Overview
Tetesept (written by the company in lowercase as "tetesept") is a German health and bath brand owned by Merz Lifecare, the consumer-health business of the Frankfurt-based Merz Group. The brand dates from 1966, when its first product, a medicinal bath concentrate for colds, went on sale in Germany [2]. Over six decades the range has grown from that single bath into a broad line of bath additives, shower products, foot care, cold remedies, vitamins, minerals and other over-the-counter health products, sold through drugstores, supermarkets, pharmacies and online.
The brand is closely tied to Friedrich Merz, the pharmacist and chemist who founded the parent company in 1908 and whom the brand credits as its inventor. It is best known for its bath concentrates, above all the Erkältungs Bad (cold bath), which the company still counts among its best-known products. It is active, with separate brand operations in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
Origin & founders
The story of Tetesept begins with the Merz pharmaceutical company rather than with the brand itself. According to Tetesept, Friedrich Merz, a trained pharmacist who had also studied chemistry and pharmacy, founded his own pharmaceutical business in 1908 and went on to develop a range of health and beauty products [2]. Merz lived from 1884 to 1979 [11], and German-language Wikipedia lists the Tetesept product line among the products he developed [12].
Two dates therefore appear in connection with the brand. The company's about page is headed "Apotheker-Kompetenz seit 1908" (pharmacist expertise since 1908), which refers to the founding of the Merz business. The brand itself dates to 1966, the year the company gives for its first product; a brand profile in the German trade journal Lebensmittel Praxis likewise describes Tetesept as a health brand "since 1966" [14]. The brand's own anniversary milestones follow the later date: it celebrated 50 years of brand history in 2016, and its Swiss homepage now speaks of "60 years".
That first product was the Erkältungs Bad, a medicinal bath concentrate intended to ease cold symptoms. The company says it is based on a combination of four essential oils, though its pages do not name them. Tetesept describes the bath as still one of its best-known products today.
History & milestones
Tetesept expanded beyond the bath quickly. In 1968 it added its first cough syrup, for coughs and hoarseness, which established the second pillar of the brand: cold and self-medication products sold alongside bath additives.
During the 1970s the company extended its "bath therapy" idea to new uses. The brand's Austrian timeline lists a calming bath (now sold as the Anti-Stress Bad), a vitalising bath (now the Muskel Vital Bad) and a relaxation bath. The Entspannungs-Bad, introduced as a stress remedy, is described by the company as one of its top sellers to this day.
In the early 1990s the vitamin and mineral products of a sister brand, tetefit, were folded into the Tetesept range. The decade also brought bath salts with essential oils (1993) and a set of intensive baths developed specifically for pharmacies (1995). In 1998 Tetesept introduced what it calls the first health showers on the market, together with a lotion for muscles and joints, and in 1999 it launched scented bath salts and baths in Germany in response to the growing interest in wellness.
The 2000s were a period of steady range extension. The company lists bath salts made with 100 percent sea salt (2001), herbal teas that stayed on the market for a few years (2002), cream-oil and men's showers (2004), aroma baths (2006) and a "baths of the world" line (2009). In 2010 it added children's bath products under the name "tetesept Kinder Badespaß", and in the same period expanded into cold products taken by mouth and dietary supplements in Austria.
In 2013 the brand introduced bath concentrates that it says keep working for hours after the bath, along with its first foam baths. The following year it launched what it describes as the first foaming sea salt, and in 2015 oil-based shower balms under the name oil intense.
The mid-2010s also saw the creation of a lifestyle-oriented sister brand, t: by tetesept. Its first products, a range of bubble baths, launched in autumn 2015; bath salts followed in early 2016 and showers in autumn 2016. Owner Merz described the new label as drawing on Tetesept's reputation for quality while putting pleasure and design, rather than medical benefit, at the centre.
The brand marked its 50th anniversary in 2016, by which time the range included more than 160 products. Later additions include the brand's first foot-care series in 2020, a baby-care line in 2022 and, in 2023, a new sub-brand for showers and baths called true by tetesept.
Ownership
Tetesept belongs to Merz Lifecare, which the brand describes as the trading name of Merz Consumer Care GmbH, part of the Merz Group, headquartered in Frankfurt am Main [2]. The brand's Austrian site describes Merz as an owner-managed pharmaceutical company with more than 100 years of history. In May 2023 the group replaced the corporate brand name Merz Consumer Care with Merz Lifecare, while the legal company name Merz Consumer Care GmbH was retained [10].
Within Merz Lifecare, Tetesept sits alongside Merz Spezial, a range of nutritional supplements and skin-care products for skin, hair and nails [9]. Products sold in Switzerland are marketed by a separate Swiss company, Merz Lifecare Switzerland AG, based in Allschwil [4], and the Austrian subsidiary develops and markets products locally.
