Overview
TanCan is a Swedish self-tanning brand owned by Evince Cosmetics AB, a beauty company based in the Gothenburg area that both develops its own labels and distributes others. Founded by Eva Ulin, TanCan focuses exclusively on sunless tanning for the face and body, and positions itself as a vegan, Swedish-made alternative to sun exposure and solarium use.
The company traces the brand's beginnings to Ulin's search for a healthy way to tan for her own wedding. According to the parent company, TanCan launched as Sweden's first home-use self-tanning product, and it remains active, with an operating storefront and retail distribution across Scandinavia as of 2026.
Origin & founders
TanCan grew out of the founder's frustration with the self-tanners available in the early 2000s. On the brand's story page, Eva Ulin recalls testing "probably twenty different self-tanning variants" and turning "yellow, orange, blotchy, striped." She wanted a healthier option without heavy additives, and settled on a spray format for easy application — imagining, in her words, a bottle that would let you "spray yourself brown" much like a hair spray.
The brand and its parent company give slightly different dates for the beginning. TanCan's own story page says Ulin conceived the idea in 2003, during her honeymoon on Bali [2]. The parent company, Evince Cosmetics AB, records 2004 as the year Ulin started the company and launched the brand [10]. The two accounts are consistent — 2003 as the idea, 2004 as the company and product launch — and the founding year for the brand is taken as 2004.
The product was developed in collaboration with an unnamed Swedish laboratory, which the company describes as producing Sweden's first home-use spray tan [2].
Ownership
TanCan is owned by Evince Cosmetics AB, a Swedish company founded by Ulin that both creates its own brands and distributes Swedish and international ones [9]. Alongside TanCan, its portfolio has included the makeup label Blinc, and the business combines owned brands with the curation of external ones. Evince also supplies salons with products, machines and training for professional treatments.
The corporate headquarters is recorded as being in the Gothenburg area — specifically Västra Frölunda, at E A Rosengrensgata 7 — per the parent company's listing [9]. The brand's own contact page instead gives an address in Trelleborg, in southern Sweden. The Gothenburg location, tied to the registered parent entity and a Gothenburg phone code, is reported here as the primary corporate base.
Philosophy & positioning
TanCan presents itself under the tagline "Säkert · Solbrun · Snabbt" — safe, tanned, fast — and frames its products as a way to get a "sun-kissed" tone without ultraviolet exposure. The company describes the line as a Swedish vegan sunless-tanning series that gives skin the look of "a week in Aruba."
Vegan and non-animal-tested formulation is central to how the brand describes itself. Its ethics page states plainly that "tancan ÄR VEGANSK" (TanCan is vegan) and that all products are free of animal-derived ingredients and animal testing [4]. These are self-stated claims; the brand cites no third-party vegan or cruelty-free certifications. The company also says its products are approved by Läkemedelsverket, the Swedish Medical Products Agency [5].
Products & innovation
The range is built around DHA (dihydroxyacetone) and erythrulose, two sugars that react with the top layer of skin to develop colour. TanCan describes DHA as a well-established self-tanning ingredient in use since the 1950s, and says pairing it with erythrulose yields a more natural tone and helps avoid orange or yellow casts [3]. Formulas also draw on aloe vera, white tea, coenzyme Q10, vitamins A and E, and shea butter.
The line has grown to about ten products spanning sprays, mousses, wipes, lotions and a scrub, with the parent company naming TanCan Bronze as the best seller [9]. A later addition, the TanCan Aloe Vera Gel for Face & Body, was reviewed by the Swedish outlet Glamazon in 2022, which noted its 96.5% aloe vera content and fragrance-free, paraben-free formula while finding its texture sticky for facial use [12].
Recognition
Editorial coverage of TanCan has been light and confined to Swedish beauty blogs. An early review of the TanCan Bronze spray by Daisy Beauty in 2016 gave it two out of five, with the reviewer finding it poorly suited to fair, pink-toned skin [11]. The 2022 Glamazon review of the aloe vera gel was more favourable on the product's hydrating qualities. No major international press coverage or awards are recorded.
Current status
TanCan is active. Its brand site remains an operating storefront, and its products are sold through Swedish and Danish retailers as well as salons, spas and boutiques. The parent company, Evince Cosmetics AB, is a registered and operating Swedish company, and the most recent editorial activity noted for the brand is the 2022 Glamazon review of a newer product line.
