Talbot Runhof

Talbot Runhof is a German couture and eveningwear house based in Munich, founded by Johnny Talbot and Adrian Runhof. On its own website the company dates its founding to 2000 [1], though the label began earlier under a different name (see below). While the house is best known for evening and cocktail dresses, its beauty-relevant work is a fragrance line: a collection of six "Purple" eau de parfums introduced in 2020 to mark the brand's twentieth anniversary [2]. The house remains active, with several 2025 collections and boutiques in Munich, Berlin, Düsseldorf and Zurich.

The label grew out of a chance meeting. According to the company, Johnny Talbot and Adrian Runhof met by chance at a Munich nightclub and went on to found the house together. Talbot, born in 1964 in Nashville, Tennessee, trained as an electrical engineer and programmer and had worked for Radio Free Europe in Munich before turning to design; the brand credits him with the "mathematically precise" construction of its garments. Runhof, born in 1963 in Mainz, came from a family of fashion producers and retailers and studied business administration before entering the trade. Within the partnership, he is described as the force guiding material selection and overall aesthetic.

The house's founding date is not recorded consistently. Talbot Runhof's own site gives 2000 [1], while German Wikipedia and other references trace the business to a label the pair originally called "All About Eve," founded around 1991 or 1992 [4][6]. The name was changed to Talbot Runhof in 2000, reportedly to avoid a trademark conflict with the Joop perfume of the same name [4]. The 2000 date also aligns with the brand's description of its 2020 fragrance launch as a twentieth-anniversary project [2].

After the 2000 renaming, the house built its reputation on eveningwear. From 2006 it showed twice a year at Paris Fashion Week, holding official calendar status through 2018 as one of only two German labels to do so [4]. The move onto the Paris schedule marked the brand's shift from a Munich atelier to an internationally shown couture name.

In 2020 the house extended into perfume, launching its own "Purple" collection to commemorate its twentieth anniversary [2]. The fragrances were composed by perfumers Sylvie Fischer and Jérôme di Marino of the Takasago fragrance house, produced under licensee 3senses, with flacon and packaging design by Lutz Hermann.

The house sums up its design credo as "It's all about knowing where to stop — never go too far, but always far enough," a principle it presents as a preference for restraint over excess. The company positions the label around timeless elegance and craftsmanship, working with textile makers including embroidered paillettes from St. Gallen and jacquards from Como. Purple is treated as the brand's signature colour, and the fragrance line was conceived as a translation of the house's favoured fabrics into scent — each perfume named for a material.

The perfume collection comprises six eau de parfums, each linked to a fabric: Purple Cotton (built on white flowers such as lily of the valley, jasmine and magnolia over musk and cedarwood), Purple Leather (an oriental, fruity floral with orange blossom, cherry and heliotrope), Purple Sequins (amber, myrrh, vanilla and pepper), Purple Tweed (iris, rose, violet and peach on a leathery base), Purple Velvet (sandalwood, tuberose, jasmine, lemon and cardamom) and Purple Satin (a woody, fruity blend with praline, amber, jasmine and violet leaf). Alongside apparel and accessories, the fragrances are sold through Talbot Runhof boutiques, the brand's online shop, selected perfumeries and the Munich department store Ludwig Beck.

The house's clothing and accessories are manufactured in family-run Bavarian workshops, with the Munich atelier in the Obersendling district serving as its creative headquarters.

Talbot Runhof received the Petra German Fashion Award in 2005 [4]. German Wikipedia lists a number of celebrity clients of the fashion house, among them Lady Gaga, Kristen Stewart, Helen Mirren and Kamala Harris [4].

The house is active. According to its own magazine and lookbook pages, it released Fall/Winter 2025/26, Spring/Summer 2025, Resort 2025 and a new Dirndl collection during 2025 [7], with Adrian Runhof serving as artistic and managing director. It operates flagship boutiques in Munich, Berlin, Düsseldorf and Zurich, and reports distribution through more than 200 stores worldwide [4].
