Summary

Overview

Puressentiel is a family-owned aromatherapy and natural-health company founded in 2005 by Isabelle and Marco Pacchioni [2]. Operating formally as Laboratoire Puressentiel, it makes ready-to-use products built around essential oils, plant oils and hydrolats: sprays, roll-ons, shampoos and room sprays aimed at everyday complaints such as insect bites, aching muscles, blocked airways, head lice and poor sleep. A 2021 profile in Paris Match Belgique described it as a Brussels-founded business with its headquarters and laboratories in the Belgian capital [8].

The company has grown from a two-person venture into an international group. By 2021 it reported annual revenue of 110 million euros, a catalogue of more than 280 products and a presence in more than 100 countries. It holds B Corp certification, participates in the UN Global Compact and runs a charitable foundation that has backed more than 150 projects since 2018. The brand remains active and is led by the founders' eldest son, Rocco Pacchioni.

Origin & founders

Isabelle and Marco Pacchioni set up the laboratory together in 2005. In the company's own telling, their aim was to invent "a purer, more natural and more effective form of health" by selecting and combining natural active ingredients, while respecting both people and nature. Its history page says the couple first reshaped the market for essential oils and natural remedies as a pair, and later as a family.

Where the company was founded is reported differently. Paris Match Belgique states that it was established in Brussels by Marco and Isabelle Pacchioni and that its head office and laboratories are in Brussels [8]. Brand-sponsored education material published by the UK trade title Pharmacy Magazine says instead that Puressentiel "was founded in France in 2005" [11]. The company's own story pages give the year and the founders but name no country. This article follows the Paris Match account of a Brussels base, while noting the alternative.

The family remains closely involved. Rocco Pacchioni, the couple's eldest son, is managing director, and Marco's sister, Florence Pacchioni Borgniet, serves as vice-president for foresight and corporate social responsibility (CSR) [5]. The founders' daughters, Lola and Ornella, contribute on the creative side, according to the company. Paris Match placed Rocco Pacchioni at the company's offices on avenue Molière in Brussels.

History & milestones

Puressentiel's early growth was closely tied to pharmacies. In May 2013 the brand exhibited for the first time at Pharmagora, a French pharmacy trade show. The trade newspaper Le Quotidien du Pharmacien reported that the company used the event to point to the strong growth of the essential-oil market, and that its stand hosted a meeting with triple Olympic canoeist Tony Estanguet, then a brand ambassador [10].

Exports became an increasingly important part of the business. Around its fifteenth anniversary, the French export trade magazine Le Moci described Puressentiel as a family SME specialising in aromatherapy that was generating a record share of its activity abroad [9].

The company built a network of European subsidiaries along the way. By October 2021 it had roughly a dozen, the most recent opened in Düsseldorf, Germany, in January 2021 [8]. Paris Match reported that the brand was then present in more than 100 countries, including China, the United States and the United Arab Emirates. The Pharmacy Magazine material gives a lower figure of more than 80 countries [11]; the two numbers come from different snapshots, one of them undated.

Later milestones have mostly concerned governance and sustainability. Puressentiel joined the UN Global Compact in 2022 and received B Corp certification at the end of 2023 [3].

Ownership

Puressentiel is an independent family business. No parent company and no acquisitions are documented, and members of the Pacchioni family hold the senior management roles. The Swiss online shop is run by a local company, Puressentiel Swiss SA, registered in Geneva, with Isabelle Pacchioni named as its publisher.

Philosophy & positioning

The company sums up its outlook in three values: naturalness, commitment and performance. Under the first, it says protecting the environment is a matter of course, and that it uses raw materials with respect for ecosystems, biodiversity, fauna and flora. Commitment, in its words, centres on "the health and well-being of all", expressed through sustainable practices across a product's life cycle and through the work of its foundation. Performance refers to formulas with a high concentration of natural, pure active ingredients whose effectiveness and tolerance, the company says, are "proven by numerous studies".

Puressentiel frames its central mission as making aromatherapy accessible to everyone. Essential oils are not always simple to use at home, and the company's answer has been ready-to-use products that state clearly how to apply them and what precautions to take. It describes its own path as a move "from pioneer of aromatherapy to leading provider in natural health". Products are developed, according to the company, by a team of botanists, engineers, aromatherapists, toxicologists, doctors and pharmacists.

