today the brand sits within Pola Orbis Holdings, a listed Japanese cosmetics group, and is sold across Japan and roughly a dozen Asian markets alongside a smaller international presence.

The company remains active: it continues to launch products and expand abroad, with a new WRINKLE SHOT serum introduced at the start of 2025 [7] and a Shanghai management entity established by its parent in early 2024.

Origin and founders

POLA began not as a business but as a personal gesture. Its founder, Shinobu Suzuki, was a chemist who noticed how rough his wife's hands had become from hard work and taught himself to make a hand cream for her. The company describes this hand cream as the origin of POLA, "motivated by love for another person rather than business." From that starting point Suzuki set out a guiding principle that still shapes the company: to deliver the best products directly to each customer, together with care suited to that person.

Sources place the founding in 1929, when Suzuki established the brand [9]. POLA's own history pages state only that the company has "more than 90 years" of history, without naming the year; independent records, including a Foreign Press Center Japan profile marking the brand's 85th anniversary in September 2013, corroborate the 1929 date [9]. A separate founding year of 2006 appears in some databases, including Wikidata, which lists an inception of 29 September 2006 [8]; this refers to the establishment of the present holding company rather than the brand itself (see Ownership).

History and milestones

Direct selling has defined POLA from early on. The first "POLA Lady" — a travelling beauty specialist selling and advising in person — was hired in 1937, eight years after the company began [9]. That model grew into a large network of beauty consultants across Japan. In 2005 the company introduced its "POLA THE BEAUTY" stores, combining door-to-door sales with esthetic-salon services; according to POLA, this format has since grown to around 2,500 outlets nationwide.

The brand's most cited recent milestone came in 2017, when it launched WRINKLE SHOT SERUM. POLA describes it as Japan's first anti-wrinkle serum built around NEI-L1, a proprietary quasi-drug active for wrinkle repair, and says the ingredient followed research that began in 2002. The company states that NEI-L1 was approved as a quasi-drug active in July 2016 and that in January 2017 it became the first company in Japan to receive approval for an anti-wrinkle quasi-drug [6]. A successor, WRINKLE SHOT SERUM DUO, was introduced on 1 January 2025 [7].

Ownership

POLA is owned by Pola Orbis Holdings, a Tokyo-based cosmetics group listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange under ticker 4927. The holding company was established in 2006 to modernise corporate governance and manage a multi-brand portfolio, with the POLA brand — founded in 1929 — as one of its businesses [10]. Alongside POLA, the group's brands include ORBIS, Jurlique, THREE, DECENCIA and FUJIMI.

The group has expanded partly through acquisition. Its parent bought the Australian skincare brand Jurlique for $355 million [11], adding a natural-skincare line to a portfolio otherwise weighted toward science-led Japanese prestige brands.

Philosophy and positioning

POLA frames its work around three words: "Science, Art, and Love." As the company puts it, Science means innovation through scientific curiosity, Art means creating surprise and emotion through beauty and technique, and Love means building lasting relationships with respect for each individual. The emphasis on the individual customer echoes the founder's original aim of hand-delivering the right product and care to each person, which the brand cites as the reason it places such weight on direct sales.

In the market, POLA sits at the luxury end of Japanese skincare. Retail-editorial coverage describes it as a prestige brand known for advanced anti-aging research and science-driven formulas [14], and associates it with the broader J-beauty category. Its parent has described the two main brands, POLA and ORBIS, as generating more than 90 percent of the group's beauty-care sales [10].

Products and innovation

POLA's flagship line is B.A, an anti-aging range that the company builds around what it calls the "Bio-Active Theory" — a belief in drawing out the latent potential within each person's skin. B.A spans skincare, makeup and beauty supplements, and includes a premium serum, B.A GRANDLUXE III, described by the company as its state-of-the-art product. Its research for the line reaches into what POLA calls the 98 percent of DNA once dismissed as "junk," focusing on a gene, LINC00942, as part of an epigenomics approach to firmer skin.

Beyond B.A, the brand's hero products include WRINKLE SHOT, its approved anti-wrinkle serum, and White Shot, a brightening line. The latter draws on Rucinol, a skin-lightening active that POLA says it developed after a decade of research. These proprietary ingredients — NEI-L1 for wrinkles, Rucinol for brightening — sit at the centre of the brand's identity as a science-led house.

Current status

POLA is active. It is part of a large, publicly traded cosmetics group and continues both to release products and to expand internationally. Its most recent visible activity includes the January 2025 launch of WRINKLE SHOT SERUM DUO and its parent's establishment of a Shanghai management entity in early 2024 [7]. The brand is sold across Japan and has expanded into roughly a dozen countries and areas across Asia, alongside a smaller international footprint.
