Summary

Overview

Simply Zen is an Italian salon-professional haircare brand built around a natural and holistic approach to the scalp, hair and body. It is one of three haircare lines developed by Z.One Concept, the Turate-based company founded in 1999 by Ivano Panzeri, and sits alongside the company's better-known milk_shake and No Inhibition brands [10]. The line pairs plant-derived ingredients with salon technology, and frames its formulas around wellbeing rather than a single cosmetic result, using the tagline "when nature inspires beauty".

The brand remains active and is maintained across five languages on the Z.One Concept site, with recent product reformulations and ongoing sustainability campaigns. Since 2020 it has formed part of Beautynova Group, an Italian professional-haircare holding company backed by Bluegem Capital Partners [8].

Origin and ownership

Simply Zen is a sub-brand rather than an independent company, and its own launch year is not documented in available sources; the parent business, Z.One Concept, was created in 1999 in Italy by Ivano Panzeri, who set out to give hairstylists a more technology-led approach to their work [10]. The company is based in Turate, in the province of Como, and its products are manufactured in Italy under the corporate entity BeautyNova SPA.

In 2020, Z.One Concept was consolidated into Beautynova Group, a holding company assembled from 2012 onward through the acquisition of several professional haircare brands and backed by the investment firm Bluegem Capital Partners [8]. Under that umbrella Simply Zen shares ownership with milk_shake — described in trade coverage as accounting for over half of the group's revenue — as well as No Inhibition, Depot and Medavita. According to the group, Beautynova generates about 75 percent of its revenue outside Italy and exports to more than 70 countries [8].

Philosophy and positioning

Simply Zen positions itself as a natural and holistic line, combining what the company calls "naturally-sourced ingredients embodied within next generation technology, striving for sustainable wellbeing" [1]. The brand organises its identity around three stated values: wellbeing and beauty, efficacy and nature, and essentiality and transparency, the last expressed through a clean, minimal packaging aesthetic. Its formulas are described as free from parabens and from the surfactants SLS and SLES, favouring plant extracts, essential oils and botanical complexes [9].

The line is sold chiefly through salons rather than mass retail. Distribution follows a professional model supported by a salon locator and training programmes, and the brand offers professional salon equipment such as a dermo-trichological lens, an oxygen device and a scalp-analysis microscope alongside its retail products.

Products

Simply Zen is built as a system of specialised ranges — around fifteen in total — each aimed at a particular scalp or hair concern, from the Calming and Equilibrium lines to Densifying, Dandruff and Age Benefit & Moisturizing. Recurring hero ingredients across the ranges include camellia oil, organic rice water, cotton seed oil and avocado oil.

Several ranges anchor the line. The Detoxifying range targets scalps under stress and was reformulated to be 100 percent vegan, with the company citing plant-based ingredients such as dandelion and eucalyptus extract [11]. The Smooth & Care lotion is presented around water efficiency: the company says its "ultra-light formula and innovative rinsing technology" let users "save up to 0.5 litres with each use" [6]. The Herbarius Dyes range offers powdered plant dyes — one version fully plant-derived, another combining plant powders with added pigments — intended to colour hair and blend greys gently. Limited editions have included Restructure In, enriched with nigella oil, and a densifying "Sea the Future" kit using a biotechnological seaweed concentrate to address hair loss and greying [3].

Sustainability

Environmental messaging is central to how Simply Zen presents itself. The brand states that its production uses renewable energy and recyclable bottles and packaging. Its "Rooting for You — Sea the Future" campaign supports Marevivo's REPLANT initiative for restoring and repopulating seabeds, with seaweed used as the campaign emblem [3]. A separate "Waterfull" campaign is tied to a partnership with WAMI, described as an Italian B-corp founded in 2016 whose aim is to widen access to clean drinking water [6]. The brand has also run a "Rooting for You" reforestation effort to plant 500 pine trees in Val di Fiemme, an area affected by a 2018 natural disaster [9].

Current status

Simply Zen is an active brand. It is maintained on the Z.One Concept website in English, Italian, Spanish, French and German, and its ranges continue to be updated, including the reformulation of the Detoxifying line to a fully vegan standard [11]. The most recent documented corporate activity is the appointment of Cory Couts as president of Z.One Concept North America on 30 January 2024, reporting to Beautynova's chief executive [8].
