Overview
Santaverde is a German, family-run natural cosmetics company founded by Sabine Beer, headquartered in Hamburg with its own aloe vera farm near Estepona in Andalusia, Spain. Its products are built around a single distinctive idea: replacing the water base of a typical cream or serum with fresh aloe vera juice from that farm, a principle the company sums up as "Wirkstoff statt Wasser" (active ingredient instead of water).
The brand dates its origin to 1986 [2], though its own history page records 1997 as the year products first reached the market [4]. It remains active, run as a family business for more than three decades, with roughly 30 employees split between the Hamburg base and the Andalusian finca.
Origin and founders
The company traces back to a personal experiment. In 1985 Sabine Beer and her husband Kurt bought an old finca near Estepona in Andalusia. Living there, Beer developed skin problems, and a neighbour suggested applying fresh aloe vera gel from his garden. After her skin improved, she began cultivating aloe vera organically on the property and researching how to turn the fresh plant into cosmetics.
Out of that came the formulation approach that still defines the brand: using untreated aloe vera juice as the primary ingredient in place of water. The company describes the work behind it as extensive pharmaceutical and biological research. Early operations ran from the couple's home before the business grew into its current form.
The founding date is recorded inconsistently across the company's own material. Its "über uns" page and several external sources give 1986, marking the brand's origin [2]; the dedicated history page instead cites 1997 as the year products launched commercially [4]. The finca purchase is separately dated to 1985 [4].
Philosophy and positioning
Santaverde positions itself as certified natural cosmetics with, in its own words, "authentic natural cosmetics with real efficacy — based on fresh aloe vera juice. Without compromises". The company presents itself as one of the early proponents of certified natural cosmetics in Germany, citing more than 30 years of operation. Its tagline is "Schönheit in ihrer reinsten Form" (beauty in its purest form).
Central to the positioning is the aloe vera itself. The plant, Aloe barbadensis Miller, is described by the company as containing more than 200 active substances, including vitamins, minerals, enzymes and amino acids; leaf gel is harvested by hand between September and January and processed without filtration.
Products
The range covers facial care — cleansing, toners, serums, day and night creams, eye care, exfoliation, anti-ageing and a men's line — alongside body care and pure aloe vera products, organised into lines such as Originals, Face Care, Body Care, Age Protect and Skin Refine. Beyond aloe vera, listed hero ingredients include hyaluronic acid, aloe vera blossom nectar and fermented, probiotic components.
Two products anchor the brand's public recognition. The Aloe Vera Gel Pur was rated "sehr gut" (very good) by the German consumer-test magazine ÖKO-TEST in September 2020 [5]. The Aloe Vera Creme medium was named test winner in a Stiftung Warentest comparison of ten moisturising creams [5]. The products are sold through health-food stores, organic shops, selected pharmacies, drugstores and perfumeries, as well as the brand's own online shop, which ships internationally.
Sustainability
Sustainability features heavily in the company's own account of itself; it states that this is "not a trend but a central part of our daily work". According to the brand, over 95 percent of its plant-based raw materials come from organic cultivation, supplemented by upcycled seed oils such as apricot kernel, grape seed and raspberry seed oil [3]. Packaging uses more than 40 percent post-consumer recycled material in its airless dispensers and tubes, a monomaterial design intended to aid recycling, and FSC-certified paper for boxes.
The company's products carry several third-party seals, including NATRUE certification for natural and organic cosmetics, the Vegan Society trademark and Leaping Bunny cruelty-free certification [2]. It also states that its formulas contain no synthetic additives, mineral oils or parabens.
Recognition
Recognition for Santaverde comes chiefly from German consumer-testing institutions rather than beauty press. In 2020 ÖKO-TEST awarded "sehr gut" ratings to both the Aloe Vera Gel Pur (09/2020) and the Cleansing Emulsion (10/2020) [5]. In its aloe vera gel comparison, ÖKO-TEST singled the company out as one of the few manufacturers that process the pulp of the aloe leaf into a direct juice [5]. Separately, Stiftung Warentest named the Aloe Vera Creme medium the winner of a moisturiser comparison.
