The company states it was founded in 1974 by Derek Ross [6], and it remains family-owned and independent, with manufacturing based in central Scotland. It is an active business, still launching seasonal collections as of 2025.

The brand describes its work as blending natural ingredients with what it calls contemporary Scottish style to create bath and beauty collections. Nearly all production is kept in-house: the company says it manufactures 99.5% of its products at its own site in central Scotland.

According to a 2017 profile by the retailer beauty blog Bath & Unwind, the company was founded in Scotland in 1974 by Derek Ross and is now led by his son, Robert Ross, as Group Managing Director [6]. There is some ambiguity in the founding date. The company consistently presents itself as "Est. 1974" [1], and editorial coverage repeats that year. The United Kingdom's Companies House register, however, records the legal entity Scottish Fine Soaps Limited as incorporated on 28 September 1960 [7]. The 1960 date appears to reflect an earlier registered company later associated with the brand rather than the start of trading under the current identity; the brand-stated 1974 is used here as the founding year.

The company's operating base and factory are in Carronshore, near Falkirk, in central Scotland [3], with editorial coverage placing the factory in the Ochil Hills.
