Overview
Swiss Arabian is an Emirati fragrance house founded in 1974 and based in the United Arab Emirates. It was the first perfume manufacturing house in the UAE, and it built its identity around a blend of Arabian olfactory traditions — oud, rose, saffron, incense — with European perfumery technique [2]. The company remains active: it operates several manufacturing facilities in the UAE, retails through more than 110 stores across the Gulf, exports to over 80 countries, and continued to launch new fragrances into 2025 and 2026 [4].
The house is owned by the Swiss Arabian Perfumes Group (SAPG), a family-run group whose portfolio also includes the sister fragrance brand Sapil [7].
Origin and founders
Swiss Arabian was established in 1974 by Hussein Adam Ali, a perfumer who had moved to the UAE from Yemen [2][7]. According to the company, that year "Mr. Hussein Adam Ali's passion for perfumery blossomed into establishing Swiss Arabian as the first perfume house in the UAE." The founding year is consistently given as 1974 across the brand's own material and Gulf press.
The founding involved the Swiss-French fragrance ingredient company Givaudan. The brand's own history describes the venture as "the first perfume manufacturing company in partnership with Givaudan," and the name Swiss Arabian itself is traced to that collaboration — the "Swiss" technique paired with "Arabian" notes. The role attributed to Givaudan varies by source. Swiss Arabian's own-story page names Hussein Adam Ali as the sole founder [2], while Gulf News describes the business as set up with Givaudan S.A. as Swiss principal and partner, with Ali's sons Nabeel and Nader Adam Ali joining later and expanding it into a multinational operation [7].
Gulf News reports that Ali arrived from Yemen at age 30 and that the first operation, in Sharjah, occupied 5,000 square feet, became operational within six months, and was financed with an investment of half a million dirhams [7]. The company began, by its own account, as a trading house with three employees.
Ownership
Swiss Arabian is part of the Swiss Arabian Perfumes Group. Gulf News reports that the group's portfolio expanded over time to include other fragrance labels such as Sapil, Shirley May, Shirley May Deluxe and Alta Moda [7]. Leadership passed within the founding family, with Nabeel and Nader Adam Ali, sons of the founder, taking on operational roles.
Philosophy and positioning
The brand's central idea is duality — bridging what it calls Oriental and Western fragrance traditions. Swiss Arabian describes itself as "founded on a blend of Western & Oriental craftsmanship" and says the fusion allows it to "transform our local knowledge into a universal quality brand." Its tagline, "The Perfect Mix," is presented as shorthand for fragrances "inspired by the East and the West."
In price terms the house positions itself in an accessible range rather than as a prestige label, with perfumes on its own site priced around 66 to 68 US dollars. On the community fragrance site Fragrantica, its best-known scent is described as an entry point to Arabic perfumery for many Western buyers [14].
Products and innovation
Swiss Arabian's catalogue centres on fragrance: perfumes for men, women and unisex wear, hair mists, concentrated perfume oils (including Dehn El Oud and other oil lines), incense, and home fragrance. Recurring materials across its lines include oud, rose, vanilla, saffron, amber, patchouli, incense and tobacco.
Its signature scent is Shaghaf Oud, described in brand material as its globally best-selling fragrance and the anchor of a wider Shaghaf range. Other named lines include a numbered "01" series — Vanilla 01, Rose 01, Tobacco 01, Incense 01, Patchouli 01 — alongside Attar Ghutra and the traditional Dehn El Oud oils. In 2025 the company presented three new fragrances at Beautyworld Middle East: Shaghaf Amber Infusion, Enigma of Taif and Vanilla 01 [12].
On manufacturing, all Swiss Arabian fragrances are made in the UAE, and the company states it was the first perfume company in the region to receive ISO 9001 certification. It says it now runs five modern manufacturing facilities spread across 165,000 square feet; an external business directory lists six facilities, but the figure of five comes from the brand's own most recent account [4]. The company also states that it does not test its perfumes on animals.
Recognition
Swiss Arabian's Attar Ghutra Eau de Parfum won a FIFI Award in 2013 for most popular appeal Arabian fragrance in the male category [9]. The company was also named among Super Brand award winners in 2019, and Khaleej Times reports it received an Environmental Performance award from the UAE Ministry of Environment and Water [9]. The house and its founder have been the subject of features in Gulf News, Khaleej Times and Faces of UAE.
Current status
Swiss Arabian is active. The company marked its 50th anniversary in 2024 and, by its own and third-party accounts, employs more than 1,000 people, retails through over 110 stores across the Gulf, and exports to more than 80 countries [7]. New fragrance launches continued into 2026, including Patchouli 01 and Shaghaf Nectar Blush [15].
