Terra Ties

Terra Ties is a United States accessories brand founded in 2019 that makes biodegradable hair ties as an alternative to conventional synthetic elastics.[5] It is a small, single-product company built around one line: a pack of hair ties made from natural rubber and organic cotton. The brand remains active, and its ties are sold through its own website, Amazon and a range of eco-focused retailers across several countries.

The idea grew out of a simple observation. According to the company's founding account, the ties were conceived after its founders noticed discarded elastics littering city streets, parks and trails, then learned that standard hair ties are made from synthetic materials that do not readily break down.[5] Terra Ties set out to make a version that would.

Terra Ties centres on a single product: a pack of 27 biodegradable hair ties. They are made from two renewable raw materials — natural rubber tapped from rubber trees and organic cotton — and coloured with natural dyes.[5] The company describes the ties as thicker, softer and more durable than conventional elastics. The packaging is plastic-free and made from recycled content, and both the product and its packaging are described as biodegradable and compostable.[9][7]

The ties are manufactured in China, while the design work is carried out in the United States.[5][9]

The brand's stated philosophy is summed up in its tagline, "Love yourself. Love the Earth."[2] Its mission, as described on its listings, is that everyone should be able to style their hair without making the environment suffer.[8] That positioning places Terra Ties within the wider zero-waste and plastic-free movement in personal care, where slow-to-degrade everyday items are replaced with compostable alternatives.

Terra Ties was included in a 2023 roundup of sustainable hair-tie brands published by the editorial site Sustainably Chic, which described it as a small online brand specialising in fully biodegradable hair elastics.[6]

Terra Ties remains active. Its own website is a brief, static landing page, but the hair ties continue to be sold through Amazon and numerous eco-retailers in the United States, Canada and Europe, and the brand appeared in editorial coverage as recently as 2023.[6]
