Overview
RMS Beauty is a cosmetics and skincare company founded in 2009 by the makeup artist Rose-Marie Swift [1]. Built around multitasking products made from what the company describes as raw, food-grade, organic and wildcrafted ingredients, the brand positions itself as an early advocate of what later became known as clean beauty. It remains independent and active, with new product lines added as recently as 2024.
The brand grew out of Swift's own frustration on set. After more than three decades working with models and photographers, she began developing formulas she said she needed but could not find, aiming for makeup that looked like skin rather than sitting on top of it.

Origin and founders
Rose-Marie Swift launched RMS Beauty in 2009 after a career backstage at photo shoots and runway shows. In interviews she has tied the brand's creation to personal health concerns about the chemicals in conventional cosmetics, and to a conviction that products could be made with safer ingredients. She has described the decision bluntly, recalling that she "couldn't stand the fact that makeup didn't look like the model's skin" and resolved to create her own line [10]. Early formulas were developed with a Canadian chemist and drew on raw-food principles; Swift has said she wanted to make something "almost edible."
Swift is also a practising astrologer, a detail that recurs in profiles of her and that she has linked to how she manages personalities on set. A 2019 Beauty Independent profile framed her as an established but still somewhat under-the-radar figure, noting the brand had grown from an initial 18 products to more than 145 [9].
History and milestones
RMS Beauty launched with three products that became its core: the Living Luminizer, the Un Cover-Up Concealer and Lip2Cheek. An early turning point came in January 2013, when the US retailer J. Crew began carrying the line and attributed the glow on its models to the Living Luminizer [9].
The company has since expanded from colour cosmetics into adjacent categories. In 2021 it introduced its first refillable product, the ReEvolve Radiance Locking Primer [4]. In 2024 it launched a three-step skincare routine built around Kakadu Plum oil [8], and in the same year released Scarlet Moon, a non-gendered natural fragrance made in collaboration with the perfume house Heretic Parfum [7].
Ownership
The company is privately held and, according to founder statements reported by Beauty Independent, self-funded and independent. Swift has said she declined outside investment, objecting that most investors "want a majority" [9]. No acquisition or ownership change is recorded in the available sources.
Philosophy and positioning
RMS Beauty frames its approach around multitasking essentials that nourish the skin while enhancing natural features, summarised in taglines such as "Clean Beauty, But Make It Effortless." The company sets out four stated principles: skin-loving clean ingredients, quality and transparency, a health-first mindset, and a sustainable future.
Ingredient transparency is central to how the brand describes itself. According to RMS Beauty, it discloses every ingredient it uses and excludes more than 2,700 ingredients from its formulas, against a US regulatory standard it puts at roughly 30 [6]. The company also states that it does not treat "natural" and "synthetic" as automatic markers of safety, arguing that what matters is the safety of a given ingredient for human health.
Products and innovation
The Living Luminizer is the product most closely tied to the brand's identity; Swift has called it her "calling card" and credited it with putting RMS Beauty on the map at a time when competing highlighters were, in her words, glittery rather than luminous [10]. The Un Cover-Up Concealer has been described as the brand's best seller for 15 years [10]. Other well-known items include Lip2Cheek, a cream product intended for lips, cheeks and eyes, and the Legendary Lip Oil.
The company's formulas centre on ingredients such as Kakadu Plum, which it describes as exceptionally high in vitamin C, and wildcrafted Buriti oil. It also markets several proprietary technologies, including GLOWPLEX, a peptide complex for radiance; TIGHTENYL, described as a biotechnology-derived alternative to retinol; and GEL2POWDER, a sugar-derived wet-powder texture.
Sustainability
RMS Beauty has framed sustainability as an incremental effort rather than a finished achievement, summarising its stance as "one step at a time is better than no steps." The 2021 refillable primer was the start of a wider move toward refillable packaging, which the company says has cut plastic use for some products. It reports transitioning packaging to glass, post-consumer recycled plastic and aluminium, using cartons made from at least 80% recycled paper, and taking part in the PACT Collective packaging-recycling programme. The brand states that it is certified cruelty-free through PETA's Beauty Without Bunnies programme and does not test on animals [4].
Recognition and press
Beyond the 2019 Beauty Independent profile, RMS Beauty has been covered by trade and editorial outlets. TheIndustry.beauty published an interview framing Swift as a "rebel" and clean-beauty pioneer, and The Good Trade ran a review testing the products on a 38-year-old and a 65-year-old, singling out the Un Cover-Up Concealer for praise. The line is stocked through retailers including Sephora, Nordstrom, Bluemercury and Space NK, and it has a notable presence with Japanese retailers.
Current status
RMS Beauty is active. Its most recent documented activity is the 2024 launch of its skincare line and the Scarlet Moon fragrance collaboration, and it continues to sell through a multi-channel network spanning the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan and the Nordic market.
