Valobra

Valobra is an Italian soap house founded in Genoa in 1903 by Virgilio Valobra [3]. It is known for triple-milled bath and shaving soaps produced by slow, traditional methods, and it built its reputation on preserving an older Ligurian craft rather than moving to mass manufacturing.

Since the end of 2018 the brand has been owned by Ludovico Martelli S.r.l. [1], the Florence-based company behind Proraso and Marvis. Valobra now operates as a heritage soap line within that group rather than as an independent company, and it maintains no standalone website of its own.

Virgilio Valobra set up his factory in Genoa, in the Liguria region of northwest Italy, in 1903 [3]. According to brand copy carried by several retailers, his aim was to preserve the technique of the eighteenth-century soap masters who had worked along the coast from Portofino to Marseille, continuing their tradition of fine soaps made with craftsmanship and simple ingredients. The company describes its recipes as having been refined steadily over the following decades.

Valobra's production centres on what its marketing calls the traditional Marseille method — a slow process said to involve seasoning a pure soap base for around six months, milling the soap several times with added oils and vitamins, and hand-wrapping each finished bar [2]. The result, the brand says, is a compact, triple-milled bar with a long life and a smooth feel. Its range covers bath soaps and shaving soaps, with fragrances described as balanced and understated rather than assertive.

At the end of 2018 Valobra's toilet soaps were acquired by Ludovico Martelli S.r.l. [1][4], an Italian firm founded in Florence in 1908 that launched the Proraso shaving line in 1948. The wider Martelli portfolio includes Marvis, Floïd, Tenax and other traditional Italian grooming brands [1]. The acquisition date carries a minor discrepancy: Italian Wikipedia and the German retailer Heldenlounge both place the takeover at the end of 2018 [1][4], while a Ludovico Martelli corporate description dates it to 2019 [7], a figure that most likely reflects the line's relaunch rather than the purchase itself. Production of the soaps now sits with Ludovico Martelli, based in the Florence area, rather than at the original Genoa factory.

Valobra continues as a heritage soap line under Ludovico Martelli, and its products remain listed by international retailers and pharmacies across several markets. The availability of its shaving soap has at times been questioned within the wet-shaving community, and the brand keeps no independent web presence of its own, distributing instead through third-party stores.
