Stora Skuggan

Stora Skuggan is a Swedish niche fragrance house based in Stockholm, founded in 2015 by five multidisciplinary artists who built every scent around a myth, legend or natural phenomenon [10]. The name is Swedish for roughly "the great shadow," and the house remains independent and active, with new releases as recently as 2024 and 2025.

The five founders — Anna Barkne, Tomas Hempel, Olle Hemmendorff, Jonas Nordin and Martin Nicolausson — met in 2005 while studying at Beckmans College of Design in Stockholm [10]. Rather than following the usual route of hiring established perfumers and outside design agencies, they chose to do the work themselves, an approach that has shaped the house since its first release.

Hempel began learning perfumery in 2010, and the others gradually joined the effort [10]. After several years of experimentation the group launched formally in 2015 with its debut fragrance, Fantôme de Maules [10]. Hempel has described the collective as "a nose in unison," explaining that "everything has to pass our ten nostrils thousands of times before we are ready to add something new."

The house's several sources give slightly different accounts of what the name refers to. The Berlin retailer GATE194 ties it to Stora Skuggan, a park in Stockholm [9], while a separate listing describes it as a northern Swedish area known for untouched nature [13]; both translate the phrase as roughly "the great shadow." The two are broadly reconcilable, as Stora Skuggan is a park and nature area in northern Stockholm.

Each Stora Skuggan fragrance is organised around a story — "a myth or a phenomenon that's maybe real or not," as the founders put it. The company frames its work as a merger of conceptual ideas, wearable art and aesthetic objects, drawing on history, mysticism and pop culture [9]. Its stated aim is complete autonomy over every stage of creation, from formulation through to packaging and branding [9].

Hempel has summarised the independent method directly: "We have done everything ourselves; every little detail has been formed by our hands." Development can be slow, with scents sometimes requiring hundreds of trials before release. The fragrances are described as gender-fluid, and the bottles carry a recognisable design signature of sleek glass and oversized, orb-shaped caps.

The house works chiefly in eau de parfum, alongside at least one candle. Its catalogue includes Fantôme de Maules, Silphium, Mistpouffer, Thumbsucker, Monkeyflower, Pine, Hexensalbe, Azalai and Moonmilk. Each is tied to a narrative: Silphium reconstructs an ancient plant harvested to extinction in classical antiquity, while Monkeyflower draws on a Victorian-era flower that, according to the brand's account, mysteriously lost its scent around 1900.

The scents are built from a mix of natural and synthetic materials. Hemmendorff has argued that synthetic ingredients can be environmentally preferable to all-natural alternatives, since they require fewer resources than cultivating natural raw materials [10] — a position that runs against much of the marketing convention in fragrance. All fragrances are handmade in Stockholm [8]. The house has also released a series of collaborative projects with named artists and musicians, among them the Swedish musician Jens Lekman.

Silphium was a finalist for the Art and Olfaction Awards, which recognise independent and artisan perfumery [10]. The house has been the subject of editorial coverage, including a Highsnobiety feature titled "Keeping Perfume Weird With Stora Skuggan" [10].

Stora Skuggan is active and independent, with no outside parent company recorded. It operates a Stockholm studio with posted opening hours and an online store shipping to more than 80 destinations. Its most recent fragrances, Pine and Monkeyflower, are dated 2024 and 2025, and the site carries a 2026 copyright notice. The fragrances are distributed internationally through retailers including SSENSE, Nose Shop and Scent Bar [10].
