Overview
Profumum Roma is an Italian niche fragrance house based in Rome, founded in 1996 [1]. It is run by four members of the Durante family and belongs to the legal entity L.C. Durante S.p.A. Alongside its perfumes, the house makes body milk, body oil and shower products; it also sells home items such as ambient diffusers and candles that fall outside the beauty range.
The company frames scent as memory, describing its perfumes as compositions that commemorate the city of Rome and aim to transmit emotions rather than follow trends. It remains active, with new fragrances appearing in perfume databases as recently as 2025 and distribution across European and North American niche retailers [8].
Origin and founders
The Durante story begins not in perfumery but in Sant'Elena Sannita, a small hilltop village near Isernia with a long trade in knife-grinding. According to the company's own account, Celestino Durante returned from the Second World War and, with his wife Luisa, left the village to seek work in Rome, joined by other men from the same town [1]. Their repair shops gradually began stocking shaving soap sold by weight, hair lotions and colognes, and over time the knife-grinders became established perfumers in the city. Luckyscent, a US retailer, describes the same trajectory: a tiny storefront that "grew into a chain of stores, featuring curios, hand-made soaps, fragrances and beauty products" [6].
That chain passed to the next generation. Celestino and Luisa's grandchildren — Giuseppe, Luciano, Maria and Felice Durante — inherited the business but felt constrained by an increasingly standardised, mass-market perfumery. The company says this frustration led the four to break away and, in 1996, create the autonomous brand Profumum Roma [1]. The brand's own text describes them both as the four grandchildren of the founding couple and as siblings; both framings refer to the same people.
Sources differ on one detail of the earlier generation. Profumum Roma's "Our story" page names the grandmother Luisa [1], while a 2013 review on the perfume blog Kafkaesque spells the name "Lucia" [4]. The variance concerns a family member rather than a founder, and the brand's own spelling is the more direct source.
Products and positioning
Profumum Roma is generally classed as a niche house, and its output centres on perfume. Editorial write-ups recurrently name a core set of scents, including Acqua di Sale, built around sea salt, myrtle and cedar; the woody Arso; the gourmand Dulcis in Fundo; and the incense-led Olibanum [3]. Acqua di Sale in particular is repeatedly singled out as a signature scent across best-of selections [5]. Beyond fragrance, the house lists body milk, body oil and shower products in its range [1].
A distinguishing technical point runs through third-party coverage: the perfumes are unusually concentrated. Reviewers cite a perfume-oil level of 43%, with some sources referencing a 43–46% range, described as well above the industry norm [4]. The company positions its fragrances as natural-leaning compositions tied to Italian landscapes and memory; Luckyscent notes that the scents are "designed to work equally well on men and women" [6].
The house has drawn sustained attention from specialist perfume media. Kafkaesque published a long-form review of Ambra Aurea in 2013, and CaFleureBon has featured several of the brand's fragrances, including Arso, Ambra Aurea and Acqua e Zucchero.
Ownership
Profumum Roma trades under L.C. Durante S.p.A., the family company identified on its own site [1]. No acquisitions or outside ownership are documented in available sources, and the brand presents itself as remaining under the control of the founding family.
Current status
The house is active. It continues to release fragrances — the newest entries in perfume databases are dated 2025, with a catalogue of roughly 46 perfumes — and is stocked across niche retailers in Europe and the United States, including Nordic markets [8]. In editorial coverage written around 2024 and 2025, the brand is described as approaching its 30th year [5].
