Overview
SWISS O-PAR is a German hair-care brand owned by Rufin cosmetic GmbH, a family-run company based in Wedemark in the Hannover region of Lower Saxony. Rufin introduced the brand in German department stores in 1980 and, in the early 1990s, extended it across the country's drugstore sector [2]. The range centres on shampoos, conditioners and hair treatments built around familiar ingredients such as argan oil, coconut milk, honey and tea tree oil, and it is produced at the company's own site in Wedemark.
Despite the name, the brand's story is a German one. The company's published history does not explain the word "Swiss", and every stage it describes, from the founding of the parent company to present-day production, takes place in and around Hannover. The company itself writes the name as "Swiss-o-Par" in running text.
Origin & founders
The roots of SWISS O-PAR lie in its parent company. Rufin cosmetic was founded in Hannover in 1960 by Otto Rumpfkeil, and in its early years it worked in import and export rather than making its own products [2]. During the 1970s the company changed direction and concentrated on specialist hair care for professionals, with hair treatments and hair tonics as its main lines.
That professional experience became the basis for a consumer brand. In 1980 Rufin launched SWISS O-PAR in German department stores, taking its hair-care know-how from the salon trade to ordinary shoppers. No individual creator of the brand is named; the company presents it as something Rufin built as a whole, describing SWISS O-PAR as a brand that "accompanies generations".
The brand's age is presented in two ways on its own website. The homepage states that SWISS O-PAR has stood for hair-care expertise "since 1980", while the headline on the same page speaks of "over 60 years of experience" [1]. The company page explains the gap: the 60 years refer to Rufin cosmetic, founded in 1960, whereas 1980 is the year the SWISS O-PAR brand itself was introduced [2]. This article follows 1980 as the brand's founding year.
History & milestones
The company's own timeline sets out four main stages. After its start in import and export in 1960 and its turn to professional hair care in the 1970s, Rufin brought SWISS O-PAR to German department stores in 1980. The next step came at the start of the 1990s, when distribution widened to cover the entire German drugstore segment [2].
That shift from department stores to drugstores shaped how the brand reaches people today. On its website SWISS O-PAR lists German drugstore chains such as dm, Rossmann, Müller and budni alongside supermarket groups including Rewe, Edeka and Kaufland, with a note that not every retailer carries the full range.
At some point the company moved from Hannover to Wedemark, specifically the village of Bissendorf, where it is based today; the date of the move is not stated. Rufin describes its present-day work in broad terms, saying the company is active across Europe and that SWISS O-PAR has "built trust Europe-wide".
Ownership
According to the company's own account, SWISS O-PAR was created by and still belongs to Rufin cosmetic GmbH, which also gives its name in the footer of the brand website [2]. Rufin describes itself as having been family-run for more than 60 years.
The website's legal notice names a different entity. It lists Gieseke cosmetic GmbH as the company responsible for the site, at the same address in Wedemark (Auf dem Kessellande 1) and with the same managing directors, Sven-Otto Rumpfkeil and Hendrik Rumpfkeil [5]. How the two companies relate to each other is not publicly explained. This article treats Rufin cosmetic GmbH as the brand owner, as the company page does, while noting that Gieseke cosmetic GmbH operates the website.
No acquisitions or changes of ownership are publicly known.
Philosophy & positioning
SWISS O-PAR frames itself as a hair-care specialist that offers a product for every hair type. The company says it provides care "matched to every hair type", whether hair is normal, fine, greasy, dry or damaged. Its tagline, "Es dreht sich alles um Pflege", translates roughly as "It's all about care".
That idea also organises the website. Alongside a conventional list of product lines, a section called "Problemlöser" (problem solver) sorts the range by hair concern: dry hair prone to split ends and breakage, fine hair, dull hair that lacks shine, greasy hair, stressed hair and dandruff.
The parent company adds its own motto, "Alles Gute für Haut und Haar" ("All the best for skin and hair"). Rufin lists five corporate principles: quality, a culture of product safety, customer focus, environmental responsibility and sustainability, and its employees. The company describes the Wedemark site as the place where it combines "innovation, tradition and quality".
Products & innovation
Most of the range is built around a single ingredient or purpose. Lines named after argan oil, honey, coconut and tea tree oil sit next to a Silver range, a "Pure Pflege" (pure care) shampoo and a deep-cleansing "Tiefenreinigung" shampoo that contains lime extract. According to the company, its argan oil hair treatment is intended for dry, stressed and dull hair, while the tea tree oil shampoo is aimed at scalp irritation, dandruff and greasy hair.
A distinctive part of the line-up is the "Haarkurkissen", small single-use sachets of hair treatment. The brand presents them as a way to care for hair on the go [7]. They come in many versions, including one made with horse marrow and D-panthenol that is described as suited to structurally damaged hair. The range also includes dry shampoos, styling products and a coconut-based styling line.
Some products sit outside hair care. The website lists small ranges for nail care, hair removal and eyebrow and eyelash tint, plus a tanning compact powder called "African Wonder".
The site also groups products by formulation. A "Vegan" category [6] and a category of silicone-free products each collect part of the range. Vegan formulation is not a brand-wide standard, however, since the line-up includes the horse-marrow sachet.
The website also sells Brother's Love, a beard wax from Bavaria. The company presents it as a brand in its own right rather than as a SWISS O-PAR line [8].
No proprietary technologies, patents or clinical studies are publicly documented for the brand.
Sustainability
The sustainability measures described by the company apply to Rufin cosmetic and its Wedemark site rather than to individual products. According to Rufin, the site holds ISO 14001 environmental-management certification and takes part in the ÖKOPROFIT Hannover programme. The company also says it buys only green electricity and runs a 500 kWp photovoltaic system at the site [2].
These are certifications of the company and its production site. No product-level certifications, such as cruelty-free or organic labels, are documented for SWISS O-PAR.
Recognition & reception
The brand's most visible independent coverage comes from ÖKO-TEST, the German consumer magazine that tests products for safety and environmental impact. In 2009 the magazine tested 18 shampoos for normal hair, judging them on their ingredients and other defects but not on how well they worked. The SWISS O-PAR Orangen-Shampoo (orange shampoo) received an overall grade of "ausreichend" (sufficient), with "ausreichend" for ingredients and "sehr gut" (very good) for other defects [11].
A decade later, ÖKO-TEST examined 26 hair treatments, looking for microplastics and other substances of concern. Thirteen products received the top grade of "sehr gut", while four were rated "ungenügend" (inadequate), the lowest grade. The SWISS O-PAR Haarkur Kokosmilch Feuchtigkeit & Duft, a coconut-milk hair treatment, was one of those four, alongside treatments from Dove, John Frieda and L'Oréal Elvital, as reported by the regional newspaper leinetal24 in October 2019 [10]. The report noted that the magazine had found silicones and other synthetic polymers in nearly half of the treatments tested.
No awards for the brand are publicly documented.
Current status
SWISS O-PAR is active. As of October 2026 its website carried a 2026 copyright notice and listed open positions at the Wedemark site, including apprenticeships starting on 1 August 2027 [2]. The brand continues to be sold mainly through drugstores and supermarkets, and it maintains Instagram and Facebook accounts.
