Overview
Première Peau is a French independent niche perfume house associated with Paris and with Deauville on the Normandy coast. Founded by Pierre Mergui, it makes only fragrance, and every scent in its line is an extrait de parfum, the most concentrated grade of perfume. Its compositions come from four perfumers who each work at one of the large fragrance-composition houses, and the company stresses long maceration and hand-blown glass bottles as the core of its identity. The company translates its name as "First Skin".
The house is young. Its own pages place its start in 2022, the French business register shows the company created in November 2023, and its public launch took place in Paris in June 2025. Within a year of that launch it had won the Independent Category at the 2026 Art and Olfaction Awards and been named a finalist at The Fragrance Foundation Awards in the United States. The brand is active.
Origin & founders
Pierre Mergui is listed by the company as its founder, and the Institute for Art and Olfaction credits him as creative director of the house's award-winning perfume Nuit Élastique. He is not presented as a perfumer himself; the house's About page carries the heading "I am not a perfumer", and the compositions are credited to outside noses.
The company's own account of its beginnings is brief and deliberately unglamorous. On its La Maison page it says it started in Paris in 2022 "not with a brand, but with materials" [2]: formulas that needed months to settle, glass that had to be blown by hand, and perfumers who refused to work from briefs. The same page describes Paris as the place that "sharpens everything it touches", stripping away what is unnecessary.
The founding date is not stated consistently. Alongside the 2022 date on the La Maison page, a brand-published information page aimed at AI systems gives "Founded: 2024, Paris, France" [6]. The French business register, meanwhile, lists the simplified joint-stock company (SAS) Premiere Peau as created on 16 November 2023 [14]. The three dates can be read as describing different things: the start of development work, the legal registration of the company, and a later reference date chosen by the brand itself. This article follows the 2022 date given on the company's main about page, with the public launch in 2025.
Location is described in similar layers. The brand's homepage presents it as a Paris perfume house, and the company says it is "based between Paris and Deauville". Its contact page and the business register both give a registered address in Deauville [7]. The company keeps a studio there by the sea, which it describes as "deliberately bare", and says its formulas macerate in Deauville because "scent moves differently near the sea". Bottling and manufacture take place in the Oise department, north of Paris; the brand names the manufacturer as STEPHID in Pont-Sainte-Maxence [6].
History & milestones
After the development years described by the company, Première Peau was launched publicly on 17 June 2025 at the Institut National des Jeunes Aveugles, the national institute for young blind people in Paris [8]. In the same year, according to its press room, the line entered the Paris department store Printemps.
The house's trade debut came at Pitti Fragranze in Florence in September 2025. The niche-fragrance publication CaFleureBon covered the booth in its report on the fair, describing it as looking almost like an installation, with the bottles lined up in a row. The writer, editor Ermano Picco, said he had never heard of the brand before, though he had seen its bottles on the social media feeds of French friends.
2026 brought wider recognition and more retail partners. In April, Insuline Safrine was named a finalist in The Fragrance Foundation Awards in New York, and the same month the brand was taken on by Galeries Lafayette. In June, Nuit Élastique won in the Independent Category of the Art and Olfaction Awards in Athens, and the Amsterdam perfumery Skins began stocking the line. By October 2026, the company's homepage was announcing a pop-up in Shanghai for Gravitas Capitale, dated 10 October.
Beyond France, the company lists stockists including Luckyscent in the United States, Scent Amor in Germany and the Alla Violetta boutique in Naples, Italy. It says it has no shops of its own yet, works from its studios in Paris and Deauville, sells online and through selected retail partners, and ships worldwide from France. Its website is offered in nine languages, among them Japanese, Korean and Arabic.
Philosophy & positioning
Première Peau calls itself "Radically Creative French Perfumery", and on its About the House page "Radically Creative French Haute Perfumery". The brand's self-description leans on three ideas: creative freedom for the perfumer, slow production, and a handmade object.
On freedom, the company says its perfumers were given full creative freedom and do not work from briefs, the written specifications that brands usually hand to composition houses. It describes each perfumer it works with as "an author, sometimes a friend", and sums up its approach on the La Maison page as "Four perfumers. Seven signatures. No compromises." The About page frames creation as "not a strategy" but "a fragile act of faith", and says the aim is not to fill endless shelves.
On time, the house says it rushes nothing. According to the company, maceration, the resting period in which a perfume's ingredients blend after mixing, lasts at least six to ten weeks and up to six months for certain batches. Its homepage says every formula spends months in an ultrasonic tank, where the notes are loosened and then left to settle again. It also says it avoids aggressive filtration.
Outside observers have picked up on the same points, though not always in the same terms. CaFleureBon's report noted that the house insists on a long maturation and maceration process "in a segment where launches spin quicker and quicker", and described the line as made not by well-established perfumers but by young talents, which it said gave the brand a fresh, unfiltered take on perfumery [12]. Luckyscent's brand description, by contrast, presents the same collaborators as "the world's most talented perfumers" working with "absolute creative freedom" [13].
