Overview
Versatile, styled Versatile Paris, is a French independent perfume house based in Paris. It was founded in January 2021 by Coralie Frébourg, a graduate of the École Supérieure du Parfum, and specialises in alcohol-free, oil-based roll-on perfume extracts alongside a smaller bodycare line [2]. The company positions itself, in its own words, "between skincare and niche perfumery," and frames its fragrances around everyday moments rather than aspirational fantasy.
The brand remains active. As of October 2025 it reported distribution through 400 retailers across 30 countries, more than 65,000 perfumes sold, and one million euros in net revenue [2].
Origin and founders
Coralie Frébourg graduated from the École Supérieure du Parfum in 2019 and completed internships at major fragrance and cosmetics groups before starting the company. The launch was shaped by the COVID-19 pandemic: after a marketing role at a luxury group fell through when hiring froze, Frébourg chose entrepreneurship over continued job-seeking and founded Versatile in January 2021 [2]. In March 2021 she partnered with the FLAIR laboratory and a team of perfumers — Amélie Bourgeois, Anne-Sophie Behaghel, Camille Chemardin and Elia Chiche — to develop the range [2]. A second founder, identified on the company's site only as Pierre, officially joined as co-founder in June 2023 [2].
The company's own accounts place its founding in January 2021 [2]. Some editorial profiles instead date the brand to 2022 [6]; a May 2023 interview described it as "year and a half old," a figure consistent with an early launch [7]. The January 2021 date is the founder's stated start.
Philosophy and positioning
Versatile describes itself as an alternative to what it calls institutional perfumery. Its stated mission is "to make the institutional bold," and its collections are, in the company's phrasing, "inspired by the everyday life moments we all know and love." Frébourg has framed fragrance as something tied to mood rather than fixed personality, encapsulated in the brand's line: "be unfaithful, be unreasonable and wear what you want, where you want, when you want!" [5]
The company groups its outlook under four values — bold, transparent, authentic and reasonable — and takes a pointed stance on marketing. It rejects "100% natural" positioning as misleading, arguing for a balance of synthetic and natural ingredients and for consumer education over slogans. Its advertising features what it calls "versatile muses" rather than celebrities or conventional models. The brand summarises its own honesty claim plainly: "We're not perfect, but we're honest."
Products and innovation
Versatile's fragrances are built around 15ml roll-on bottles of alcohol-free, oil-based perfume extract, formulated with sweet almond and wheat oils, at concentrations reported between 30 and 38 percent — roughly twice that of a standard eau de parfum. The roll-on format is presented as a way to reduce waste compared with conventional 100ml alcohol sprays. The line also includes spray perfume extracts made with organic wheat alcohol, eaux de parfum, and a bodycare range of creams, oils and hand products.
Several scents are named for culinary ideas: Croissant Café evokes a French breakfast, Rital Date draws on Italian limoncello, pesto and pistachio, and Culot Thé combines jasmine tea, apricot and wasabi [5]. A later release, Sea, Sud & Sun, was formulated at 33 percent concentration around fig, orange blossom, a pastis accord, musk and nougat [7]. The company has said it paused candle production because of inflation-driven costs [7].
Ethics and sustainability
The company describes its formulas as vegan and clean, made in France, and free of animal-derived ingredients, endocrine disruptors, colorants, UV filters and CMR (carcinogenic, mutagenic or reprotoxic) substances. Editorial coverage similarly reports the products as cruelty-free and vegan, and free of BHT and BHA [6]. No named third-party certification body is cited on the company's pages.
Versatile says it manufactures exclusively through French and European partners, apart from samples, and favours what it calls minimalist, optimised packaging — "content > container." It also states that it donates 3 percent of profits to the RUBAN ROSE association for breast cancer research, reporting roughly 40,000 euros given over four years, a commitment it links to the founder's father, the cancer and genetics researcher Professor Thierry Frébourg.
Recognition and press
The brand has been profiled in editorial and retailer coverage, including interviews with Frébourg by Oh My Cream and the niche-perfume outlet Planar Parfums, and a profile by Andersen Beauty. It exhibited at the Esxence trade fair in Milan in May 2023 [7]. No formal industry awards are recorded in the available sources.
Current status
Versatile is active. Its most recent reported milestones, dated October 2025, cite distribution across 400 retailers in 30 countries, more than 65,000 perfumes sold, and one million euros in net revenue [2]. An earlier interview noted about 11,000 perfumes sold by roughly two and a half years in [7], indicating continued growth since launch.
