Summary

Overview

RIO, styled by the company as "Rio the Beauty Specialists," is a British maker of at-home beauty devices and treatment tools based in Cheltenham, England. It sells electric gadgets for the home rather than cosmetics: hair-removal systems, LED light-therapy and microcurrent facial devices, electric nail files, foot spas and grooming accessories. The brand is a division of The Dezac Group Ltd, which describes Rio as a pioneer of the "beauty gadget" category, fusing salon technology with home use [9].

The company markets around three decades of experience, and its own accounts of exactly how long differ. The Rio site states "35 years of experience" as of 2026, which would place the brand's beginnings around 1991 [1]. Its parent, The Dezac Group, was itself established in 1989 — initially to sell home air ionisers before expanding into beauty, wellness and fitness — so the two dates reflect the group's history and the Rio brand's separately [8][10]. The brand remains commercially active, with UK manufacturing, multi-channel retail distribution and blog activity recorded as recently as July 2025 [4].

Origins and parent company

Rio is one of several consumer brands held by The Dezac Group Ltd, a Cheltenham-based company that styles itself "a house of brands." According to the group, it was founded in 1989 to bring cleaner indoor air into the home through a range of ionisers, and from there moved into beauty, personal care, fitness and wellness products [8]. The Rio brand grew out of that expansion into personal care.

The company presents Rio as an early entrant in home beauty electronics. Dezac describes the brand as having pioneered the beauty-gadget category by "fusing beauty know-how with salon technology to deliver innovative treatments in the home" [9]. Rio's own about page states that it introduced the first home laser hair-removal system for permanent hair removal, and points to what it calls industry-leading involvement in LED light treatments.

The registered corporate entity behind the brand is The Dezac Group Ltd (company number 02186341), which trades the consumer line as "Rio The Beauty Specialists." Alongside Rio, the group's portfolio includes the fitness brands AeroPilates and Bodi-Tek, and Reviber, a supplier of therapy products to the UK's National Health Service and to health and fitness specialists, which Dezac acquired in July 2024 [9].

Products and technology

Rio's range is organised around home versions of salon treatments rather than around a signature cosmetic. Product categories on its site span skin and eyes, hair care, nails, feet, teeth and a "home salon" line, plus accessories such as magnifying makeup mirrors and brush sets. The company frames its lineup as bringing "quality, performance and value to at home beauty treatments."

Recurring products include the 60 Second Face Lift Advanced EMS Toner, a microcurrent facial device; the 60 Second Spa Pedi electric foot file; laser and IPL (intense pulsed light) hair-removal systems marketed under names such as Salon Laser and Forever Free; and home waxing kits. The company's stated mission is to "engage consumers with a choice of exciting home beauty tools, offering quality, convenience and value."

The underlying technologies the brand emphasises are IPL and laser hair removal, LED light therapy and EMS (electrical muscle stimulation) microcurrent. Parent company Dezac holds 154 patents according to the patent-data service PatSnap, and the group states that it is certified to the ISO 9001 quality-management standard [12]. Rio offers a two-year limited warranty on its products, and its site is published in English, Dutch and Italian.

Distribution

Rio sells directly through its own website and through third-party retailers. Beyond direct online sales, its devices have been carried by UK chains including Boots, Superdrug, Argos, Currys and the online beauty retailer LOOKFANTASTIC. The brand's own store offers free UK shipping over a set order value and ships internationally, and it maintains social accounts on Instagram, Facebook and YouTube.

Company size

Reported figures for the organisation's size vary by source. LinkedIn lists The Dezac Group in the 51–200 employee band [10], while the business-data service PatSnap records 10–50 employees [12]. An earlier version of Rio's own about page stated that the company employed more than 130 staff across its Cheltenham head office and manufacturing in the Royal Forest of Dean.

Current status

RIO is an active brand. Its parent, The Dezac Group, has continued to exhibit at industry trade shows, including Cosmoprof Worldwide in Bologna and the Beauty Istanbul exhibition in 2026 [10]. The most recent article recorded on Rio's news blog is dated July 2025 [4]. The brand has limited coverage in major beauty press and no dedicated encyclopedia entry, and much of the available information comes from the company itself and its parent group.
