Summary

Overview

Sebamed is a German medicinal skincare brand built around a single idea: that skin cleanses and stays healthiest at a slightly acidic pH of 5.5. It was founded in 1967 by the dermatological chemist Dr. Heinz Maurer, who brought the first soap-free cleansing bar to the German market [1][8]. The brand belongs to Sebapharma GmbH & Co. KG, a family-owned manufacturer based in Boppard, in Germany's Rhineland-Palatinate region.

The company remains active. It reports a range of 168 products sold in around 100 countries, and completed a rebrand in 2024. Leadership passed in 2010 from the founder to his son, Thomas Maurer.

Origin and founders

The starting point was a clinical observation. Dr. Heinz Maurer noticed that people with eczema could not tolerate ordinary soap, because alkaline soap strips the skin's acid mantle — the thin, slightly acidic film that protects the skin surface. His answer was a cleansing bar without soap, formulated at a pH of 5.5, so that patients with skin conditions could wash regularly without damaging that barrier. Maurer summed up his conviction bluntly: "People have been washing themselves incorrectly for 2,000 years."

The name arrived by accident. According to Wikipedia, Maurer originally intended to call the brand SEBUMED, but a clerical error at the patent office registered it as SEBAMED, and he chose to keep the corrected spelling [8].

The exact founding year has two versions. Sebamed's own history uses the line "Science for healthy skin since 1967," and dates both the brand name and the market launch of its cleansing bar to that year [3]. Wikipedia instead records the company as established in 1957 [8]. The brand's history page helps reconcile the two: it traces the pH 5.5 cleansing concept back further, to a "soap without soap" that went into production in 1956, and treats 1967 as the year the sebamed brand name and its flagship product reached the market [3]. In other words, the underlying invention predates the brand name.

History and milestones

After the cleansing bar, Sebamed extended the pH 5.5 idea across a wash range, launching a Liquid Face and Body Wash in 1970. International distribution began in 1971, and the products eventually reached more than 80 countries [8]. The sales company, Sebapharma GmbH & Co. KG, was established in 1983, and the business relocated to its Bad Salzig headquarters the following year.

By 2006 the range had grown to over 70 products across more than 80 countries. Thomas Maurer took over leadership from his father in 2010, and the company completed a rebranding in 2024 [3].

Ownership

Sebamed is the primary brand of Sebapharma GmbH & Co. KG, a German company that manufactures medicinal skincare. Sebapharma operates two other lines alongside it: tensimed, based on aloe vera, and TESTAmed, which covers diabetes-care diagnostics. The company reports 437 employees and five sites — its Boppard/Bad Salzig head office with research and development, production at Pfalzfeld and Norderstedt near Hamburg, and locations in Hong Kong and Shanghai. It states that all products are made in Germany.

Philosophy and positioning

Everything the brand makes is organised around the acid mantle. Human skin sits between roughly pH 4.5 and 6.0, and Sebamed formulates to 5.5 to match it, arguing that keeping cleansers and care products at this level supports the skin's protective barrier and the balance of its microbiome — the community of microorganisms living on the skin's surface. The company frames its purpose plainly: "At Sebapharma, we consider it our mission to promote human skin health."

That positioning is deliberately clinical rather than cosmetic. Sebamed describes its products as dermatologically and clinically tested, and says "400 studies prove skin compatibility." Its stated tagline is "Worldwide the right decision for healthy skin." The audience it addresses is people with sensitive or reactive skin, including conditions such as acne, eczema and rosacea [9].

Products and innovation

The signature product is the soap-free cleansing bar that started the brand. From there the portfolio has broadened into facial care, baby and child care, sun care, hair and body care, deodorants, and intimate hygiene. According to Wikipedia, Sebamed products have been included in over 150 scientific studies supporting the formulations [8], a figure the brand's own materials put at 400 studies.

Sustainability

Sebamed's sustainability messaging concentrates on packaging and materials rather than formal certifications; the company lists no specific certifications on its sustainability page. It says it switched to more environmentally friendly LDPE and HDPE packaging in 2013, and reports reducing plastic use by 13.8 tonnes a year since 2017 through redesigned jars and bottles. Replacing printed package leaflets with a QR code on each pack is described as saving the paper and ink for 7.6 million leaflets annually, roughly 335 tonnes of wood. The company organises these efforts under three headings — ecological, economic and social — and cites the efficient use of renewable raw materials and better recyclability among its priorities.

Recognition

Recognition has centred on the founder rather than the products. Dr. Heinz Maurer received the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1992 [3], and the Order of Merit of Rhineland-Palatinate in 2010 [8]. Wikipedia also records the University Medal "Bene merenti" from the University of Regensburg and an appearance at the World Congress of Dermatology in Paris in 2002.

Current status

Sebamed is an active, family-owned business. It has been led by Thomas Maurer since 2010, reports a current range of 168 products across around 100 countries, and completed a company rebrand in 2024.
