Summary

Overview

Repetto is a French footwear and lifestyle house founded in 1947 by Rose Repetto in Paris [3]. It began as a maker of ballet shoes and dancewear and later expanded into ready-to-wear, leather goods and fragrance. Within the beauty market, Repetto is known for its perfume line, launched in 2013 and developed under a licensing arrangement with Inter Parfums [4]. The company remains active, with recent fashion collaborations and store openings recorded through 2024 and 2025.

Origin & founders

Rose Repetto created her first ballet shoes in 1947 in a Paris workshop she described as "just a stone's throw from the Opéra." According to the company, she was drawn to the craft through her son, the choreographer Roland Petit, who came home from dance classes complaining of sore feet [3]. She soon opened a workshop near the Opéra National de Paris, and the house went on to supply ballet shoes for the Paris Opera and other French dance companies.

An early landmark came in 1956 with the "Cendrillon" ballet flat, dedicated to Brigitte Bardot and worn by her in the 1956 film And God Created Woman. In 1959, Repetto opened a boutique at 22 rue de la Paix in Paris, near the Opera, which the company reports has remained open since.

History & milestones

After Rose Repetto's death in 1984, the brand faded from prominence. The French entrepreneur Jean-Marc Gaucher took over as chief executive in 1999 and led its revival, expanding the house internationally and repositioning it as a luxury lifestyle brand [3]. Over the following years the range broadened into footwear for women, men and children, ready-to-wear, small leather goods and fragrance. Repetto opened its first American store in the SoHo neighbourhood of New York in autumn 2015; that location closed permanently in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The house marked its 70th anniversary in 2017. In 2023, Charlotte Gaucher became Chairwoman and Chief Executive. Repetto has continued to release new collections and to collaborate with other fashion names, including a Jacquemus collaboration and a Korean flagship store in 2024, and a Marine Serre collaboration in 2025.

Ownership

No source names a corporate parent for La Maison Repetto; the house has been led by the Gaucher family since 1999. Its fragrance business, however, operates under licence. In 2012, Inter Parfums took on the creation, development and distribution of Repetto perfumes as the brand's fragrance licensee [8][5]. Inter Parfums markets the perfume line but is not the owner of the wider fashion house.

Philosophy & positioning

Repetto ties its identity to ballet and dance. The company frames its heritage around "grace, precision of movement, and a love for motion," and lists "artisanal excellence and contemporary design" among its values, under the tagline "A heritage of elegance and craftsmanship" [1]. Its own materials describe the house as an embodiment of French luxury since 1947 [2]. That dance heritage carries into the fragrances, which were conceived as an extension of the brand's ballet world.

Products & innovation

The house is best known for its ballet flats, among them the Cendrillon model linked to Brigitte Bardot. Manufacturing is centred on a factory in Saint-Médard-d'Excideuil in the Dordogne region of France, where, the company says, its footwear is made [2]. Repetto highlights a signature "returned stitching" technique — assembling the shoe upper inside out before final construction — which it presents as a distinctive part of its craft [2].

Its entry into beauty is the fragrance line. The first Repetto scent, an Eau de Toilette also known as Le Parfum, was released in 2013 and created by the perfumer Olivier Polge [4]. It was described in fragrance press as a "powdery musky rose," built on notes of pear, cherry blossom, orange blossom, rose, vanilla and amber wood. An Eau de Parfum followed in 2014, again by Polge, characterised by editorial reviewers as a more intense, gourmand composition with a vanilla heart. Sources differ on which year to attach to "the Repetto fragrance": the brand and fragrance press date the inaugural launch to the 2013 Eau de Toilette [4], while databases such as Fragrantica list a 2014 Eau de Parfum [9] — the two refer to successive concentrations rather than a disputed single date. The star ballet dancer Dorothée Gilbert has served as the face of the fragrance campaign, reinforcing the dance connection.

Current status

Repetto is an active French house with a global presence. Its most recent publicly listed activity includes the 2025 Marine Serre collaboration and a "Dance for Life" event, following 2024's Jacquemus collaboration and Korean flagship opening. The fragrance line continues to be marketed internationally under the Inter Parfums licence.
