Overview
Tous is a Spanish jewelry and accessories house based in Catalonia. It traces its origins to a small watch-repair workshop opened in 1920 by Salvador Tous Blavi and his wife Teresa Ponsa Mas [7]. Over four generations the family business grew into a global brand best known for its bear-shaped pendant, and it later extended into a range of accessories that includes handbags, watches, eyewear and fragrance. Jewelry remains the core business, while perfume is one branch of a wider lifestyle range.
The company is still owned by the founding family. In December 2024 the Tous family repurchased the 25% stake it had sold in 2015, returning to full family ownership. Tous reported revenue of €523 million for 2024 and operates a large international retail network.
Origin and founders
The business began in 1920, when Salvador Tous Blavi and Teresa Ponsa Mas opened a watch-repair workshop in Catalonia [7]. The brand's own heritage timeline traces Salvador's start as a young clockmaker's apprentice and records the family's move to Manresa, where he worked as a watchmaker with a single shop.
The shift from watches to jewelry came in the next generation. In 1965 the founders' son, Salvador Tous Ponsa, married Rosa Oriol, and the couple began developing a new style of jewelry. The company credits Oriol as the design force behind its transformation, stating that "it is impossible to understand TOUS's global projection without Rosa Oriol's figure." In 1970 she set up a jewelry workshop in a back room to personalize pieces, laying the groundwork for the house that followed.
History and milestones
In 1985 Rosa Oriol designed the pendant that became the brand's emblem: a small bear, which the company says was "inspired by a teddy bear and childhood tenderness." Oriol has described its origin as a memory jogged by a shop window: "On one of my trips, I saw a teddy bear in a shop window that brought back fond memories of my childhood. 'Why not make one in gold?' I thought." [8] The bear became the brand's signature motif, and bestselling pieces have carried it since.
The family opened its first Barcelona boutique in 1989 and began international expansion in 1996, reaching markets including Germany, Japan and the United States. Around 2000 the company diversified beyond jewelry into handbags, fragrances, watches, eyewear and baby accessories, and it established the "Tous Perfumes" joint venture with Perfumes y Diseño to develop its scents. In 2020 Tous marked its centennial with a documentary, "OSO," that premiered at the San Sebastián Film Festival, and opened a heritage archive-museum.
Ownership
Tous remained wholly family-held until 2015, when it sold a 25% stake to the Swiss investment fund Partners Group — the first time it had opened its capital to an outside investor [7]. The family repurchased that stake in December 2024, returning the company to full family ownership. Four daughters of Salvador Tous and Rosa Oriol — Rosa, Alba, Laura and Marta — joined the business in the 1990s and hold senior positions, with Alba as chairwoman and Marta directing research and development [8].
Philosophy and positioning
Tous presents itself under the line "jewelers since 1920" and positions its work as accessible design rooted in artisanal tradition. The company describes the bear pendant's intent as transforming a personal idea into "an affordable, versatile piece of jewelry able to arouse tenderness in all those who wear it" [6]. Its heritage project sets out to "document, inventory, disseminate and enhance the historical-business heritage of TOUS," citing values of tradition, excellence, emotion and innovation.
Products and fragrance
Jewelry is the company's core business, though it also produces bags, watches, perfumes, eyewear, textiles and small leather goods [7]. The bear motif runs through its bestselling jewelry.
Tous entered fragrance in 2002 with an eau de toilette for women, followed by a men's scent in 2004 and a children's fragrance in 2012. According to The Moodie Davitt Report, the fragrance line had grown to fourteen products sold in more than 60 countries [8]. The scents are produced through the "Tous Perfumes" joint venture established with Perfumes y Diseño around 2000.
Sustainability
The company frames its sustainability work around three pillars it calls People, Planet and Craftsmanship, and states that it is committed to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. It describes a circular approach across its processes and an aim to extend the lifecycle of its pieces. Tous holds a Responsible Jewellery Council certificate and Leather Working Group certification, both from 2020, and joined the UN Global Compact in 2023 [5].
Recognition
The bear pendant entered the permanent collection of the Barcelona Design Museum in 2017, a status the brand's art director Marta Tous described as making it "an icon of universal design" [6]. In 1997 the Duchess Eugenia Martínez de Irujo became the brand's first ambassador. In 2016 Rosa Oriol and Salvador Tous received a Business Leader of the Year award from the Spain-U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
Current status
Tous is active and operating globally. Sources differ on the scale of its retail network: Wikipedia records more than 600 stores in over 40 countries [7], while the company's own heritage page gives a higher figure of more than 700 stores in over 50 countries [1]. Its most recent recorded activity is the December 2024 repurchase of the Partners Group stake, alongside reported 2024 revenue of €523 million.
