Summary

Overview

Sibel is a Belgian professional beauty brand that supplies tools, accessories, equipment and furniture to hairdressers and beauticians. It is based in Ronse, in East Flanders, and operates as one of the house brands of Sinelco International, the wholesaler that owns and distributes it. Since 2009 the parent company has been owned by the American group Sally Beauty Holdings, which acquired Sinelco in a cash deal reported at roughly $37 million [6][7].

The brand dates its own beginnings to 1964, describing itself as "a go-to for hairdressers and beauticians" since that year [1]. The wider corporate story runs further back: the company that would eventually operate Sibel was founded in 1943, and both dates appear in the group's own account of its history [3]. Because Sibel is a professional supply brand sold through salon distributors rather than a consumer label, its public presence is deliberately spare — a landing page and a downloadable catalogue — with the fuller record kept on the parent company's site.

Origin and founders

The line traces back to 1943, when a Belgian family man, Albert Denhaerynck, set up a workshop in Ronse to make hairnets alongside his wife and children. The small operation grew in the years after the Second World War, moving in 1952 to a larger factory in nearby Oudenaarde as production widened.

The turning point for the brand itself came in 1964. As the range expanded into combs and salon capes, the company introduced the Sibel name and reorganised under the title Prosibel. From that point Sibel served as an umbrella for a growing catalogue of hairdressing and beauty supplies aimed squarely at professionals.

History and milestones

Through the second half of the twentieth century the business moved from a family manufacturer into an international wholesaler. In 1997 Prosibel took over its largest French competitor, Nelson, and launched the Bob Tuo brand; the combined company was renamed Sinelco International [3]. Sibel continued as one of the group's exclusive labels alongside Ultron and, later, other house brands.

The most significant change of ownership came in December 2009, when Sinelco Group was acquired by Sally Beauty Holdings. Trade coverage of the deal put its value at about $37 million, or €25.5 million, and noted that Sinelco at the time served more than 1,500 professional customers across 35 countries, with sales offices in Belgium, France and Italy [6][7]. Roughly 85 percent of Sinelco's revenue was reported to come from its exclusive-label brands — Sibel, Ultron and Bob Tuo.

Ownership

Sibel is owned, through Sinelco International, by Sally Beauty Holdings Inc., a United States company listed on the New York Stock Exchange. The acquisition of Sinelco Group closed on 17 December 2009 [6]. At the announcement, a Sally Beauty vice president framed the purchase as a way to reach professional distributors in markets where the group lacked a physical presence. Within the Sinelco portfolio, Sibel sits beside sister brands including Ultron, Bob Tuo, Original Best Buy and Barburys.

Philosophy and positioning

Sibel presents itself as a partner to hair and beauty professionals rather than as a consumer brand. According to the company, a career in the trade is "founded in real experience and knowledge," and its stated aim is to be a partner professionals can trust for "timeless quality and creative inspiration" [1]. The parent group frames the underlying goal in commercial terms: to become a leading producer of hardware, accessories and specialities for the professional market by building reliable brands with a strong price-to-quality ratio.

That positioning is reflected in how the brand describes its audience — serving both large salons and small beauty institutes. Its catalogue tagline, "professional quality tools for the hair and beauty specialist," sums up the intended market.

Products and innovation

Sibel's range spans several areas of salon work. Alongside professional hair and beauty products and nail formulas, the company says it focuses on ergonomic equipment and salon furniture built to withstand frequent use. Named lines include Hair Sculptor, a set of coloured volumising hair fibres for thinning hair, and Épil'Hair Pro, a waxing range with heaters, spatulas and strips for various skin types. A Green Tea hair-care line uses green tea extract, which the brand describes as rich in antioxidants that nourish the scalp and hair. A separate consumables range, Clean All, covers everyday salon supplies such as latex gloves, hand towels and cotton wool.

The brand's categories cluster around haircare, salon accessories and nails, and it also markets electric hairdressing equipment — dryers, clippers and irons — under a shared label with its sister brand Ultron. Nail care is described as a particular specialty, with products aimed at professional nail stylists.

Current status

Sibel remains an active brand under Sinelco International and, above it, Sally Beauty Holdings [6]. It is not an independent company: it has operated as a house brand since long before the 2009 acquisition and continues to be sold through professional wholesale channels rather than direct to consumers. The parent group has described itself as active in more than 60 countries with a catalogue of over 4,800 products — a wider figure than the 35 countries reported at the time of the 2009 acquisition, reflecting growth over the intervening years rather than a contested count [3][6]. The most recent public sign of activity is an updated English-language product catalogue uploaded to the brand's site in March 2024.