The Swiss website carries the tagline "Wirksamkeit pur | Natürliche Gesundheit", roughly "Pure efficacy | Natural health". Much of the range addresses specific everyday complaints, with a smaller group of cosmetic products such as hydrolats and plant oils.

Products & innovation

The range is organised around health needs. The main lines cover air purification, insect bites, joints and muscles, breathing (sold as Resp OK®), headaches (Migra Pure®), first aid and head lice, alongside wellness products for sleep, stress (Aroma Stress®), intimate hygiene and circulation. Several lines come in versions for babies and children, including anti-lice, anti-bite, respiratory and sleep products.

Among the products the brand features as best-sellers is its Anti-Bite Spray, which it describes as having a double action, repelling insects and soothing bites. Others are the Joint & Muscle roll-on, presented as a 99.9 percent natural formula, and an Air Purifier Room Spray that the company says contains no propellant, dyes, preservatives or synthetic fragrance. The anti-lice line includes the Pouxdoux® daily shampoo, which carries organic certification, as well as sprays, lotions supplied with a comb and a combined treatment set.

Beside these finished formulas, Puressentiel sells single ingredients for home aromatherapy: essential oils, plant oils, hydrolats (the fragrant water left over when plants are steam-distilled) and blending bases, plus diffusers and oils made for diffusion. Its organic tea tree essential oil and organic Damascus rose hydrolat are among the products it highlights. In 2021 Paris Match counted around 100 essential oils in a catalogue of more than 280 products, with roughly 30 new launches each year.

The company also publishes traceability information for its essential oils, together with an advice blog on natural health, an illustrated herb garden of plants and their oils, and a podcast called "Pure & Sensible".

Sustainability

Puressentiel groups its environmental and social policy under the name Pure Transparency Commitment®. The company says CSR has been "fully integrated" into its management since it was founded, and it aligns the framework with the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals. The commitment rests on four pillars: natural, effective and safe products; fair and sustainable sourcing; protection of the environment; and ethical and social responsibility. The company publishes a CSR roadmap and a three-year progress plan.

Two outside frameworks sit alongside this. Since 2022 the company has been a participant in the UN Global Compact, whose ten principles cover human rights, labour standards, the environment and anti-corruption. At the end of 2023 it gained B Corp certification, which assesses a company's governance, workers, community, environment and customers [3]. Puressentiel presented the certification as recognition of "almost 20 years" of work on eco-design, conserving natural resources and creating a positive social impact.

Sourcing is global. According to Paris Match, the company buys essential oils from places as far apart as Nepal and Madagascar and processes more than 37,000 tonnes of plant material a year, of which 60 percent is sourced in Europe and 70 percent through direct supply chains [8]. Rocco Pacchioni told the magazine that the business was still guided by the same values, citing natural materials and recyclable packaging.

The company's philanthropic arm, the Puressentiel Foundation, was set up in 2018 and, according to Paris Match, is officially recognised by the King Baudouin Foundation [8]. Its motto translates roughly as "living better together, naturally", and its work covers three areas: nature, children and health. Between 2018 and 2026 it supported 155 projects run by 82 associations [4]. The foundation reports that these projects planted about 1.9 million trees, protected 410 hectares of forest and 13.75 million bees, and restored 10 hectares of coral reef. On the social side it counts 45,859 children and families protected and access to health care for 77,794 people.

Recognition

No industry awards are documented for Puressentiel. Its press coverage has come mainly from business and trade titles. In October 2021 Paris Match Belgique featured the company in its "Excellence belge" series on Belgian businesses; Le Quotidien du Pharmacien covered its first Pharmagora appearance in 2013; and Le Moci profiled its success in export markets. Tony Estanguet's role as ambassador at Pharmagora is the only documented celebrity partnership.

09 /

Current status

Puressentiel is active. In 2026 its foundation was supporting 24 projects worldwide and, as of that year, stated that the call for 2028 projects would open on 15 April 2027. The company's Swiss online shop was running seasonal autumn campaigns, and the business remains independent and run by the founding family.
