Overview
Sutra Beauty is an American hair-tools brand founded in California in 2014 by Liam Ben David, who also serves as its chief executive [4]. The company makes heat-styling devices — flat irons, blow dryers, thermal brushes and curling tools — alongside a small line of heat-protection hair care. Its central idea is what it trademarks as Healthy Heat, an approach built on infrared and ionic technology that the company says lets hair be styled at lower temperatures with less damage.
Before starting Sutra, Ben David had worked in the hair industry since around 2005, developing tools behind the scenes for other manufacturers and brands [4]. The brand remains active, with recent product launches and ongoing trade-press coverage.

Origin and founders
Ben David has described a long apprenticeship in the sector: "I've been in the hair industry since around 2005, working closely with manufacturers and brands, mainly behind the scenes, developing tools" [4]. He launched Sutra as his own brand in 2014, after roughly nine years spent making tools for others.
Sources differ slightly on the founding date. The trade publication Estetica Export records it as 2014 [4], and this is the year Sutra's own account of Ben David's career supports. The brand's website, however, refers to having "spent a decade learning" as of the mid-2020s, which would imply a founding closer to 2016 [1]. The 2014 date is the explicit, corroborated one; the website phrasing reads as approximate marketing copy rather than a precise claim.
Products and technology
Sutra's catalogue centres on heat-styling hardware: flat irons, blow dryers, heat and thermal brushes, and curling irons and wavers, grouped into an Infrared Series and an Ultra Violet line. Signature devices include the IR2 Infrared Flat Iron, the BD IR Infrared Blow Dryer and the IR Infrared blowout brush, whose salon uptake the founder has said surprised him: "The success of our blowout brush completely surprised me. I thought it would never work in salons" [4]. A separate Heat Guard hair-care range — a serum, spray and renewal spray — is formulated with hyaluronic acid and positioned as protection against heat, chemical and environmental damage.
The unifying concept is Healthy Heat Technology, which the company describes as using infrared and ionic technology "to style hair evenly, helping reduce moisture loss while delivering Smoother, Longer-Lasting Results." Sutra states that the approach requires lower temperatures for effective styling and reduces frizz, breakage and split ends. A more recent development pairs heat with ultraviolet frequencies, which the company says enables "more effective styling at lower temperatures, thereby protecting hair health" [4]. As with most manufacturer performance claims, these are the brand's own descriptions rather than independent findings.
Philosophy and positioning
Sutra frames its products around an ongoing "healthy hair journey" rather than a single result, using the tagline "The Root to Healthy Hair." Its stated mission is that every tool and formula is "designed for the chapter you're in right now, and built for every one still ahead of you" [1]. The founder has positioned the brand as professional-first, saying that "professional performance is non-negotiable, and consumer-friendliness is a natural extension" [4]. Distribution reflects that stance, balancing salon and professional channels with retail; its primary markets are in North America, with a stated expansion into Europe, specifically Spain [4].
On packaging, the company says it has "phased out plastic trays and blister packs in favour of recycled paper and eco-certified packaging" [4].
Recognition and partnerships
Sutra works with hairstylists as ambassadors and demonstrators. The celebrity stylist Gabriel Samra is a brand ambassador with a co-branded "Gabriel Samra x SUTRA" collaboration line, and stylist Scott King appears in the brand's styling tutorials. In 2025, Estetica Export ran a trade feature on the brand's infrared and ultraviolet technology and distribution strategy [4], and Beauty Launchpad reported on the Gabriel Samra partnership [6].
Current status
Sutra Beauty is an active company. Its most recent visible activity includes launching its ultraviolet-enhanced technology at the Cosmoprof trade show in Las Vegas and continued 2024–2025 trade coverage [4]. It sells through direct-to-consumer channels and third-party retailers, and its products are carried by several Nordic resellers.
