Summary

Overview

Pranarôm is a Belgian aromatherapy laboratory that develops and sells chemotyped essential oils and natural-health products. It was founded by Dominique Baudoux, a pharmacist and aromatologist, and is based in Ghislenghien, Belgium [9]. The company is part of the Inula Group, whose majority stake was acquired by the private-equity firm Ardian in October 2018 [8].

The brand's own laboratory page dates its founding to 1991, describing a three-person family business selling what it calls "100% pure and organic chemotyped Essential Oils" [2]. Ardian's 2018 acquisition announcement instead gives 1985 as the founding year [8]; the earlier date may reflect a predecessor entity or Baudoux's essential-oil work in the early 1980s. Pranarôm sits in the health and pharmacy channel rather than mainstream cosmetics, and its products are sold through pharmacies, natural-product stores and health professionals.

Origin & founders

Pranarôm was established by Dominique Baudoux, who came from a family of pharmacists and pioneered essential-oil research in Belgium during the 1980s. According to the company, he went on to teach as an aromatologist in Japan, Quebec and South Africa. The laboratory's account describes a modest start: at its founding the company consisted of three people selling chemotyped essential oils, and it frames itself as "a family business at its core" [2].

From early on the brand built its identity around the chemotype — the specific biochemical profile of an essential oil, which can vary between plants of the same species depending on where and how they grow. Pranarôm describes a chemotype as "an identity card of each essential oil" and applies an HECT label (from the French Huile Essentielle ChémoType) to oils it says are precisely identified both botanically and chemically.

History & milestones

In the early 2000s the company established operations in Madagascar, and in 2009 it launched the AROMABE project, a sustainable-cultivation programme in Antsirabe that it says provides employment for more than a hundred people [2]. Around 2021 the brand marketed a thirtieth-anniversary milestone, promoting "30 years Scientific expertise in Aromatherapy" [1] — a framing consistent with its stated 1991 founding.

The most significant corporate change came in 2018, when Ardian agreed to acquire a majority stake in the parent Inula Group from Vendis Capital, founder and chairman Dominique Baudoux, and chief executive Sergio Calandri [8].

Ownership

Pranarôm is part of the Inula Group, a Belgian natural-therapies company that also includes the brands HerbalGem and Biofloral. According to Ardian's announcement, Inula was formed by combining Pranarôm and HerbalGem, and the group reported consolidated sales of €85 million in 2017, selling through six sales subsidiaries in Belgium, France, Spain, Italy, Portugal and the United States, with partners in more than twenty countries [8]. In October 2018, Ardian acquired a majority stake in the group; Calandri was reported to reinvest alongside the new owner.

Philosophy & positioning

Pranarôm positions itself as a scientific and medical aromatherapy laboratory rather than a cosmetics brand. It summarises its purpose as "Pioneers of natural remedies, we continually develop and share our expertise to improve health and lives," and states an aim to "actively contribute to better health and improve the lives of our consumers." The company frames its work around scientific rigour, knowledge sharing, responsible sourcing and respect for traditional know-how, and describes its parent group as positioning itself as a world reference in aromatherapy and natural therapies.

The brand's quality language is built on three claims it repeats across its oils: that they are "100% natural" with no synthetic molecules or chemical emulsifiers, "100% pure" and not mixed with other oils or alcohol, and "100% integral," meaning all of the plant's active molecules are extracted.

Products & innovation

The laboratory's catalogue centres on more than 250 chemotyped essential oils, alongside virgin plant oils, hydrosols (floral waters), diffusers and food supplements. Its products are grouped into named ranges aimed at particular needs, including OleoCaps+, a line of pre-dosed essential-oil capsules; Aromaforce, focused on immunity and respiratory health; PranaBB, a range for babies and mothers; the trademarked supplement line Aromaboost; and Aromapic, a set of anti-mosquito and pest products.

Pranarôm places unusual emphasis on quality control and research for a brand of its size. It says it harvested 540 tonnes of raw materials in 2022 and carries out roughly 1,500 analyses a year across its 250 oils, using chromatography, mass spectrometry and an "aromatogram" that measures antibacterial activity. The company describes itself as "the only laboratory that tests each batch of essential oil at least twice before bottling" — once before purchase and again on receipt [6]. It also reports maintaining a research database of some 50,000 scientific publications and more than forty collaborations with universities, hospitals and nursing homes [4]. Among the findings it highlights are studies it says show tea tree oil acting on the H1N1 virus at a concentration of 0.0006% and combinations of antibiotics and essential oils overcoming resistant bacteria [4].

Sustainability

Pranarôm describes itself as the first aromatherapy laboratory to promote Demeter-certified essential oils, which are produced using biodynamic farming methods [5]. The company says its main site runs on 100% renewable electricity and that 93% of the waste at its Ghislenghien facility is recycled or recovered for energy. It also reports packaging changes such as containers made from recycled PET for its Aromaboost line, and sources all of its French lavender and lavandin domestically. In 2024, a partnership with the organisation Goods to Give resulted in more than 135,000 products being donated to people in need [5].

Current status

Pranarôm remains active. It operates an e-commerce site with current promotions, and its parent Inula Group reported corporate-responsibility activity in 2024. The company continues to sell across multiple regions, including through pharmacy and natural-store channels in Norway.
