Overview
Supergoop! is a United States sun-care company headquartered in San Antonio, Texas. It was founded by Holly Thaggard around the mid-2000s and built its identity on a single idea: that sunscreen should be an everyday habit rather than a product reserved for the beach. The company describes itself as "Experts in SPF" and formulates a broad range of face, body and makeup products that all carry sun protection.
The brand's own About page and a 2021 Blackstone press release date the founding to 2005 [1][5], while the business publication Foundr reports that "Supergoop! launched in 2007" [6] — a discrepancy that may reflect the difference between the company's founding and its first commercial launch. Supergoop! remains active: it is majority-owned by the investment firm Blackstone, marked its twentieth year in 2025, and holds an ongoing partnership as the official sun-care of the PGA TOUR.

Origin and founders
Supergoop! traces its beginnings to a personal turning point for its founder. According to Thaggard, a close friend — a former college roommate who was completing a dermatology residency — was diagnosed with skin cancer at age 29 [4]. That diagnosis reframed sun protection for Thaggard as a daily health measure rather than a seasonal one. She has said she "always wanted to make SPF a healthy habit like brushing your teeth or washing your hands."
Before founding the company, Thaggard worked briefly as a third-grade teacher and spent time performing as a harpist [6]. Rather than launching a standalone sunscreen, she set out to fold SPF into everyday beauty essentials such as primers and setting powders, aiming to make sun protection invisible and habitual. The company's first product was the PLAY Everyday Lotion SPF 50.
Ownership
In December 2021, Blackstone Growth, the growth-equity arm of Blackstone, announced a majority investment in Supergoop! [5]. The Thaggard and Emery families and several earlier investors — including Encore Consumer Capital, CULT Capital and CircleUp — retained equity after the deal. Blackstone's statement described Thaggard as having created "a new category in SPF-focused skincare."
Philosophy and positioning
Supergoop!'s stated mission is to "change the way the world thinks about and embraces sunscreen" and to move it "out of the beach bag and into everyday life." The company frames daily SPF as both a skincare and a preventive-health practice, and says it has developed more than 40 "feel-good, derm-tested" formulas across skin types and routines. Its taglines include "Make your days brighter."
On formulation, the company says its products have been made "without oxybenzone and parabens" since day one, and are also free of phthalates and octinoxate. It states that all products are cruelty-free and vegan, that a board-certified dermatologist tests every formula, and that products are tested under FDA regulations for over-the-counter sunscreens. Through its Ounce By Ounce program, the company says it aims to donate sunscreen valued at $1 million annually to communities.
Products
The brand's range spans face, body and makeup, with sun protection built into each. Its most recognized product is Unseen Sunscreen SPF 50, an invisible, primer-like formula; on Sephora it has drawn more than 1,000 reviews and 16,000 "loves," and shoppers have described it as the "best sunscreen out there" [7]. Other frequently cited products include the PLAY Everyday Lotion, Glowscreen SPF 40, Mineral Mattescreen and the Protec(tint) Skin Tint SPF 50.
Supergoop! is positioned in the prestige tier and is sold through multiple channels, including Sephora, Bluemercury, Nordstrom and Kohl's [7]. The founder profile in Foundr reported that the company reached $250 million in sales in the year preceding its 2023 article [6].
Current status
Supergoop! is an active company. Its most recent visible milestones include its twentieth anniversary in 2025 and its role as the official sun-care partner of the PGA TOUR [1]. It operates under Blackstone majority ownership and distributes internationally, including in the Nordic markets.
