Overview
Pyunkang Yul is a South Korean skincare brand that launched in March 2016 [10], built on the clinical practice of Pyunkang Eastern Medicine Clinic. It is headquartered in Daegu, with a flagship store in Seoul, and is owned by Pyunkang Oriental Medical Skin Science Research Institute Co., Ltd. The brand specialises in gentle, minimalist products for sensitive and barrier-compromised skin, drawing on traditional Korean herbal medicine. It remains active and sells internationally, with authorised sellers listed across more than 60 countries.
The name encodes the brand's premise. According to the company, "Pyun" represents comfort, "Kang" signifies health, and "Yul" stands for balance — together framed as "the optimal balance for comfortable and healthy skin" [4].

Origin and heritage
Pyunkang Yul grew out of Pyunkang Eastern Medicine Clinic, which the brand describes as Korea's largest eastern-medicine clinic specialising in skincare. On its heritage page the company traces the clinic back roughly 50 years, to "the small dream of a young eastern medicine doctor," and repeatedly invokes a "50-year heritage" in its materials. The clinic's founder is not named in the brand's public materials.
The consumer brand itself is much younger. According to the clinic's account, its doctors concluded through years of practice that "prescribed medicine alone was not enough," and that patients needed a way to care for their skin at home. Pyunkang Yul emerged from that clinical experience and was launched as a retail line in 2016 [10].
The distinction between clinic and brand accounts for a discrepancy in reported founding dates. The editorial site Knok Global describes Pyunkang Yul as "born from Pyunkang Korean Medicine Clinic, established in 1969 in Seoul" [11], while the K-beauty publication KoreaProductPost records the founding year as 2016 [10]. The earlier date refers to the originating clinic rather than the skincare brand; the brand's own e-commerce registration number, 2016-DaeguDalseong-0024, is consistent with the 2016 launch of the consumer line.
Philosophy and positioning
Pyunkang Yul positions itself around what it calls a reinterpretation of Korean eastern medicine. Where eastern medicine "does not focus solely on surface symptoms," the company says its products aim to help skin "restore its healthy balance on its own, using only essential, minimal ingredients." Its stated mission is "rediscovering true beauty, from within" [2].
That minimalism is the brand's central selling point. Knok Global characterises Pyunkang Yul as built on "a philosophy of radical minimalism in an industry obsessed with long ingredient lists" [11], and KoreaProductPost notes formulations built with only seven essential ingredients [10]. The line is aimed at sensitive, reactive, atopic and barrier-compromised skin, and is described in editorial coverage as sitting at an affordable, drugstore price point [10].
Products and ingredients
The brand's range spans cleansers, toners and mists, serums and ampoules, creams and eye care, sun care, masks, and body and hair care, along with a baby and kids line. Its signature product is the Essence Toner, which uses Milk Vetch Root (Astragalus) extract in place of water as its base. Knok Global describes it as the brand's most repurchased toner and one of the most repurchased K-beauty toners globally [11].
Pyunkang Yul builds its formulas around a small set of herbal ingredients drawn from its clinic background. Astragalus is presented as strengthening the skin's resistance to irritation; coptis for its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory action; mulberry tree extract for brightening; and fermented black tea, or kombucha, for antioxidants. Third-party reviewers have highlighted the brand's fragrance-free and colour-free formulations and its use of EWG Green-rated ingredients [9].
Science and claims
The company frames its products as clinically tested and publishes a range of self-reported figures by product line, alongside a proprietary "A.C.C. (Anti-inflammatory · Cooling · Calming) Patented Complex" [6]. For its calming line it cites reductions in redness and sebum and 48-hour moisture retention; for its kids and baby line it states "zero skin irritation: 100% proven" [6]. These figures are the brand's own and are presented without independent verification.
Current status
Pyunkang Yul is an active, globally distributed K-beauty brand. It sells through international retail platforms such as YesStyle, iHerb and Stylevana, operates a flagship store and tea house in South Korea, and lists authorised sellers across the Americas, Europe, Asia, Africa, Oceania and the Middle East — including the Nordic markets [8]. In April 2026 the Malaysian outlet BusinessToday covered the brand's launch in Malaysia, describing it as a K-beauty cult favourite [12], and the brand's website was running a 2026 promotion at the time of writing.