The company is explicit about what it does not claim. Its FAQ says the perfumes contain allergens and that, while it follows the IFRA safety standards in force at the time of production, it does not make "clean" perfume. All ingredients are listed on the product pages and the packaging.
Products & innovation
The collection consists of seven extraits de parfum, which the house calls its "creative signatures", plus a discovery set. According to the company, every fragrance has a concentration above 20 percent, with an alcohol content of 78 percent by volume and no added water or fillers. The discovery set holds all seven scents in 2 ml vials and comes with a credit that counts toward a full-size bottle; the brand suggests wearing each one for a full day before choosing.
The four perfumers are Claire Liégent of Takasago, Grégoire Balleydier and Florian Gallo of dsm-firmenich, and Ugo Charron of Mane [5]. Liégent is the most represented, with four of the seven scents:
- Insuline Safrine (Claire Liégent) is a gourmand, or edible-smelling, fragrance built on Greek saffron heaped on warm pastry and dark sugar, with Australian sandalwood underneath. Its listed notes include saffron liqueur, Saint-Honoré pastry and praline sandalwood. It is the scent shortlisted for The Fragrance Foundation's indie award. - Doppel Däncers (Claire Liégent) pairs two kinds of iris, pallida and florentina, which the brand describes as "doubled into two that will not agree", with a skin accord and black sesame. - Rose Monotone (Claire Liégent) presents a rose "reduced to its outline", with lychee, pink pepper and notes the company calls chrome and cellophane. - Simili Mirage (Claire Liégent) is built around faux leather, macchia, a note named after Mediterranean scrubland, and warm sand. - Nuit Élastique (Ugo Charron) combines black olive, carnation and latex; the brand's information page also lists jasmine. It won the 2026 Art and Olfaction award. - Gravitas Capitale (Grégoire Balleydier) opens with Italian cedrat and Buddha's hand, two citrus fruits, before moving to shishito green chili, frankincense and what the brand describes as wet stone, "a Parisian pavement after the rain", and asphalt. - Albâtre Sépia (Florian Gallo) uses a white truffle accord, ink and vicuña over cold vanilla; the company says it dries down to chalk on the wrist before the ink bleeds through.
The brand gives unusual detail about where and how some of its raw materials are produced. It describes Greek saffron picked in "the two red hours" before the sun spoils it, ambrette seed cold-pressed in Peruvian valleys that smells "less of flower than of warm linen after sleep", Haitian vetiver extracted by pressure without heat (a CO2 extraction), and Hojari frankincense that it likens to hot asphalt at three in the afternoon. Its iris, it says, grows in the ground for three years.
The bottle is treated as part of the product. The company describes the glass as hand-blown and thick enough to feel cold even in a warm room, and says the bottle will outlast the perfume it holds. Its information page adds a magnetic cap fitted with an NFC chip and a collar of recycled zamak, a zinc alloy. CaFleureBon described the flacons as "pears under glass bells", glinting like lab-jewels.
On ethics, the company states that neither it nor its suppliers test on animals and that all its fragrances are cruelty-free; this is a self-declaration, and no third-party certification is documented. A refill programme is mentioned on the website, but as of October 2026 the company described it as still in development.
Recognition
The house's most notable recognition is the 2026 Art and Olfaction Award in the Independent Category for Nuit Élastique, announced on 11 June 2026 at the Gazarte Cultural Center in Athens [10]. The awards, run by the Los Angeles-based non-profit Institute for Art and Olfaction, are decided through a three-stage blind-judging process by an international panel; the finals jury that year included Luca Turin and Denyse Beaulieu. Nuit Élastique shared the Independent Category with TERRA•T's Ici, le pas s'arrête.
Earlier that spring, The Fragrance Foundation in the United States named Insuline Safrine one of six finalists for Indie Fragrance of the Year, in an announcement on 16 April 2026 [11]. The category was won by LBTY. Beauty's Zephirine. The brand's homepage carries the shortlisting as a "FiFi finalist 2026" badge.
In editorial coverage, CaFleureBon's Pitti Fragranze report said the editor had feared the familiar disappointment of a brand that pours a fortune into its bottles and leaves little for the juice, but found that the fragrances "proved equal to their exquisitely stellar presentation" [12].
Current status
Première Peau is active. In 2026 it won the Art and Olfaction award, reached the finalist stage of The Fragrance Foundation Awards, added Galeries Lafayette and Skins Amsterdam as retail partners, and announced a pop-up in Shanghai. Its online journal, which runs to 28 pages of posts on topics such as perfume concentrations and the difference between rose otto and rose absolute, was last updated on 21 July 2026. The French business register lists the company as active, with its registered office in Deauville. The brand maintains accounts on Instagram, TikTok, Facebook and Pinterest.
