Summary

Overview

Skandinavisk is a Danish home and body fragrance company founded in Copenhagen in 2012 [1]. It builds scented candles, diffusers, body care and eau de parfum around the landscapes, moods and values of Scandinavia, and remains active, selling both directly to consumers and through wholesale partners including Selfridges and Sephora in the United Kingdom [9].

The company was started by Shaun Russell, an Englishman who had spent around two decades travelling and living in the Nordic region before settling in Denmark. Its collections carry Nordic names such as SKOG, HAV, HYGGE, FJORD and ARKTIS, each tied to a place or feeling, and its stated aim is to capture what it considers precious about Scandinavian life through scent.

Origin & founders

Skandinavisk was started in Copenhagen in 2012 by Shaun Russell, who by his own account had spent about twenty years travelling in and living across Scandinavia. In a founder interview he described the region's appeal simply: "It kind of gets into your blood" [9]. According to the company, Russell was joined by a fellow English emigrant and self-described Scandiphile, Gerry, and the two set out to combine "scents, Scandinavia and sustainability in one beautifully designed collection for body and home" [1]. One editorial account of the founding adds a Danish designer to the early creative team alongside the two Britons [11]; the company's own telling names Russell and Gerry.

The brand began with candles. Trade and editorial accounts describe an initial run of unscented candles, with scented versions following within roughly six months, and an early trio of scents — SKOG (forest), HAV (ocean) and HYGGE — chosen to stand in for the essence of Scandinavian life.

History & milestones

From candles, Skandinavisk expanded into diffusers and then into bath and body care, a sequence Russell has attributed to candles and diffusers being the largest home-fragrance categories globally. In 2019 the company became a Certified B Corporation, a designation for businesses audited against social and environmental standards; Russell has called the process "one of the hardest things we've ever done" [9]. At its 2023 recertification the company reported a score improvement of more than thirty points, and in March 2023 it published a database it calls the "B Beauty Navigator" [4].

More recent activity has included brand collaborations. In 2024 Skandinavisk worked with Scandinavian Airlines on a special-edition ARKTIS candle marking the 70th anniversary of the airline's polar route, sold through the carrier's loyalty shop [8]. It has also produced a bespoke fragrance for Bang & Olufsen's centenary.

Philosophy & positioning

Skandinavisk frames its work as translating Scandinavia's places and values into fragrance, under the tagline "Fragrances for a more balanced life." Russell has said the idea grew from a view that "the secret of Scandinavia is in balance — in the balance with nature" [9]. The company emphasises values it lists as community, consciousness, trust, equality, respect and life balance, together with what it calls "everyday moments of shared happiness." One editorial profile summarised the brand as "a conduit for communicating what makes Scandinavia special" — respect for nature, everyday happiness and work-life balance [10].

Products are organised around Scandinavian landscapes and moods, with names such as AURORA, STUGA, ØY, RO and KOTO. The company describes its approach to scent development as a mix of "artistry and chemistry," carried out by a team it characterises as an Englishman, a French perfumer and a Danish gardener who conduct "scent tours" of the region.

Products & sustainability

The range spans home fragrance — scented candles, diffusers, refills and home mist — and body care including wash, lotion, hand cream and hair care, alongside an eau de parfum line. Sustainability claims sit at the centre of the company's positioning. It states that its candle wax is made from Swedish rapeseed oil and that "2 trees are planted for every 1 felled" from managed Swedish forests [3]. The company also says its entire collection is vegan and not tested on animals, and that its personal-care line uses higher dosages of certified organic ingredients. Packaging measures it cites include post-consumer recycled aluminium hand-cream tubes, recyclable-plastic pump bottles and FSC-certified card, along with refills for candles, diffusers and a wash.

Sources differ on where products are made. The company's sustainability page states that "our entire personal care collection is made in Sweden," with packaging produced in Denmark [3]. An earlier editorial profile instead reports that the perfume is produced in Grasse, France, with hand and body care made in Denmark and Sweden [10] — accounts that may both hold if the eau de parfum oil is sourced from Grasse while the personal-care collection is filled in Sweden.

Recognition & distribution

Skandinavisk operates through both direct-to-consumer sales and wholesale, and its founder has cited distribution as a central difficulty in building the business. Its wholesale partners have included Selfridges and Sephora in the United Kingdom [9]. The company is a founding member of the B Corp Beauty Coalition, and describes holding the chair of the coalition's supervisory board [4].

Current status

Skandinavisk is active. Its most recent visible activity includes an autumn/winter 2025 lookbook, the 2024 Scandinavian Airlines and Bang & Olufsen collaborations, its 2023 B Corp recertification, and continuing direct and wholesale distribution across multiple markets.
