Summary

Overview

Salthouse is a German skincare brand built around minerals from the Dead Sea. It is owned by Murnauer Markenvertrieb GmbH, a cosmetics distributor based in Egelsbach, near Frankfurt, and its products are sold mainly through drugstores in the German-speaking market [7][3]. Despite the Middle Eastern reference in its concept, the company itself is German; the Dead Sea features as the source of its raw ingredients rather than as a place of origin.

The brand styles its name as one word, "SALTHOUSE"; some retailers list it as two words, "Salt House". Its stated aim, in the company's words, is "to support people in caring for their problematic, deficient skin or skin in need of care — for a relaxed and healthy skin feeling," and it markets itself under the tagline "For your healthy skin balance."

Origin

No source gives an exact founding year for Salthouse, but its history is consistently placed in the 1970s. The company says Dead Sea minerals have been used in its skincare since that decade [1], and the Austrian review site productreport.at reports that Salthouse formulations have been developed with dermatologists "for over forty years" [8]. The brand is a property of Murnauer Markenvertrieb GmbH, a Germany-based company that distributes several cosmetics brands and whose managing directors are listed as Alexander Kolb and Tilo Beerbaum [3][7].

Philosophy and positioning

Salthouse frames its whole range around the mineral content of the Dead Sea, which it describes as one of the richest natural mineral sources in the world. The company points to a salt concentration roughly ten times higher than other seas and to magnesium levels far above those of the Mediterranean, alongside potassium, calcium and bromine. According to the brand, Dead Sea salt binds moisture in the skin and helps support the skin's protective barrier.

The parent company frames the mission as making "the healing power of the Dead Sea accessible to everyone" through mineral research and modern cosmetic formulation [7]. In practice the positioning leans toward sensitive, dry and problematic skin rather than general cosmetics; the products are presented as "harmonised products for the cleansing and care of sensitive, dry and deficient skin."

Products

The Salthouse range runs to roughly thirty products, grouped into bathing salts, body care, facial care, foot care, hair and scalp care, hand care and shower care. Signature items include the Original Dead Sea Bath Salts, a Hyaluronic Face Cream 24h, and an Anti-Dandruff Shampoo made with Dead Sea minerals. Beyond Dead Sea salt itself, formulations draw on ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and urea, the latter appearing in a "Urea Repair 10%" cream and body milk aimed at very dry skin.

The parent company also lists related lines under the Salthouse name, including a "Totes Meer Therapie" (Dead Sea Therapy) line for dry and problematic skin and a men's line, "Salthouse Totes Meer MEN".

Ethics and formulation

The company states that the majority of Salthouse products are vegan and that no animal testing is carried out for the brand [5]. Individual products are described as free from ingredients such as colourants, mineral oils, paraffins, PEG, silicones and sodium laureth sulphate, listed per product rather than as a single blanket claim; the review site productreport.at similarly reports formulations "free from paraffins, parabens, silicones and dyes" [8]. Salthouse says product skin compatibility is dermatologically tested before market launch.

Science and claims

Salthouse presents its products as dermatologically confirmed and "very well tolerated by the skin". The company goes further with one positioning claim that is unusual for a drugstore skincare brand: that its products "can be used as an adjuvant therapy for skin types with neurodermatitis or psoriasis" [4] — that is, as a supportive measure alongside medical treatment for those conditions. The range accordingly targets concerns including eczema, dandruff, itching, redness and aging skin, and the brand attributes anti-inflammatory and moisture-binding effects to Dead Sea salt.

Current status

Salthouse is an active brand. Its English and German websites are live, and the manufacturer's site carries product documentation dated as recently as February 2025 [10]. The range is distributed across German-speaking markets and appears in Nordic retail. The brand maintains social accounts under the handle @salthouse_de. It does not have a Wikipedia entry, which is common for drugstore and pharmacy-oriented mineral-care brands of this kind.
