Summary

Overview

Sanotint is an Italian hair-color brand owned by Cosval S.p.A., a family-run cosmetics group based in Arese, near Milan. The brand specializes in permanent and temporary hair dyes built around plant extracts and a reduced load of synthetic ingredients, and it is positioned for people with sensitive scalps or a history of reactions to conventional colorants. It remains active, sold through the parent company's own online shop as well as pharmacies, health stores and international retailers.

The brand's founding date is sometimes reported as 1972, but that year belongs to Cosval itself; the Sanotint line was launched separately in 1980 [1]. Some retailer and editorial snippets conflate the two [5], so both dates appear in circulation.

Thinner sourcing. The article relies largely on the brand's own statements (T2–T3). Glowpedia is seeking independent sources.

Origin

Cosval traces its beginnings to 1972, when Sergio Baerlocher began distributing Swiss cosmetics from Switzerland's Valais region in Italy. The company name is a fusion of "Cosmetics" and "Valley" [1]. In 1980, second-generation leader Carlo Baerlocher broadened the group's range and launched three new brands: Sanotint, the hair-care line Migliorin, and Cosval Supplements [1]. Sanotint was therefore a corporate line extension within an existing family business rather than an independent start-up.

History

By 1990, the Cosval Group — Sanotint included — had expanded into the Middle East and Northern Europe [1]. According to the company, its three core brands together grew to more than 200 products in the years that followed. Cosval also developed other lines over time, among them the skincare labels Locherber Milano and Erbal, with Sanotint remaining its dedicated hair-color brand.

Philosophy & positioning

Sanotint presents itself as a natural-based alternative to conventional hair dye. The company frames the category as one where, in its words, "many of the hair products currently on the market contain harmful ingredients," and describes its own approach as achieving color with minimal synthetic content [5]. In practice this means removing common irritants — ammonia, resorcinol, added metals, paraffin, silicones and formaldehyde — while relying on botanical extracts and vitamins. The brand emphasizes gentleness on hair and scalp alongside reliable coverage of gray hair.

Products & innovation

The range centers on two permanent dyes and a temporary color. Sanotint Classic is offered in 30 shades across black, brown, blonde and red families, and the company describes it as free of ammonia, added metals, paraffin, silicones, formaldehyde and resorcinol. Sanotint Sensitive is an ammonia-free formula that additionally omits p-phenylenediamine (PPD), a frequent trigger of dye allergies. A temporary option, Sanotint Reflex, rounds out the core lineup, and the brand also sells shampoos, conditioners, masks and styling products.

Formulas draw on extracts of golden millet, olive, birch and grape seed, together with biotin and calcium pantothenate (vitamin B5); the company singles out golden millet as rich in silicon, which it describes as protective for hair. Cosval says the products are vegan, nickel tested and made in Italy [3]. The Sensitive line is described as dermatologically tested with full coverage of white hair from the first application.

Two claims stand out in the brand's positioning. In editorial coverage, Sanotint states that the maximum share of synthetic pigment in its Classic dye is just 1% [5]. Separately, third-party allergy resource SkinSAFE reports the brand's assertion that Sanotint "contains the least amount of P-Phenylenediamine (PPD) of any permanent hair dye on the market today," and rates the colorant as 82% top-allergen free [6].

Recognition

Sanotint has received editorial coverage in the United States, including a brand feature in Flaunt Magazine describing it as Cosval Group's natural hair-care brand and its low-synthetic-pigment positioning [5]. No industry awards are documented in available sources.

Current status

The brand is active. Its products are sold with current pricing through Cosval's own online shop and a network of pharmacies, health stores and retailers, and it has drawn recent editorial attention tied to a push into the US market [5]. The most recent visible activity dates to 2026.
