Summary

Overview

Remington is a United States personal-care and grooming-appliance brand known for electric shavers, hair clippers and trimmers, and hair-styling tools such as straighteners, curling wands and dryers. Its origins trace to 1937, when the office-equipment firm Remington Rand branched into electric shavers with the Remington Model E [4][5]. Headquartered in Middleton, Wisconsin, the brand is today operated as a subsidiary of Spectrum Brands, which acquired it in 2003 [4]; it remains commercially active, with a current e-commerce catalogue and worldwide distribution.

Although it is corporately owned rather than independent, the Remington personal-care line continues under its own name. It should not be confused with Remington Arms, the firearms maker, or with the Remington typewriter business, even though all three share a common historical lineage.

Origin and history

The Remington name goes back to E. Remington and Sons, established in 1816 as a firearms manufacturer, which later expanded into typewriters, sewing machines and farm equipment. In 1927 the typewriter division merged with Rand Kardex Corporation to form Remington Rand. The personal-care story begins a decade later: according to Wikipedia, "the origin of Remington personal care products dates back to 1937 when Remington Rand began to branch out to electric shavers, starting with the Remington Model E" [4]. Encyclopedia.com similarly records that the first Remington electric shaver was introduced to the U.S. market by Remington Rand in 1937 [5].

The corporate parentage shifted repeatedly over the following decades. Remington Rand merged with Sperry Corporation in 1955 to form Sperry Rand. In 1979 the businessman Victor Kiam acquired the electric-shaver division through a leveraged buyout and renamed it Remington Products Inc. [5]. Kiam became closely tied to the brand through its television advertising, appearing in commercials with the slogan "Shaves as close as a blade, or your money back!" — and the line, often repeated, that he liked the shaver so much he bought the company [4].

Under Kiam the company moved into hair clippers and acquired Clairol's personal-care appliance business. Sources differ on the year: encyclopedia.com dates the Clairol acquisition to 1993, while Wikipedia places it in 1994 [5][4]. Ownership then passed to Vestar Capital Partners in June 1996 [5], and in 2003 the brand was acquired by Rayovac, which was later renamed Spectrum Brands [4].

Ownership

Remington is a subsidiary of Spectrum Brands. The brand's own site links to Spectrum Brands as its parent and carries a copyright notice for Empower Brands, LLC, a Spectrum Brands legal entity [2]. Wikipedia additionally lists Oak Hill Capital alongside Spectrum Brands among its parent companies, reflecting the wider holding structure [4]. The acquisition history behind that ownership runs through Victor Kiam's 1979 buyout, Vestar Capital Partners in 1996, and Rayovac in 2003, which was subsequently renamed Spectrum Brands.

Products and positioning

The brand's range centres on grooming and styling devices rather than cosmetics or consumables. It manufactures electric shavers, rotary and foil shavers, hair clippers and trimmers, epilators, blow dryers, curling irons and flat irons, along with a women-specific line marketed as "Lady Remington". Product families sold under the brand include the Remington ONE collection, Gloss, Balder and Botanicals, and the company promotes proprietary features such as its SmartPRO Sensor Technology and Twist & Curl multi-styler.

Remington frames itself as a broad, accessible personal-care brand. On its About page the company describes its mission as providing "the tools you need to elevate your unique style and find the confidence that comes from having a great look," and positions itself as a "go-to personal care brand" with a worldwide presence. Third-party coverage tends to place it at the value end of the market: a 2026 Yahoo shopping roundup named the Remington Shine Therapy straightener its "best budget" pick, contrasting it with premium options and noting that "good hair tools don't have to cost a lot" [7].

Current status

Remington is an acquired brand: since 2003 it has operated as a sub-brand of Spectrum Brands rather than as an independent company [4]. Commercially, however, it remains active. Its e-commerce site was current as of 2026, carrying live product collections and a Middleton, Wisconsin corporate address, and the brand describes its distribution as worldwide.
