Summary

Overview

Skyn ICELAND is an American skincare brand built around the connection between stress and skin. Founded by Sarah Kugelman, a New York City-based beauty-industry veteran, it makes vegan, cruelty-free products that draw on ingredients sourced from Iceland. Sources disagree on the exact founding year: Cosmetics Business dates it to 2003 [8], while the acquiring distributor Amerikas and an earlier launch reference both place it in 2005 [9]. Despite the "ICELAND" in its name, the company is US-based; Iceland functions as the brand's ingredient source and creative inspiration rather than its corporate home.

The brand has changed hands twice in recent years. In October 2024 it was acquired by the US beauty distributor Amerikas [8], and it remains actively sold, with a live direct-to-consumer store and distribution in the United States and United Kingdom.

Origin & founders

Skyn ICELAND grew out of a personal health crisis. According to a CBS News feature, founder Sarah Kugelman was warned by a physician in 1995 that she "won't live to see 40" if she did not learn to manage her stress [7]. The strain of heavy travel, overwork and a divorce had, by her account, worn down her immune system and left her with cystic acne and a grayish complexion. Kugelman was not new to the industry: she had previously built the beauty venture Gloss.com, which she sold in 2000 [7].

That experience shaped the brand's premise. As Kugelman told CBS News, "there is a direct correlation between certain skin conditions and stress hormones, such as cortisol" [7]. She turned to ingredients she admired from Iceland — describing "the purity, the amazing plants grown there" — to build a skincare line aimed at stressed, sensitive skin.

History & milestones

The brand launched in the mid-2000s, though the precise year is contested (see above). It then passed through a sequence of owners. In 2022, entrepreneur Antoine de Larocque acquired the company with backing from investor Jacques Veyrat via the holding company Impala [8]. Two years later, in October 2024, it was bought by Amerikas, a US beauty-products distributor, for an undisclosed sum [8].

Ownership

Skyn ICELAND's current parent is Amerikas, which completed its acquisition in October 2024 [8]. Amerikas has described plans to expand the brand's US presence through omnichannel distribution, including Amazon and TikTok Shop, and framed the acquisition as an effort to return the brand "to its Nordic roots" [9]. Founder Sarah Kugelman is no longer with the company.

Philosophy & positioning

The brand's central idea is that chronic stress damages the skin, so its products target the visible effects of that stress. Skyn ICELAND describes its mission as combating "the visible effects of stress on the skin" [9], and its philosophy pairs Icelandic-sourced ingredients — valued, the company says, for their ability to "flourish in extreme conditions" — with what it calls scientifically advanced actives. A brand page framed around psychodermatology, the study of how emotions affect the skin, argues that stress "weakens the skin's ability to heal, defend itself, and stay balanced."

Positioned within clean-beauty and Nordic-beauty trends, the brand states that all of its products are cruelty-free, vegan, dermatologist-tested and free from parabens, petroleum, mineral oil, chemical sulfates and phthalates. Its retail pricing places it in the prestige tier.

Products & innovation

Skyn ICELAND's range is skincare-focused, spanning eye care, moisturizers, cleansers, patches and peels. Among its signature items are the Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels, Dissolving Microneedle Eye Patches, Glacial Face Wash, Antidote Cooling Daily Lotion and Nordic Skin Peel.

The formulas lean on ingredients the brand ties to the Arctic environment, including Icelandic glacial water, Arctic cloudberry and cranberry seed oils, Icelandic moss, Angelica Archangelica, Arctic thyme, Icelandic kelp and Siberian ginseng. The company says its glacial water flows from a government-protected spring in the lava fields of Heiðmörk, a nature reserve near Reykjavík, filtered over centuries through layers of lava rock. Amerikas has also referred to a proprietary "Icelandic Complex" blending glacial water, Arctic berries and oxygen-rich botanicals [9].

Recognition & press

The brand and its founder have drawn press coverage. CBS News profiled Kugelman and the stress-driven origin of the company [7], and WWD covered the 2024 Amerikas acquisition [10].

Current status

Skyn ICELAND is an operating brand under new ownership. Following its October 2024 acquisition by Amerikas [8], it continues to be sold internationally through a live direct-to-consumer site and select retailers in the US and UK, with the new owner pursuing a relaunch via Amazon and TikTok Shop.
