Summary

Overview

Roja Parfums is an independent British luxury fragrance house based in Mayfair, London, founded in 2011 by the perfumer Roja Dove [1]. It specialises in perfume and eau de parfum, sold across a small network of department-store counters and boutiques worldwide, and positions itself at the upper end of the market. The company is owned by Roja Parfums Holdings Ltd [4]. Although its registered and canonical name is Roja Parfums, the brand currently markets itself to consumers as "ROJA London" [4].

The house remains active. Its 2025-2026 releases include Espresso Aoud and Elysium Noir, and in May 2026 the brand said it took over the Brompton Road windows at Harrods in London [5].

Origin and founder

The house is the venture of Roja Dove, a British perfumer born Roger Bird in Sussex in 1956 [9]. According to editorial accounts, his interest in fragrance began in childhood, traced to a Coty scent his mother wore. In 1981 he was recruited into Guerlain's training and public-relations department after repeatedly writing to the French house with questions about its historic perfumes; he stayed for close to twenty years and became its first ambassador from outside the founding family, a role for which he was known as "Professeur de Parfum." He left in 2001, when Guerlain passed into the hands of a larger corporation.

Dove began working under his own name soon after. He opened the Roja Dove Haute Parfumerie on the sixth floor of Harrods in 2004, a boutique he later called the "spiritual home" of the brand [9]. The eponymous product line, Roja Parfums, launched in 2011 with "H – The Exclusive Aoud," a fragrance made for Harrods. Because of these two dates, the brand's origin is sometimes given as 2004; the company itself dates the perfume house to 2011, treating the earlier Harrods boutique as a predecessor venture [3][9].

Philosophy and positioning

Roja Parfums describes itself as an independent house of "haute perfumery," and uses "Modern Haute Perfumery" as its principal tagline [2]. The company frames its products as objects of craft, saying its fragrances are "crafted like precious jewellery" and made in England [1]. Its stated values centre on being "brilliantly British," on what it calls uncompromising luxury, and on long-lasting compositions.

The founder's own stated philosophy runs through the brand's messaging. Dove has said he believes "everyone deserves to smell incredible" and that fragrance "connects us to ourselves" [1]. In interviews he has summarised his approach more bluntly: "if you are going to do anything, why not do it properly?"

Products and ingredients

The house works chiefly in high-concentration parfum and eau de parfum, organised into several collections including Art, Aoud, Prestige, Elysium and Isola, alongside a home range of candles. Among its best-known fragrances are Elysium Pour Homme, Amber Aoud and Aoud Extraordinaire; Roja Haute Luxe, launched in 2013, is described as the most expensive fragrance in the line [13]. The Aoud collection reflects a particular association: the brand presents itself as a house recognised for its handling of oud, the resinous agarwood note long used in Middle Eastern perfumery.

According to the company and retail sources, the fragrances are built from costly natural materials such as oud, Taif rose, Grasse rose and jasmine, Mysore sandalwood and ambergris. One editorial profile reports that the Grasse rose alone requires roughly 308,000 flowers to yield a single kilogram of material, harvested before noon in May. Bottles are presented as part of the product, with the brand citing crystal-adorned flacons and gold-finished caps.

The company states that its fragrances are vegan and cruelty-free, and that it uses recyclable packaging and sustainable sourcing. In September 2024 it received Butterfly Mark accreditation from Positive Luxury, an assessment the brand links to those clean-formulation and sustainability practices [1].

Recognition

Roja Dove has been the subject of press profiles over two decades. The Financial Times described him in 2004 as a "Genius With A Bottle," The New York Times in 2016 as "a Master Tailor (of Scent)," and British GQ in 2017 as "the man who made a career out of smelling superb" [9]. Some retailers and publications have gone further, calling him the "world's greatest nose" and describing Roja Parfums as the most luxurious perfume house in the world; these are promotional or press characterisations rather than independently verifiable facts [11]. The 2011 Harrods launch of "H – The Exclusive Aoud" sold out within days and is reported as the most successful launch in the store's history [9].

Current status

The company is an actively trading fragrance house. It runs its own e-commerce site, has continued to release new fragrances into 2025 and 2026, and is sold through boutiques and department-store counters in Europe, North America, the Middle East, Southeast Asia and Australia, including London, Paris, New York, Dubai, Doha, Riyadh, Rome, Munich, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Sydney [6]. Its most recent publicised activity, in May 2026, was a window takeover at Harrods.
