Summary

Overview

Sebastian Professional is an American professional haircare brand founded in Los Angeles by the stylist duo Geri Cusenza and her husband and business partner John Sebastian [5]. It began with the pair mixing their own products for salon clients, and grew into a styling-led range built around hairsprays, treatments and styling creams sold through salons. Since 1993 the brand has been part of the Wella group, and today it operates as one brand within the Wella Company portfolio rather than as an independent company [8].

The exact founding year is recorded inconsistently across the brand's own materials. Sebastian Professional's 2024 anniversary campaign, "50 Years of Limitless Self-Expression," implies a 1974 start [4]; a Wella Company press release and several editorial sources instead date the founding to 1972 [5]. An older brand page has separately carried a 1964 header, which the same page contradicts through its 50th-anniversary claim. This article follows the 1974 date implied by the brand's own anniversary math while noting 1972 as the leading alternative.

Origin and founders

The company was started by Geri Cusenza and John Sebastian, a Los Angeles stylist couple who, according to Wella Company, were "determined to push things further and take a generation from flower power to fearless hair fashion." Cusenza is also credited by the company with inventing a modern crimping iron that was popularised by Barbra Streisand in the early 1970s. The brand traces its identity to this salon-floor origin, describing itself as a professional-focused label built on artistry and self-expression.

History and milestones

Much of Sebastian Professional's history is told through product launches aimed at stylists. The company dates its 2+1 Professional Reconstructor, a formula it describes as "2 parts moisture and 1 part protein," to 1974. In 1976 it launched what it calls its first stylist education video, and it points to further education milestones including early web-based courses in 2001.

Several of its styling products became long-running fixtures. Shpritz, introduced in 1979, was described by the company as capturing hair design in a resin-charged pump spray. Shaper hairspray followed in 1984, promoted as the first hairspray that could be sprayed upside down. In 1990 the brand launched Potion 9, a botanical cream-gel it credits with creating a "wearable treatments" category. The Dark Oil line, a lightweight hair oil later extended into shampoo, conditioner and mask, arrived in 2016.

Ownership

Sebastian Professional's corporate ownership has changed hands repeatedly as part of larger haircare deals. Wella acquired the US-based Sebastian International in 1993, bringing the brand into the Wella portfolio [8]. In 2003, Procter & Gamble acquired a majority stake in Wella for approximately US$5.7 billion [6]. Coty Inc. then acquired Wella in 2015 as part of a US$12.5 billion deal involving Procter & Gamble's specialty beauty business [6]. In 2021, the private-equity firm KKR took a majority stake in the Wella Company [6], which has since operated as an independent entity majority-owned by KKR. Within that group, Sebastian Professional sits alongside brands such as Wella Professionals, ghd, OPI, Nioxin, Clairol and Briogeo.

Philosophy and positioning

Sebastian Professional positions itself as a salon-first brand that treats hair as a medium of identity and self-expression. Its stated mission is organised around four pillars — "Hair is identity," "Hair is artistry," "Hair is evolving," and "Hair is Sebastian" — and the company summarises its values as artistry, self-expression and individuality. The brand's tagline is "Get the look. Shape your world.," and its products are marketed as "created with stylists, for all," designed to be mixed and layered for custom styling.

Products and innovation

The range is entirely haircare, spanning shampoos, conditioners, treatments, hairsprays, styling oils, creams, waxes and colour products. Recurring collections include Dark Oil, No Breaker, Potion 9, Penetraitt, Drench, Twisted and Volupt, each aimed at a specific styling or care need. Botanical extracts feature in the brand's messaging, with the Potion 9 collection built around what it describes as nine plant botanicals. On the technical side, the company highlights its 2+1 reconstructor concept and its Cellophanes colour line.

Recognition

Editorial coverage of the brand has centred on its Shaper hairspray. The review site Luxury Beauty Reviews described the Shaper Plus version as "a cult-classic professional hairspray" and "a heritage salon icon" with a "decades-long salon pedigree" [7], attributing its longevity to a balance of hold, movement and humidity resistance that has kept stylists and long-term users with the product.

Current status

Sebastian Professional is an active, globally distributed brand, but it operates as a submark within the Wella Company rather than as an independent business, and is classified here as acquired. In 2025 and 2026 the brand began a global relaunch: Wella Company announced a "major brand restage" with a new digital presence rolling out in EMEA markets from September 2025, US packaging changes from January 2026, and new products and in-salon services in early 2026 [5].
