Summary

Overview

Sante Naturkosmetik is a German certified natural cosmetics brand based in Salzhemmendorf, Lower Saxony. It is one of the beauty labels within LOGOCOS Naturkosmetik, a natural-cosmetics group whose lineage traces to the naturopath Hans Hansel, and its range spans skincare, make-up and plant-based haircare sold mainly through drugstore and mass retail. The brand is often stylised as SANTE and should not be confused with unrelated companies of the same name.

Ownership of the group has changed hands twice in recent years: L'Oréal bought LOGOCOS in 2018 and then divested it to the investment firm CoBe Capital in 2023, returning it to independent ownership [6][7].

Origin & founders

Sante belongs to the wider LOGOCOS group, which grew out of the German organic movement of the 1970s. The founder, Hans Hansel, was a trained Heilpraktiker (naturopath) who brought a holistic outlook to skincare. In 1975 he opened ALRAUNE in Hannover, described as one of the first organic stores in Germany, and in 1978 he founded the company Lorien-Goods Naturkosmetik — later renamed LOGONA — together with two partners, out of dissatisfaction with the natural cosmetics then on the market [9].

The exact year the Sante brand itself was first marketed is not clearly documented. The group's owner, CoBe Capital, records the founding year as 1978, the origin of the LOGOCOS group to which Sante belongs [7]. A separate corporate registration for the legal entity "Sante Naturkosmetik GmbH" is dated 1993 by Bloomberg [10]. The 1978 date reflects the group's lineage rather than a verified debut of the Sante line.

History & milestones

The parent company's history is closely tied to the early German natural-cosmetics industry. After its 1978 founding, the business relocated to a historic water mill near Salzhemmendorf in the early 1980s, where it expanded production and cultivated its own herbs and plants. The LOGOCOS holding company was established in 1988, and in 2008 the firm became LOGOCOS Naturkosmetik AG. Over these decades the group also took part in shaping industry certification standards, including the BDIH and later NATRUE natural-cosmetics schemes.

Ownership

Sante's parent, LOGOCOS Naturkosmetik, has passed through two ownership changes in recent years. In 2018, L'Oréal acquired LOGOCOS Naturkosmetik AG — then the parent of Sante, Logona and Heliotrop — in a move announced on 1 August 2018 [6]. According to L'Oréal's reported figures, the group generated net sales of around 59 million euros in 2017 and employed roughly 340 people. In March 2023, L'Oréal divested the business to CoBe Capital, which carved it out as an independent company again; the acquisition was completed on 2 March 2023 [7]. Following that sale, the company again describes itself as an independent German firm with its own development and production.

Philosophy & positioning

Sante positions itself around natural cosmetics that favour authenticity over perfectionism. The company sums up its outlook as "Joy, powered by nature" and organises its messaging around principles it labels "Real Over Perfection" and "Nature. But. Better." — the idea, as the brand puts it, that care should "accompany rather than correct" [2]. Its stated mission is that "joy is the most beautiful thing you can wear," and it frames its approach as combining German research with plant-based active ingredients.

At the time of the 2018 acquisition, L'Oréal characterised the Sante line as covering haircare, skincare, hygiene and make-up and as "found mainly in mass retail at an accessible price for young and trendy consumers" [6]. That positioning — natural cosmetics at drugstore prices — remains central to how the brand is sold.

Products & innovation

The Sante range is organised into three main areas: face care, make-up and plant-based haircare. Recent products carried on its site include the C U Glowing Serum, the NAD + Boost Longevity Serum and the Wonder Wings Mascara, alongside cleansers, toners, creams and hair colours. Formulations draw on both botanical extracts and familiar actives such as AHA exfoliating acids, activated charcoal, organic jojoba oil, organic aloe vera, organic green tea extract, probiotics, glycerin and caffeine.

The company emphasises in-house ingredient work, stating that it produces more than 40 plant extracts in its own extraction facility, drawing on close to 40 years of experience. Its products are made in Germany at the group's facilities in Salzhemmendorf.

Sustainability

Sante presents its environmental work under a "care for you and the world" theme. The company says its formulations are predominantly vegan and exclude mineral-oil-based materials, synthetic preservatives, colorants and microplastics. On packaging, it reports moving to 100% recycled cardboard since 2020, along with rPET bottles and labels made partly from recycled plastic.

The brand's products carry recognised natural-cosmetics certifications, including NATRUE and BDIH, and the company states that manufacturing follows the strict guidelines of those schemes [4]. Some products additionally reference the COSMOS standard, at both its organic and natural tiers, and the brand notes the GREEN BRAND sustainability mark. Sante also describes LOGOCOS as one of the early proponents of these certification standards.