One source gives a different corporate name. The brand profile published by Lebensmittel Praxis calls Tetesept a health brand of "tetesept Pharma GmbH", described as a research-based drug manufacturer, while listing Merz Consumer Care GmbH in Frankfurt as the contact [14]. That profile is older than the brand's current pages, and it is not documented whether tetesept Pharma GmbH was an earlier or subsidiary company name. The brand's own sites and English-language Wikipedia both place Tetesept under Merz.
Philosophy & positioning
Tetesept presents itself as a health brand rather than a cosmetics brand. The company describes its approach as a combination of traditional herbal medicine and modern science, and says its products are developed in its own research and development departments together with pharmacists. It frames the goal as noticeably effective health care for overall well-being.
The brand says its formulas are patented and its products are made to pharmaceutical standards, with production in Europe. It also claims its products combine natural ingredients with scientifically confirmed efficacy, although its pages cite no specific studies. The values it names are quality, continuity and innovation, which it links to being part of a long-established, owner-managed pharmaceutical company. Its stated mission is to be a responsible partner for people's health and well-being, including for future generations.
In the market, Tetesept is positioned as an affordable health brand for everyday shopping. The company describes its growth into a strong brand in drugstores and consumer markets across German-speaking countries, and its products are sold in drugstores, supermarkets and pharmacies as well as online. On its Austrian site, the brand states that it is number one for baths in general retail in Austria, a footnoted claim of its own [6].
Products & innovation
The range falls into two broad areas. The first is bathing: medicinal bath concentrates, wellness and children's baths, bath salts, foam baths and showers. The company highlights bath additives with active ingredients such as peat (moor), lavender and lemon balm. The second area covers health products, including cold and cough remedies, vitamins and minerals, foot care, and self-medication products for digestion, sleep, muscles and circulation. Supplements marketed for skin, hair and nails form part of this health range.
Three products stand out in the company's own account. The Erkältungs Bad is the brand's original product and remains one of its best known. The Entspannungs-Bad, dating from the 1980s, is described as a long-running top seller. On the health side, Merz singled out the vitamin product tetesept B12 Vita-Kick in 2017, when Merz Consumer Care managing director Frank Baldauf called it "a blockbuster in the mass market"; he also named the specialist product tetesept Femi Baby as a successful launch [8].
For its vitamin products the brand promotes a technology it calls Direkt-Versorgung (direct supply), which it describes as patented. No patent is named or numbered on its pages.
According to Merz, Tetesept passed 100 million euros in sales in the German mass market for the first time in 2016, after double-digit growth over the previous year [8]. The same release put the brand second in the German bath market, with a 15.2 percent value share, and second at brand level in the over-the-counter mass market. These figures are the owner's own and were not independently verified.
Sustainability
Tetesept says it made sustainability a fixed part of every product-development process in 2019, organised around four principles: remove, reduce, recycle and replace. The company states that its cosmetic formulas are free of microplastics under the EU REACH definition and that it uses certified palm-oil derivatives under the RSPO Mass Balance model. It also reports using more recycled material and less packaging, and says part of its packaging already meets the minimum recyclability of 70 percent set out in the EU packaging directive [3]. The brand has its own development department in Germany and works with contract manufacturers in Europe.
Recognition
A brand profile in Lebensmittel Praxis lists a selection of awards: gold and bronze in the Produkt des Jahres (Product of the Year) awards in 2013, and a Top Marke 2014 distinction from GfK and the trade newspaper Lebensmittel Zeitung. The profile text appears to have been supplied by the brand itself.
Controversies
In October 2019 the news portal t-online.de reported on a test by the consumer magazine Öko-Test of 20 cold-relief baths for its November 2019 issue. The Tetesept Erkältungsbad was one of six products rated "ungenügend" (insufficient), the lowest grade [13]. The testers reported finding the strong allergen delta-3-carene, as well as camphor and PEG compounds, in the Tetesept product. Öko-Test also said there were hardly any studies showing that such baths relieve cold symptoms, and criticised missing warnings for allergy sufferers across the medicinal baths tested. None of the 20 products received a grade above "befriedigend" (satisfactory).
Current status
Tetesept is active. The Swiss brand site runs an online shop, carries a 2026 copyright notice from Merz Lifecare, and marks 60 years of the brand, counting from the 1966 launch. Separate German, Austrian and Swiss websites remain in operation, and the most recent dated milestone in the brand's timeline is the 2023 launch of true by tetesept. Distribution is concentrated in German-speaking Europe.
