Overview
Primavera is a German natural-cosmetics and aromatherapy company based in Oy-Mittelberg, in the Allgäu region of Bavaria. It was founded on 26 May 1986 by Ute Leube and Kurt Ludwig Nübling, who built the business around pure essential oils and organically grown plant ingredients [2]. Trading formally as PRIMAVERA LIFE GmbH, the company sells essential oils, aromatherapy products, natural skincare and body care, and room fragrances, and describes itself as a pioneer of organic aromatherapy [7].
The company remains active. It has scheduled a 40-year jubilee campaign for 2026 and continues to launch and reformulate products, alongside recent sustainability recognition [6].

Origin and founders
Ute Leube and Kurt Ludwig Nübling started the company after encountering the effects of essential oils during their travels [2]. Primavera's first range, eighteen essential and base oils, was presented at a seminar in 1986 and, according to the company, sold out almost immediately, an early sign of demand for what was then a niche category. The founders framed their work as a lifelong commitment to developing natural products of high quality while treating nature responsibly. Nübling also established a sister venture, PRIMAVERA LIGHT, in July 1987.
History and milestones
The business grew quickly from its small original workshop in Sulzberg. In 1992 it introduced its first natural cosmetics line for facial care, moving beyond oils into finished skincare. Two years later, in 1994, it was renamed PRIMAVERA LIFE GmbH and adopted a redesigned oval logo [2]. In 1999 it introduced what it describes as the first scented advent calendar, the Duftkalender, still assembled by hand in the Allgäu.
In October 2010 the company relocated to a new, carbon-neutral facility in Oy-Mittelberg, then employing around 130 people. Over the following decade it expanded into professional aroma care for nursing settings, a children's line, and wellbeing-focused ranges, while deepening a network of organic cultivation partnerships that today spans regions including Bhutan, Nepal, Cambodia, France, Italy and Turkey.
Philosophy and positioning
Primavera positions itself around a close relationship between people and nature, using the phrase "Mensch & Natur" (People and Nature) as a central value. According to the company, its aim is to support people's health and wellbeing through pure plant power in the highest organic quality. It stresses that only completely pure essential oils, drawn from a single source plant, deliver the intended therapeutic effect, and says it avoids synthetic and nature-identical additives [5].
Products and sustainability
The company's catalogue centres on pure essential oils, organic care oils and plant waters, alongside natural facial and body care and room fragrances; a third-party profile put the total range at around 700 products [7]. It reports that about 85 percent of its certifiable raw materials come from controlled organic or Demeter cultivation, and that more than 95 percent of its overall product range is vegan, with exceptions limited to propolis, beeswax and honey from ecological beekeeping [5]. The company holds Leaping Bunny certification for cruelty-free cosmetics and lists NATRUE certification for its natural cosmetics [5].
Sustainability is presented as foundational rather than an add-on. The company says mindful, responsible treatment of people and nature underlies all of its decisions, and it traces materials back to the field through direct work with organic farming partners. It has run long-term cultivation and social projects in partner countries, including a lemongrass partnership in Bhutan dating to the early 1990s and a financed soap workshop supporting families there [7]. It has also collaborated with Navdanya, the Indian environmental organisation associated with Vandana Shiva.
Recognition
Primavera has received a series of German awards, most of them tied to sustainability. It was named a "Marke des Jahrhunderts" (Brand of the Century) in 2015 [2] and won a Spa Diamond Award in the sustainability category in 2017. In 2022 it received the German Sustainability Award in the biodiversity category and a fifth Green Brand Award [2]. In 2025 its work in Bhutan earned a special award at the International German Sustainability Prize [6].
Current status
The company is active. It has announced a 40-year jubilee campaign for 2026, scheduled its Rosenfest event for the same year, and continued releasing new and reformulated products [6]. It operates flagship stores in the Allgäu and in Berlin, and its products are distributed across several European markets, including in the Nordics.
