Overview
Rosebud, formally the Rosebud Perfume Company, Inc., is an American maker of lip balms and all-purpose skin salves based in Woodsboro, Maryland. The company grew out of a rose-scented salve created by a local druggist, Dr. George F. Smith, first sold as "Smith's Balsam of Rosebuds" and later renamed Rosebud Salve. The company's own history places its founding in 1895 [3], though a 2018 Maryland state business feature dates it to 1892 [7]; Rosebud itself treats 1895 as its starting point and marked a 130th anniversary in 2025 [5].
More than a century later, the business remains small and family-owned, operating from the same Maryland town. It sells a range of tinned and tubed lip balms alongside its original salve, and its products reach international markets and retail chains including Sephora [7].
Origin and founders
Dr. George F. Smith was born near Woodsboro in 1865 and taught school for several years before entering the drug and medicine trade; he was registered by the Maryland Board of Pharmacy in 1902. According to the company, he formulated his salve after friends and customers asked him to prepare an all-purpose family product for minor skin complaints [2]. He began in a small drugstore across the street from what is now the "Rosebud Building," a former hotel that Smith later bought and that has housed the company's operations for over a century.
In its early decades Rosebud built an unusual mail-order operation. The company says it once employed more than 70,000 door-to-door agents to sell its salves and perfumes, which at various times included Rosebud Perfume and a Vivian Perfume named for a family member [3].
History and milestones
The company associates its heritage with a "Trade R.P.CO. Mark" dating to 1914. A second long-running product began life under the name "Tholene," which received patent protection in 1927 [5]; it was later sold as Smith's Mentholated Salve and, today, as Smith's Menthol Eucalyptus Balm. In 2025 the company marked its 130th year with a campaign that included reissued vintage-style tins of that mentholated salve, offered as collectibles [5].
Products
Rosebud's cornerstone product is Rosebud Salve. Refinery29 described it as a simple preparation of cottonseed oil in a petrolatum base, carrying the soft, sweet rose scent from which it takes its name [6]. The company markets it for everyday uses such as chapped lips, dry cuticles and minor irritations.
Around that original salve, Rosebud sells a series of flavored and scented lip balms — among them Strawberry, Brambleberry Rose, Minted Rose, Mocha Rose and a tropical coconut-and-mango balm. These come in tins holding about 0.8 ounces and in tubes holding about 0.5 ounces, formats the company treats as, respectively, its classic and newer styles.
Ownership
Rosebud has stayed in the founder's family across generations. Company materials identify Vivian Smith Pruitt Clipp, a granddaughter of Dr. Smith, as president, while the 2018 Maryland feature named great-granddaughter Linda Pruitt-Michielli as vice president [7]. No outside ownership or acquisition is recorded.
Philosophy and positioning
The company attributes its longevity to "selling quality products at reasonable prices for well over 100 years" [3], and presents itself as an apothecary-style heritage brand centered on affordable, multi-purpose skin care rather than a broad cosmetics line.
Recognition
Rosebud Salve has drawn press attention as a long-lived apothecary product with a wide following. In 2018 Refinery29 profiled its history under a headline asking where the ubiquitous salve had come from, describing it as an apothecary-style "must-have" with a loyal following spanning more than a century [6]. The same year, a Maryland state business feature covered the company's efforts to stay relevant by drawing on its history [7], and the Frederick News-Post has written about the salve as a seasonal local favorite.
Current status
Rosebud remains active. Alongside its 2025 anniversary campaign, it maintains a current online catalog and active social media channels. Its distribution extends beyond the United States to markets in Europe, Asia, Australia and South Africa [7].
