Summary

Overview

SPORT LAVIT is a German sports body-care brand that makes cooling gels, warming oils, shower gels, tonics and protective creams for use before, during and after exercise. It traces its origin to a body, beauty and hair-care line called Lavit, launched in 1956 by Sport Lavit GmbH in the town of Viernheim [6], and took its current name in a 1981 relaunch. The brand is now owned and produced by Schweizer-Effax GmbH, a company based in Nordwalde in North Rhine-Westphalia [12].

Unlike most brands in the beauty aisle, SPORT LAVIT is built around athletic use rather than appearance. Its range is sold mainly through sports retailers and pharmacies, it has been an official partner of the German athletics federation since 2017, and the company says it became internationally known through the invention of the free-kick spray used by football referees, a claim that sits uneasily beside press reports naming a Brazilian inventor.

Origin & founders

The company's own history places the start of the brand in 1956, when Sport Lavit GmbH in Viernheim began making and selling products under the Lavit name. An online pharmacy's brand page gives the same year and place [14]. No individual founders are named in the available accounts; only the company itself is credited.

In its first decades Lavit was a general body, beauty and hair-care line rather than a sports brand. Among its first products were a tonic and a shower product called Duschfit. According to the company, these were sold mainly to hairdressing salons, which used them to cool and refresh the neck and forehead of customers and to wash hair. In the 1970s the brand was even advertised on German television.

History & milestones

The turning point came in 1981. The company relaunched Lavit, changed the name to Sport Lavit and registered the new name as a protected trademark. The range was revised and expanded at the same time, with cosmetic bath additives added for the first time, and from then on the products were sold only under the Sport Lavit name [6].

The two original products survived the change of direction. Writing what it described as 65 years after the brand's beginnings, the company said that the tonic and Duschfit remained among its top sellers and a fixed part of the range. The tonic lives on today in the Ice Sport Tonic and Cooling Sport Tonic.

The founding date therefore depends on which name is meant. The company dates the brand to 1956, when it began as Lavit; the SPORT LAVIT name itself dates from the 1981 relaunch. Both dates come from the same company history page, and this article follows the earlier date as the brand's origin.

### The free-kick spray claim

The most striking line in the company's history concerns football. Sport Lavit says the brand became internationally known through its invention of the free-kick spray. The company adds that the spray is used in the first, second and third divisions of German professional football and at various FIFA tournaments around the world [6].

Independent reporting tells a different story about who invented the spray. In May 2024 the German regional newspaper Volksstimme described the Brazilian Heine Allemagne as the inventor of the free-kick spray, and reported that Brazil's Supreme Court had rejected an appeal by FIFA and ordered football's world governing body to compensate Allemagne and his company, Spuni Comércio de Produtos Esportivos, for unauthorised use of his invention [13]. That report does not mention Sport Lavit. Sport Lavit may supply a spray used in German football, but no independent source confirms either its role as supplier or its claim to have invented the product.

### Partnerships in athletics and football

In recent years the brand has tied itself closely to organised sport. In 2017 SPORT LAVIT became an official partner of the Deutscher Leichtathletik-Verband (DLV), the German athletics federation, which puts the brand and its products at major national athletics events [9]. In 2020 it also became the federation's official hygiene partner, supporting the DLV and its athletes in carrying out hygiene measures [11]. The company says this direct exchange with athletes feeds into the development of new products, and its partnership page carries endorsements from athletes such as heptathlete Carolin Schäfer, who describes using Sport Gel Hot to loosen her muscles after long training sessions.

In football, the brand names the club SC Preußen Münster as a partner, and in 2022 it once again became an official partner of the club. It also presents the table tennis player Dimitrij Ovtcharov, an Olympic medallist, as its brand ambassador [10].

