Summary

Overview

S.T. Dupont is a French luxury maison founded in Paris in 1872 by Simon Tissot-Dupont [2]. It began as a leather workshop and grew into a house known chiefly for lighters, writing instruments and leather goods; since 1998 it has also sold fragrances, produced under license by Interparfums [4]. The company is headquartered in Paris and manufactures at Faverges, in the Haute-Savoie region of the French Alps. It has been a wholly owned subsidiary of the Hong Kong group Dickson Concepts since 1987.

Within beauty, S.T. Dupont is represented by its fragrance line. Its wider catalogue of lighters, pens and leather accessories falls outside that field: the maison's own store lists those categories rather than perfume [1], while Wikipedia records perfumes among the products commercialised under the name [4].

Origin and founders

The house traces its start to 1872, when Simon Tissot-Dupont, then aged 25, opened his first leatherwork shop in Paris. According to the company, he began by making personalised leather travel trunks for European nobility. That trunk-making craft became the maison's founding trade, and it still frames how S.T. Dupont describes its heritage.

History and milestones

Over the twentieth century the workshop moved from luggage into small luxury objects. In 1941 the company produced what it calls the world's first luxury lighter; that first serially produced model was made of aluminium, because brass had been restricted as a strategic wartime metal [4]. The lighters drew a clientele that the brand documents through several figures: Audrey Hepburn was an early buyer of its Riviera handbag in 1953, and in 1962 Pablo Picasso decorated S.T. Dupont lighters with his own sketches, an episode the company records as its first collaboration [2].

Writing instruments followed. In 1973, the company says, its craftsmen created the Classique, described as its first luxury ballpoint pen, at the request of Jackie Kennedy Onassis, who wanted a pen to match an engraved S.T. Dupont lighter. The fragrance chapter opened much later: in 1998 the maison launched its first two scents, Pour Homme and Pour Femme [7]. In 2022 the company marked 150 years since its founding.

Ownership

S.T. Dupont has changed hands more than once. In 1971 the American company Gillette bought 48 percent of its stock [4]. In 1987 the business was sold to Dickson Concepts, a Hong Kong retailer of fashion, watches and jewellery, and it remains a wholly owned subsidiary of that group [4].

Products and innovation

The maison's core output sits outside beauty: lighters, fountain pens and ballpoints, leather goods and accessories such as cufflinks and cigar cases [1]. Its manufacturing is concentrated at Faverges, in Haute-Savoie, in a workshop established in 1924 beside Lake Annecy [3]. The company frames its craft around three trades: trunk-making, goldsmithing, and lacquer work using Chinese-lacquer techniques it says were introduced in 1935 by Georges Novossiltzeff, from which it developed its own lacquer formulations.

The fragrances are handled separately. Since 1998 the perfume line has been produced under license by Interparfums, and it now spans a broad range of scents; the fragrance database Wikiparfum lists 26. The two original 1998 releases were composed by named perfumers — Pour Homme by Gérard Anthony and Pour Femme by Bertrand Duchaufour. Pour Homme is classed as a spicy-woody fragrance, with coriander, cardamom and pepper at the top and a base of heliotrope, musk, gaiac wood and amber, according to Interparfums [6]. Later additions include Be Exceptional and, more recently, Vanilla & Leather, an oriental-gourmand scent presented as part of a Luxury collection [9].

Philosophy and positioning

S.T. Dupont positions itself as a heritage house built on hand-craftsmanship and longevity. In its own words, it has "been synonymous with luxury – combining creativity, uncompromising quality and unique expertise passed down from generation to generation" [3]. The maison sits in the luxury price tier and uses the tagline "the brand behind kings, queens, and shapers of time".

Current status

S.T. Dupont remains active. Its fragrance line continues within the Interparfums portfolio, with recent launches such as Vanilla & Leather [9], and in 2024 the brand worked with the fashion label Casablanca on a tennis-inspired collection.