Ownership

SPORT LAVIT belongs to Schweizer-Effax GmbH of Nordwalde, Germany, whose name appears as the operator and copyright holder of the brand's official website [12]. The company is led by managing directors Guido Venschott and Philipp Hasebrock. On the brand's history page, Schweizer-Effax describes itself as more than 110 years old and says it has been established in the sporting-goods trade for over 80 years, working with numerous sports federations.

How and when the brand passed from the original Sport Lavit GmbH in Viernheim to Schweizer-Effax is not publicly documented. There are also signs of a wider corporate group: the brand's website directs job seekers to the careers page of the Eimermacher Gruppe, and the company says that its raw materials and processes are subject to pharmaceutical law within the Eimermacher Gruppe [8]. The formal relationship between the group and Schweizer-Effax is not spelled out publicly.

The range is also sold through a separate Swiss online shop trading as Sport Lavit Service, whose legal notice names a contact in Rupperswil rather than the manufacturer [2]. That shop appears to act as a sales channel rather than as the brand owner.

Philosophy & positioning

SPORT LAVIT presents itself as care made by athletes for athletes. Its tagline, "Dein Körper gibt alles. Gib ihm was zurück" ("Your body gives everything. Give something back to it"), frames the range as support for warm-up, cooling and recovery. The company describes its values in terms borrowed from the sports field: enthusiasm, solid team spirit, a passion for challenge and the kick of training.

The range is organised by function rather than by body part or skin type. Products are grouped as cooling, warming, combined cooling and warming, or protective, and the packaging uses colours, numbers and scales so that an athlete can find the right product at a glance on the shelf. Today the range comprises around 27 products, which the company says cover every situation from a hard training session to relaxation afterwards.

Germany is central to the brand's identity. The company says its products are developed and made in Germany and describes them as doping-free.

Products & innovation

Cooling products form the core of the range. The Ice Fit Sport Shower Gel, which the company calls "the ice bath for the shower", relies on what it describes as a menthol-caffeine complex for an intense cooling effect. A 2020 press release for the Duschfit shower gels said the menthol gives a strong cooling effect as soon as the gel is lathered, with a caffeine complex added to invigorate the body. Sport Gel Ice is an intensely cooling gel that the brand says can also be used during exercise, and a roll-on version combines mint oil with extract of devil's claw.

On the warming side, the range includes the Warm Up Body Oil, described as helping muscles prepare for exertion and keeping them warm in wet and cold conditions, and Sport Gel Hot, a strong warming ointment for tense or stiff muscles. Several of these products have recently been added in compact roll-on formats for use on the move.

The protective products address problems specific to particular sports. Skin Protect forms an invisible film against chafing and blisters for runners, cyclists and swimmers; an Anti Chlor shower gel is aimed at swimmers; and the line also includes a grip cream, an insect-repellent spray, a relaxing bath, a massage oil and a cooling body lotion. A 3-in-1 shower gel is described by the brand as having a slightly acidic pH close to that of the skin, suited to athletes who shower several times a day.

For individual products, including the Ice Fit shower gel, the company states that the formulas are free of parabens, silicones and paraffins, pH-neutral to the skin, and dermatologically tested, carrying a Dermatest seal with the rating "very good" [5].

Sustainability

Production takes place at the Schweizer-Effax site in Nordwalde, where the company says the entire value chain is concentrated. The company holds a certificate for Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), a quality-control standard, and says its production follows guidelines drawn from human medicine. In 2004 the Steinfurt district of North Rhine-Westphalia awarded Schweizer-Effax an Ökoprofit certificate, a municipal programme that recognises companies for reducing their environmental impact [15].

The company describes the Nordwalde production site as CO2-optimised and says it buys green electricity and applies measures to save energy and resources [8].

Current status

SPORT LAVIT is active. Its official website carries content dated 2026, including Dimitrij Ovtcharov's 2026 tournament calendar and a copyright notice from Schweizer-Effax covering 2023 to 2026, and it runs an online shop alongside new roll-on products. The range continues to be sold through sports retailers and pharmacies in Germany and neighbouring German-speaking countries.
